This community makes no sense at all

Darth Sidiouss··178 votes·7,043 views

You know what happens when you complain about something? anything in particular? it gets downvoted then its soon to be forgotten into the ocean of other complaints.

Ive noticed after posting and viewing the gameplay boards for close to a year that around 3 months after all those down voted posts, that same notion or compliant is suddenly up-voted beyond belief and but the downvoted threads and the upvoted thread shared the same information and tackled the same problem which doesn't make sense at all.

Now all of sudden the community agrees finally that the infernal drake is a cancerous monstrosity and promotes damage creep in seemingly unhealthy ways, etc. SO what changed your minds? is it this hive mind shit where a specific person you like must post something that discusses that same thing plenty of other people already tried to address?

If that's the case whats the point of posting anything? perhaps the upvote /downvote needs to be readjusted in some way because the same people over and over get upvoted over and over and the CRAZY thing is if look up these people they dont even play ranked like that or if they showed concern for a champion they dont even play yet up-voted. But that's none of my business.

Current community logic: Lets down-vote someone who has potentially over 250 - 500k on a champion discussing the real problems of the champion.

NO NO lets up vote this guy cause i like him and he posts all the time and hes funny and... and ... yeah

Dr. Rubick? The guy gets downvoted sometimes, the shitlords from M&G are the on who gets upvoted randomly.

Yeah, I see Rubick downvoted all the time. I also see a lot of upvotes. It goes both ways for him. I disagree with a lot of his posts, but some of them are spot on.

I'm not sure - not just because I agree with a lot, not all, but a lot of what he says, but because he's critical of Riot's new direction which alienates and pushes away veteran players who want to see League return to a healthy state rather than bending over and letting Riot push their divine mandate of creating an environment of flashy, obnoxious bullshit that spectators and new players who didn't experience League in it's prime and don't know any better seem to love.

Here's my point of view on community interactions with Riot: I'm often seen as overly critical of Riot, but that's because I feel not enough people are speaking out against their lies, their favoritism, their hypocrisy, their out of control overly sensitive egos, their asinine additions to the game, their insanity with their change for the sake of change mentality that they're pretty much forced to admit now, and their ludicrous vision for League being a "global sport that lasts generations on the level of baseball and basketball" forsaking the general playerbase that built them up from nothing. Greed and arrogance have corrupted them and as a result, have ruined this game. It's only now after years of this garbage that they're finally starting to see the damage they've caused. Starting...they haven't fully grasped all that they've done yet.

If I were a Rioter, particularly one who deals with gameplay, I would much rather hear and read about criticisms than praise. It should be no secret by now that I hate white knights with a passion, and if I had the power, though it would be very unethical and unreasonable, I would want to see them banned from media outlets for constantly spouting useless information for me to parse though. Anything at all that I would decide, they would hold it up to the world as God's gift to Man. I could make a champion with thirteen passives, five forms of mobility, and an ult that instantly kills anything it touches, and I would be showered with adoration because of how "cool, fun, and unique" that design is. Fuck that. That's a broken mistake of a champion and anyone with half a brain could see that.

I'd want to see what people like about my creation sure, but I really want to see what people don't like about it. Is it too obnoxious? Is it too strong? Does it fit into too many team comps? What is it abusing? Is it weak enough for it to be a reportable offense for picking it? Is it just a bad design? Tell me what I did wrong so I can fix it, and use what I learned to make a better champion next time! Don't shower everything Riot does with adoration and cry away the "salty haters" with your fanboy tears! I want criticism - not mindless drones loving me just because my name is red!

TheSingularity2 votes

Please, make a post and copy and paste this statement. It is legit everything wrong with riot and is so well structured and worded.

Tis perfect. Hell you could expand on it and add in evidence for each point in the past and completely obliterate anything riot could say to defend against this statement

ForeverLaxx10 votes

Riot doesn't respond to real criticism. The only people you'd be arguing with are the players who were never around to experience the game before it's current form.

The developers have changed over the years and I'm pretty sure no one (or almost no one) from the original team is around anymore. So even if you do get a dev to respond to the points, you're still arguing with someone who was never around to experience the original game and only knows what it looks like in the last 6 months.

It's a losing battle, particularly when you factor in the Chinese Overlords.

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

What if someone happens to disagree with you, and think Riot is doing a good job, without being a white knight? Mainly because if/when they do something they dislike, they can criticize without attacking them?

Keevalroy5 votes

If they think the current game is something spectacular, the first thing I would do is check their profile and gauge when they started playing. Think about this, there's a ton of people who started in Season 5, where the game, in my eyes, took a massive nosedive toward the end and has not recovered since. If that's the only League they know, naturally, they'd think it's fine now.

Secondly, I'd look up their profile out of curiosity to see how often and what they defend. If they're capable of noticing something incredibly stupid like...I don't know, let's say Riot closes ranked down for the rest of the season because ranked is toxic, they're probably just optimistic, but this is a line they crossed. The minute they defend them, is when they should be attacked. That's an extreme case, but there are people deluded enough to say "it's Riot's will, and it's their game. If you don't like it, make your own game" whenever any criticism whatsoever arises against the benevolent rulers.

Thirdly, it's possible they do think on their own, have a point, and it's just something I disagree with, some things more than others. The thing is, this is as close to politics as we're going to get in the sense that everyone has a philosophy on how things should run, those people mostly agree with like-minded players, they think they should be the ones in charge so they can fix the problems they're seeing, they tend to despise the other "parties," there are players with moderate or extreme views, but we're all in one country game. Politics are messy and there's nasty debates that pop up from time to time. It's interesting and scary to think about.

Ahristocats11 votes

in the past days i complained about lethality a lot, i feel like it's pointless anymore because we all know it will be fixed (fingers crossed) but something i don't accept is edge of the night, at least remove the MR from it The last thread i did was because i saw Faker having 160 mr on an assassin without any drawbacks (he had a lot of AD, and armor?140) i'm not even a mage player, but it's just unfair that a mage has to fight someone with 63% magic damage reduction that can kill him in a matter of a second, zed can build EON second item, can a mage build zhonya second item? he needs luden to roam as good as assassins who have out of combat ms, he needs void staff because of mr, now he needs zhonya that doesn't even help a lot

people told me that i'm hypocritical because i didn't leave the game WHEN I NEVER SAID I WAS GOING TO LEAVE they just read the title of my thread and went like "oh he's leaving" didn't read anything in the thread, i was planing to stop soloq (and did it) and i said i will try as hard as i can to continue to have fun (title was i can't play league anymore playing=having fun)

Now on "demagogue" you have to explain to me how exactly you see this because in every thread i do i try to provide as much logic as i can watch my reply to the dude complaining about yasuo being op if you think i'm a "demagogue" if i'm one, why didn't i just tell him that yasuo is op to satisfy him?"

blueberrypancake2 votes

I know you do apply logic, very well in fact (although I do believe sometimes there are consequences you may need to account for such as the suggested decreasing of damage around the board which has mixed feelings among higher up players and as such there is a more conservative side of LS and a more liberal side of you and arguably scarra who want it as a way to reduce snowballing, but I personally as a low-mid ladder player have no right myself to question your argument, only the philosophy)

What I'm just saying is that if you wanted to, you could say anything, and get people on your sides for personal interest (and I don't necessarily mean general philosophy I mean targeting specific things for gain for your own playstyle)

Personally your posts interest me, even if I don't agree with it. You shouldn't worry about what you are doing

I'm not calling you one, you just have potential to be one, and a good one at that (weird compliment, plz no offense intended)

This is a general phenomenon in the LoL community. Essentially, Riot Games has brought about a state of affairs in which resources are spent on molding their product to suit the needs of a few people.

Periodically, they decide [for reasons] that between optimizing the experience for most of the playerbase, and optimizing the experience for their "LoL-famous" players and those players' followings (read: e-sports), the latter is the better choice. This is shortsighted, and it will only take one unfortunate event to make it a problem.

The fact that they're not changing course suggests to me that they may have already settled on a future expiration date for LoL.

#Here's how to get upvotes:

1. Blame Riot for something. The stronger the language, the better the shitpost quality 2. Don't actually discuss things or post any suggestions or improvements

Number 1 is crucial to your success.

Teridax686 votes

Number 2 is actually pretty important, because giving any substance to your post means you're giving people something to disagree with, and thereby downvote. From what I've noticed, one of the reasons why pure complaint posts become successful, whereas suggestion posts often lose traction or get downvoted, is because complaint posts cash in on a feeling, whereas suggestion posts require comprehension to understand the solution, and may not agree with certain posters with opinions and separate agendas of their own. Basically, shitposts on Gameplay tend to be more popular by their very nature, simply because they offer nothing to disagree with.

I also mostly agree with OP, I think the general atmosphere on Gameplay is so unconducive to productive discussion that the effects it produces are sometimes almost comically absurd. I really feel the voting feature is largely to blame here, and I'd wager that removing both upvotes and downvotes would lead to much less hive mind-like behavior. Thread popularity on Gameplay should be based on quality of discussion, not a system that continues to be heavily abused on here, and has been proven to be easily gamed on pretty much any site that includes it.

malicious metal will always get Reddit gold

it's just a rule of boards

Earthlord Jazz8 votes

Hi, I'm a frequent boards lurker. I don't have too much to contribute to this conversation because I mainly agree with you. That being said, while the 'hive mind' mentality that you mention certainly does exist in specific examples (Jhin turning from the most balanced champ to the most egregious offender of lethality in the span of 2 months), your example of Infernal Drake randomly popping up is a poor one.

There's been no doubt in any mind (professional, shoutcaster, or boards member) that ever since the mid-year mage update with the elemental drakes, infernal drake has always been superior in ANY given situation. There have been many posts (and more importantly, comments) from the community that have wanted to broadcast this issue.

I think your suggestion of modifying the up/down voting system is a good way of combating this 'hive mind' mentality, but I wouldn't have any specific suggestions and would love to hear a Riot post about this

Xela Syab8 votes

You gotta wait till malicious metal makes a post about it.... cause reasons...?

Ravore5 votes

You're speaking in the wrong place. I think the only real way to voice your real opinion is in rioter threads and having a rioter respond to it because this community all bandwagons one thing and then immediately regrets the outcome.

Community- Assassins are trash all updates failed except leblancs, Adc's have no power spike Riot- Alright, What would you like me to do? Community- Buff adcs early game and buff lethality because it's so much weaker than armor pen Riot-does it Community-fucking riot buffing lethality now everythings broken and we have these adcs getting power spikes so early and assassins are broken Riot- but you asked for it?

This has happened so many times in so many ways.....

Sherogarth4 votes

Quick and dirty solution - make few additional accounts and after posting something "lick your own balls" (upvote yourself few times). It should move your thread into "hot" tab so more ppl will see it. If its already "upvoted idea" they are more likely to upvote it even more or at last argue with it. Either way this little push should be enough to keep your thread active and "hot" for some time.

Before you downvote me into oblivion - I dont approve this, its dirty and cheap way. It only shows how flawed current voting system is.

Gregor Gysi4 votes

One month ago I posted about lethality being OP (it was shortly after the changes hit live) - result: -3 Karma.

There were some hilarious quotes ("I disagree. The lethality buffs are barely noticeable." "Lethality, if I recall correctly, is HALF as effective as armor pen" "lethality itself isn't a problem") and they were upvoted.

And now everything is flooded with complaints about lethality. The boards really take long to realize that something is wrong.

Serika Zero4 votes

Same reason why when I posted that Camille is overloaded, design faliure and unbalanced -> donwvoted with her release date. Later, people start complaining about Camille -> tons of upvotes.

so:

  1. hype, if something is new and there's no trend of already hating it, or already liking it. People will generally like it and downvote criticism, even if totally true, on that subject
  2. white knighting, peoples desperate trying to defend rito for whatever reason. And the non-white knights didn't experience the issue enough yet to be bothered by it
  3. experience, the more you are exposed to something "wrong", the more you understand how wrong it is. Even if you totally disagreed with someone that told you its wrong beforehand.
  4. hype, its its a popular idea to hate on: REWORKS ARE BAD (use to at least) -> mass downvotes. Now it became popular to hate on, so "FAIL REWORKS" -> upvotes

It's not just this community, it's the world, or at least the US in general. People don't care about facts, truth or logic. They just want to be entertained by someone. It's not who is better, it's who has more social media followers, etc.

OyddAWqJ5r2 votes

It's simple actually. By using friends or smurfs to upvote it nearly instantaneously upon release all the eyes that see it come up on the recent list will hive mind upvote it.

The problem is smart people review it and either upvote or downvote but generally cancel each other out. Meanwhile stupid people don't read context and just upvote upvotes and downvote downvotes. So by appealing to the script encoded in the heads of the less mentally proficient you can boost any topic to the top of the boards.

woodvsmurph2 votes

It's the idea that if you "attack" anyone's main champ(s), they tend to get upset or if you disagree with them no matter how respectfully and logically. They get offended and then they and all their friends downvote you just because the one guy got upset. It is all emotional with many people and logic has no place sadly.

Ex: I tried explaining to someone just how ahri is more difficult to play and 1-shot/combo anyone without a lead than many other top tier mids like syndra. Had a guy argue with me to no end and call me all sorts of kindergarten stuff just because he disagreed. I asked for even one high rank vid/clip of an ahri who wasn't given a massive lead by ganks and ward control manage to 1-combo/shot the enemy mid from full hp. You can find plenty of syndra vids out there, but you can't say the same for ahri. Well he gets upvotes and I get negative votes even though I use logic, am not rude about my argument (while he is). That's what happens when the other guy/girl has more friends who want to waste time upvote/downvote.

Why do we never see Challenger players on Boards talking about Balance? :/

TotalJerk11 votes

Because the boards are garbage. If a Challenger player has a problem with the game, they go to Reddit, Twitter, or make a video on YouTube.

ForeverLaxx6 votes

This is because the devs don't use their own boards for anything important. That's not a problem with the boards, it's a problem with the developers.

TotalJerk2 votes

Can you blame them? There is rarely any constructive discussion here, it's usually just a salt dump.

ForeverLaxx6 votes

There could have been more constructive discussion like when the game was newer, before the latest Dev team decided that a Positive Feedback Echo Chamber (Reddit) was more worth their time to endorse. They even went so far as to destroy the old boards, institute this copy of Reddit's format, then sit back and only pay attention to the various Meme threads that get voted to the top.

When the people who use the official forums know the Devs don't care about their input, you're going to cultivate a community of bitter players.
