Cassiopeia - a history of ongoing neglection?

Canastus··70 votes·8,089 views

Yes, it's THAT time of the day again. Well, it actually only has been 2 days since the last thread, but you get the point.

The lack of red responses regarding the state of Cass aswell their seeming lack of interest for other related discussions only leave me with one perturbing conclusion: Riot doesn't like the snakelady. I know, those are some strong words, but please consider the following questions.

1. When was the last time you saw Cass in a cinematic, a piece of merchandise or in the game itself (e.g. summoner icon)? The answer is: close to never before (the Dominion trailer was an unfinished and leaked project). She was released in 2010 and still hasn't managed to attract any notable attention from the company itself since then. How could that be you may ask? Is it the fact that she's some kind of abomination?

Or is this a matter strictly related to her gameplay? Could it be that she always was considered an outsider, especially in a metagame which favored more and more mobility as the years went on?

2. When was the last time she received a skin? Around two and a half years ago. She may have no legs but there's by no means a lack of potential when it comes to skin ideas. I recommend visiting the Skin Concept board, they have some pretty awesome stuff there. It's just too bad Riot hasn't picked up on any of those concepts so far. How could you explain this lack of interest?

Speaking of skins, the pricing on her Mythic skin isn't up to date from what we've come to expect from a 975 RP product in terms of quality. The skin neither has custom particles nor a recall animation, it's a 750 RP skin at best. I strongly implore you to reconsider your pricing in that matter, at least do it for all the other players who haven't had a reason to get the skin so far.

3. How did the later rework affect the champion itself? No no, I won't talk about her gameplay (I did that far too often already) but I want to highlight the other part of that update - her visuals and lore. To be precise, it wasn't even a VU, what she received was a TU (texture update) which was accompanied with some questionable changes to some of her skins (most of all her Desperada one) and the way her classic skin was represented (key differences between splashart and ingame model).

Then there's the matter of her personality which is a big change from what she was before. The seductive temptress who was so well portrayed on her old splashart along with her charming voice acting were changed into those of a vicious viper (gameplay and splashart wise) talking about betrayal and leaving behind her humanity which was never the case for her old self (she was deeply disturbed by what she had become).

Lorewise she has lost a lot of her complex and tragic nature, just looking at her champion profile presents you with 3 lines of text defining her as the being which I described before. Her little story from the summoner insight isn't probably even canon anymore, so what does this leave us? A massive downgrade in every regard.

4. How were veteran Cassiopeia players treated since the rework? After almost an entire season of having to deal with this now reworked champion and closely following the discussion, I can only conclude that her playerbase was mostly left out of the loop when it came to wishes & suggestions and what would be best for the champion in general. Remember the hundreds of pages in Stashu's thread when the rework came out ? Not a single response.

The lack of interaction between reds and Cassiopeia's playerbase has been one of the most appalling cases of neglection I've seen so far accompanied by an equally impressive outcry. Every single other rework in the history of this game had MORE communication going on than this one, hands down. And sadly this seems to be an ongoing trend considering the more recent complaints from many other Cassio players who are simply dissatisfied with the way their champion is represented in the story driven universe aswell within the metagame of League of Legends.

I simply can't shake the feeling that "they" aren't taking us seriously. It's extremely frustrating to be the main of a champion who happens to be quite unpopular just to be left waiting for god knows how long without any certainty of things to come.

Which hurts the most however is being unable to pick my favorite champion without getting constantly punished for it just because the majority of the roster happens to be a natural counterpick or because my champion was nerfed into the ground just to stay forgotten and unloved while her natural enemies constantly receive new skins and buffs.

Feel free to show your support for those champions, too.

No one's stopping you from making a similiar thread, forsaken soul.

Poppy's getting a total rework, sadly riot is taking her the wrong direction and won't listen to reason.

HolowHall of Hal2 votes

We still haven't seen anything about the Poppy rework how can you be so sure about that?

Crett1 votes

they talked about removing her ult and making her a full tank

Jarrito2322 votes

People are complaining about that? People hate it when Fizz has 2 seconds of invulnerability, but Poppy can have 8?

Linna Excel2 votes

Fizz's skill isn't an ult, has a much lower CD, and has a mobility and damage component to it.

Jarrito2321 votes

Poppy's ult does have a damage component. She can actually attack while invincible, and do you honestly think it is ok for a champ with a high damage kit to be able to immune to damage and CC for that long?

Oerba No Naja1 votes

what about Tryndamere ?

Jarrito2321 votes

Tryndamere can be CC'd during his ult, and his health can be taken down, just not past 1.

DrMundo Town sounds like it should be the name of the most hilariously accidental PBS show ever.

Just imagine DrMundo running around with a bunch of kids in a fake set that's all unicorns and rainbows teaching them about reading n stuff.

11/10 would stream on Netflix.

Demonsolder212 votes

inb4 they make her a support and force her into bot lane. lol. Kinda amusing really.

CasterGilgamesh2 votes

I think my biggest gripe about Cassiopeia is that they took away what we loved most about her: the deadly temptress that would wittle and destroy her enemies from the inside out. Then they force the rework down our throats, telling us it would help alleviate her toxic laning phase ( no pun intended... ), which only made her lane bullying much worse so they nerfed her consecutively until she was left in an undesirable, unsatisfying spot more than the first week of her rework.

Riot's so full of shit, they don't care about player feedback or their playerbase anymore. All they care about is renovating the game and trying to make it as fresh as possible. It's why they keep making drastic, extreme changes to their champions, items and gameplay. They want to keep it fresh and different so they can attract as many audiences as possible. They'll never admit it, because it'd look bad if they did, but they're greedy and self-absorbed with their success.

The game may be thriving now, but even professional players have made negative comments about League lately. It's slowly, very slowly, going downhill because of Riot's refusal to communicate with the people that give their game life. They're so sucked into LCS and worlds, their excuse for being unable to communicate last year, and are just repeating their offenses time and time again. Riot's passionate team are gone: Shurelia, Nikasaur, Randuin, Morello & Phreak ( who are a rare face now ).

All we ever see now are KateChaos, Repertoir, Scruffy and Meddler communicating with us but not very often. The last IronStylus was seen, he was arrogant and brushing players off. Ghostcrawler will appear, shoves things in our face and act like he's right while pretending he cares what we have to say. Stashu and CertainlyT are probably the worst offenders. They legitimately acted like our input was important, when it really wasn't. They gave us these reworks and disregarded and ignored everyone's feedback, and shipped out Cassiopeia and Mordekaiser in extremely unhealthy states. I could go on, but you guys already know and they already know.

Rework her again, but this time go "Full Sion" on her kit.

There is an neat way the poison mage theme can work - give her three different poions, all applied through her baisc abilities over different ways (AoE cloud that moves/Skillshot/small spreading Aoe, whatever you can do with that) and they all STACK on the enemy. The more different poisons you have on them the more they stack. Now, for the poisons:

Passive: Poison Affinity: Poisons stack faster when there are multiple ones on the target. Basic attacks do not apply poison, but slow the decresase of poison stacks.

1.) Petrification posion: the more stacks are on the enemy the more it slows until it turns into a stun at maximum stacks. 2.) Neurotoxin: Deals damage and decreases the vision the target has, at a certain number of stacks the minimap is deactivated. At Maximal stacks the victim is completly blind (worse than noc ult) 3.) Shred-Poison: deals minimal damage and wears down the resitances of the target.

Now, none of them really do damage yet, but fear not, we still have the ultimate:

4.) Noxian Gratitude

Ya remember what Cassie did to Sivir in Shurima? A good old Noxian Stab-in-the-back.

The idea is: you get your three poisons on your target until the max, so they can't move, fight or even see you and then after a short channel (raising ceremonial dagger) you stab them for tons of damage that removes all poison effects, but deals damage the more poison there was on the enemy.

Sure, like this she no longer will be a fang-gatling-gun, but that's not what she's supposed to be in the first place. Like this she would build as some kind of mage/assassin, but one that ahs to do a lot of work before getting that sweet sweet damage. You try to stay in the distance, spreading your poison and waiting for enemy mistakes - and then you go in and murder that helpless fool that DARED to oppose you. Good old Noxus Style.

What do you think of that idea?

Canastus3 votes

Sounds extremely cool but I'm not sure how that would play out in a teamfight scenario where multiple enemies would jump onto you if you ever tried getting close to someone. If she were an assassin, she'd need some mobility aswell.

Neglection isn't a word. Negligence is the word you are looking for.

Canastus2 votes

I'm not a native speaker but my dictionary would disagree with the first part of your statement. ;P

Thryale3 votes

yer both right. the way you used it is correct, but he's refering to how they haphazardly "addressed" her issues and ignored a large portion of the player base with regards to her overall thematic. (riot stashu actually listed brand and mord as "dot mages" and said she would be stepping on their toes in that niche) so yes, riot has been negligent with cass.

...and I just happened to re-read both yer posts and now feel very stupid... sigh, moving along.

The answer is: never before. She was released in 2010 and still hasn't managed to attract any notable attention from the company itself. How could that be you may ask? _Is it the fact that she's some kind of abomination? _

She's certainly no Miia.

I think from a marketing standpoint, the hooded cobra look she's got is holding her back. Some people like it and it kind of fits with her, but on the other hand that's not what people want out of a lamia or a medusa style champ. For a Lamia, she'd need to be a cute snake girl; in this case they should have kept her as beautiful as she was once described as in the lore. For a medusa, she's need live snakes on her head. So she fails on both counts.

It's not a terrible idea or execution, but I think her head doesn't live up to people's expectations in either way. Now consider she never had a huge fan base either.

  1. When was the last time she received a skin?

I'd love to see a mermaid cass that's more fish-like than siren cass and she could have a clam shell bra too.

Then there's the matter of her personality which is a big change from what she was before. The seductive temptress who was so well portrayed on her old splashart along with her charming voice acting were changed into those of a vicious viper

I agree riot made a mistake here.

I simply can't shake the feeling that "they" aren't taking us seriously.

Okay, let's grant you the fact the rework fail. This is pretty easy to do. Riot probably had other things planned after her rework and now probably don't have the resources to fix her ATM. IMO she needs a major rework in both her visuals and in her gameplay. Give her a new head (either beautiful or live snakes) pick if she's going to be a medusa or poison mage, and update her game play accordingly. If they want her to be a medusa, she needs a bow, her E needs to be a poisoned arrow spell/effect, and a snake head. If they want lamia, she needs a nice head, no new weapon, and probably a new ult.

I vote Lamia and then make a medusa with Cass's current ult later.

To be fair, wasn't Cassiopeia shown in the Dominion trailer?

Yes, that is only one "cinematic", but that is one cinematic more than many of the other champions have received.

Baseball3b3 votes

If I could upvote your threads more, I would do it 100000 times over.

What really gets me isn't the awful rework, art/visuals and general neglect. It's the lack of communication between Riot and Cass's playerbase.

A bad rework, visuals, etc can be revised and redone, but only with communication. Without any interaction though, nothing happens and quite honestly it just feels like she's been left to rot.

Very frustrating.

Dalthine3 votes

+1 just for the mention of the lore. I can kind of see the motivation in Noxian ideals that she loves the new form but it was so much more interesting when she had an entirely different form of strength that was taken away from her in the transformation. You had the distinct feel that no matter how much stronger she was for it, she was still trying to come to terms with her new body and even had some characteristics that seemed to show regret for her actions.

It just made her an overall more interesting character. Instead we just get another monster.

I was around for all the rework discussions, too, though I didn't consider myself a main of her enough to comment. No matter how much the players pushed to take emphasis off of Twin Fang, it just got pushed more and more. It was extremely disheartening to see it happen.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

As long as they don't make her terrible to play against. Like I can't see anything worse than they rework her to be a DoT champion and you can't do anything as you watch your HP tick away.

That effect of watching yourself tick to 0 should scream Cassiopeia.

You got me right in the feels man. The way you worded it is just perfect. I miss her old personality.. so much. There were things more profound to it which I feel the reworkers missed.

I think it'd be nice if Riot made a thread or something for discussions about their views on their champions. It could even just bee a weekly discussion where people can get some info. Just generally a little bit more transparency would be nice. It frustrating when they mention (or don't) that they are looking at a champion and you don't hear anything for years.

I Don't play Cassiopeia but it feels to me like she as you said "needs more love", i find her to be a pretty unique champ in terms of design and her kit (Which could definitely use some more work), it just saddens me when the only time you see her is in a Bot game, trolling us players and being generally annoying......

Like I said to the other guys, that trailer was an unfinished project which wasn't officially released. The overall low quality of the animation should make it quite obvious.

There's also the issue of her apperance in that movie which doesn't even resemble her pre-rework self (take a good look at her headgear).

Actually, I agree the Cass rework is worse than the Karma rework. Only because Karma never got a rework . . .
