To avoid having your focus drawn away from the game and to people who are irritating you - or, in the case of muting people at the start of the game - preventing yourself from losing focus for whatever your teammates or enemies might say. It's easy to get tilted and have all your focus drawn towards whoever's tilting you and just screw yourself over pretty hard.

Chat 90% of the time provides nothing useful ever. Pings are more than enough. I usually don't mute all when I start the game. If someone decides they are going to post a meme or something in chat - often then not they will provide nothing useful in conversation ever.

When you're at my shitty elo, muting can actually increase your chances of winning a game.

I just started using it about a month ago and it makes a huge difference, especially when you have that one super salty player that decided to single you out and rag on you all game (even though s/he is the one feeding). It's so peaceful....I can focus on my play.

So you don't have to watch as both you and the enemy team call you numerous racial slurs and how they had a nice evening banging your mother

Just so I can read my team's chat without the hindrance from that one single player spamming gibberish for the purpose of annoyance and making chat unusable.
