AP casters have downtime on their damage. They burst you, then do nothing for a couple seconds.

AD casters DON'T have downtime on their damage. They burst you, then have appreciable followup DPS from autoattacks.

That's the difference, and that's why an AD Zhonya's is not a thing that should happen in this game.

The approximate "equivalent" of Zhonya's Hourglass for AD champions is Mercurial Scimitar. It has a similar build path (BF Sword == Needlessly Large Rod, Resistance Item), it has similar stats (with AD and AP switched, and Armor and MR switched), and it has an active to protect the user (CC Removal instead of Stasis).
