@Riot: Are there any plans for changing the flawed ranking system for season 6?
So, there is no doubt that everyone (if not nearly everyone) on this forum knows that the ranking system is flawed. Like, really flawed. Honestly, with league going into its sixth season, I don't know how it hasn't been worked into something more fair for a team-based game.
I mean, I know that mmr isn't a carbon copy of the elo system used in other games like chess (which is a system designed specifically for 1v1 situations) but it's clearly not working correctly. Not to mention that promos are a joke. Best 2 out of 3 to get anywhere in bronze, or into silver? All you need to fail your promos is one bad team and one plat smurf that just decided that they wanted to pub stomp you to remind you of your place in the universe, and it looks like you have another night of playing ranked games to re-qualify for your promos. Since you'll probably be tilting at this point, you're going to have to wait at least a day before you try again or risk getting knocked down severely in lp.
You might ask why I'm making this thread and why you should listen to a bronze 5 nobody, and that is because I am part of this community. In fact, being bronze, I have a pretty valuable perspective, being in a large chunk of the main audience of league of legends. So much of the community is bronze and silver (read by players in gold or higher as "really f***ing bad players") so I am part of the majority of your audience. And the majority of the lower level audience does have a problem with this system. There are players that are punished hard for other people's mistakes because this is a team based game. There are some players that are so bad, so abysmal at league of legends, that they can single-handedly lose a game, even playing the safest or "most op" champions out there. This system ignores any of these outliers and just assumes that you are the only variable in the outcome of your promos. From what I hear, to climb fast in bronze, you have to play like you're in low gold. How does that make any sense? Play like a gold player to enter silver with any level of consistence? What kind of backward a system does that? Is that how a ranking system should be? Should the climb to where you belong be this arduous if you really belong there?
I have been in my bronze 4 promos 6 times. SIX TIMES, without advancing once. If it weren't for trolling, smurfing, or players that are absolutely terrible at this game and can lose a game single-handedly, I would have at least gotten to bronze 4. Almost every time, I have made it to the third game, and get trolled or pub stomped by someone who's clearly not bronze. How can I tell they're not? The same way you can point out a bronze player in a game full of pre-30's. They don't behave the same, they wreck face, and they single-handedly win the game, if not close to single-handedly. Admittedly, this came from me losing a game because my team members could not be persuaded to do stupid things like chase people half way across the map, contest baron alone, etc, etc. You know, "bronze things."
I am sick and tired of getting dicked over by sheer bad luck every promos. Hell, I'm tired of people saying you can't get anywhere fast, even if you are good. That's a problem if you have to hope you win only 51% of your games just so you can slowly crawl your way up in ranking, no matter how good you are. That is, unless you're a smurf that doesn't belong that low, in which case you'll just stomp because you know what mistakes newer players make, and you'll know how to exploit them.
A lot of people dismiss people like me and say you should just practice. I know it's a good argument, but my problem is with how accurate the assessment of your skill is, not with how good I am. Quite frankly, I don't know how anyone in bronze knows how good they are because this game gives no clear feedback to know what you're doing wrong, and half the time this feedback isn't even always for you. Did you do something wrong or was this loss meant to teach the idiot full AD Garen that he doesn't know how to play this game right? How much of this loss was your fault? Should you change anything? I know this is pretty inherent with the current format for the MOBA genre. However, that doesn't mean that you can't find some way to make it more even, more fair for players that are better than their elo. I get so frustrated when my whole team does one thing collectively that allows a comeback. During the same game, I follow my own advice, and still lose even though I was clearly making the right choice.
You may say I'm biased, but I swear to god some teams are hell-bent on losing, whether it's picking a team comp that only builds damage, to just straight up stupid shit you should have learned long before you started playing ranked, like how to ward, not to chase for long distances, and basics of how to contest objectives. JUST THE BASICS. I don't expect only pros to go to ranked, but some of the people around my mmr (predicted by op.gg to be around the mid 400's) are just beyond help or beyond just being bad players.
While I am just a small fry who's not amazing, I'm not the kind to complain with no solution in sight. I have several ideas that could at least alleviate at least a small portion of the anguish that comes with the current system in place.
Well, for one, you could make some elo's easier to get into. I mean, good god. So much of the community is bronze, let alone bronze and silver, that it's a miracle if you get to gold. I mean, expanding the rankings sightly could help a bit, or at least cut down to the complaints a bit.
Also, you could rework the promos system to target individuals? Or perhaps you could build a team of people from bronze 5 in their promos and put them against a team with a few bronze 4's or make them all bronze 4? It's just an idea, so at least the whole team has a vested interest in doing their best and reduces the chances of someone coming in to troll. Or maybe you could have an option to enter a promo game when you qualify, which replaces your ability to queue for a normal ranked game? It could help to separate the queues. Maybe finding an easy way to determine what a player is doing wrong, and detecting it could help with a more individualized assessment. This kind of bleeds into the flawed death recap system and champion ranking system (seriously, you could go legendary but lose the game because you don't know how to take objectives, and still get an S rank, despite not knowing how to actually play a key part of this game).
With this, theoretically, you would be with a team that operates at least at a skill level that may be at least marginally better than the current elo you're at, and thus you can assume more consistent results from this test of skill instead of saying best out of three and calling it a day.
Honestly, I like this game, but ranked is so stressful, and I know I'm going to keep playing ranked as long as I play League. Why? Am I stupid? No, I'm competitive. And there's nothing wrong with that. Hell, I'll bet 90% of the community is competitive, and not playing for just a "fun, relaxing experience." If they are, then they're probably playing ARAMS or Dominion, so this conversation is irrelevant to those people anyway. No one plays ranked if they just play only for the joy of playing league. If they do, they're doing it wrong.
Feel free to leave a comment, Rioter or not. I want to know where the community stands on this as well. It's one thing to see a lot of complaint posts, but that doesn't mean the complaints are valid. I mean, Heimerdinger and Riven aren't actually in need of nerfs, but that doesn't stop half the community from complaining about them. What do you guys think? Am I right and the system needs work, or am I wrong and just don't know what I'm talking about?
