Maybe it's because I play top and jungle equally....

But it's really not hard to avoid being ganked top. I have a bit more sympathy for mid because of its location and number of ways in, but even then the lane is a lot shorter

First,

how are you still getting caught by the level 3 gank? How do you "get ganked at 3 minutes every game" and not learn to plop your ward down at 2:45? Why don't you just let them push the wave or keep it in the middle? The people who keep getting caught by this are the ones that play stupidly aggressive 24/7 and complain about 'MUH 1V1' in a 5v5 team game. League is not a 1v1 game. Your 1v1 never existed.

Second,

learn to manage a wave. It's so easy to set up a freeze when people brainlessly push. And if you are pushing, don't be dumb about it. You can see exactly where your minion wave is on your minimap. The enemy minion wave is in the exact same spot on their side. Don't spam all your abilities to clear a wave in the middle of the lane when you know their next wave is about to reach their tower because guess what? Your wave is going to meet that next wave right in front of their tower and leave you overextended to clear it. Instead, wait for their next wave to meet yours in the middle, then clear it fast so it resets under their tower. Now you are free to back for free without having to blow TP. Or just maybe go do something productive. Unless you die, when you get back to lane you'll have the wave hard shoving to you and miss only like 2 CS.

Third,

Stop wasting your time. I see this shit all the time. The enemy Riven pushes me under tower then just stands there watching me farm under tower hoping to maybe get an auto W in. Go do something productive. How do you expect to not get ganked when you stand there overextended all the time? Shove the wave under tower then roam mid or kill scuttle or grab the honey fruit or pop the enemy blast cone or get a deep ward down. Listen, some champs are great at harassing under tower. At the same time, fuck being harassed under my own damn tower for free. There should be a great risk for doing it.

Fourth,

stop wasting your damn wards. This is yet another thing that happens ALL THE TIME. Why are you dropping your pink while getting pushed in knowing damn well that your laner will be able to clear it for free in 15 seconds? Another scenario: my jungler is literally in the process of ganking bot lane. My lane opponent then drops a trinket ward into the river bush. Why??? My whole team is clearly visible on the map. Why are you straight up wasting your ward? Maybe pay attention to your map? Which brings me to the next point

Fifth

Use some damn map awareness. "Mid didn't ping MIA!" ...... Seriously? Maybe take a fraction of a second to look at your map every ten or fifteen seconds? The further you are extended in your lane, the more frequently you should be scanning your map. If just saw the enemy jungler being spotted somewhere, you know he can't be in your lane immediately. The only exception I make for this is you really should tell your team when your lane opponent hits 6 if they have a semi or global ult (Shen, TF, Karthus, Galio, etc)

Sixth,

Apply your game knowledge. League is NOT a game of perfect play. League is a game of CALCULATED risks. Seriously people. You can somewhat track junglers without even seeing them. Pay attention to what direction they left mid. Use some common sense.

Think:

  • "well they just showed bot so it would take them at least a minute to get up here, but the likelihood of them running here without clearing a camp or two is practically zero so I have a bit longer".

  • "their buff is respawning bot side so there is a lower chance of them being up here".

  • "well I can win this trade or kill them if nobody else shows up.... what are the chances of someone else being here?"

  • "this guy has being playing super scared, but is suddenly running at me. Someone else is here"

  • "Where is my jungler and does he have enough HP to help with a countergank? Will I even love long enough to get the countergank?"

Just a few examples of many. Use your brains people. Top lane is not a bubble

Conclusion:

You have to stop playing like top lane is or ever was supposed to be "the 1v1 island". Spoiler: it's not. There is no way to never get ganked, but you can minimize it severely. Like I said, league is a game of calculated risk. There is still risk involved. Think of Poker players. There is no way they know everyone's cards, but they use tells and knowledge to analyze the risk. Sometimes they have a 90% chance to win a hand but still lose. Though the game is technically random, the best players still win more than your average guy. Listen, I'm not the best player obviously. Sometimes I just say fuck it and roll the dice or just straight up miss something. Sometimes the best players do too. The difference is that I understand I'm rolling the dice and don't get butthurt about it. If you want to play stupidly aggressive 24/7, by all means go right ahead. Sometimes you won't get punished for it. Don't get pissy when you get called on your bluff though.

dam after reading your post, it becomes clear, your only looking at it from certain angles.

  1. top lane 3 min gank is at 2:40 right now. I need to becareful for the entire duration of the first jungle clear, not just at this time. I dont know if the jungle is going the double buff gank strat or the full clear strat. Also wards are very limited in what they can do. A predator jungler will run too fast for my 1 ward to matter, and thats if he even walks over it. There is always the lane gank option too. Or the over the wall junglers like kayn and zac.

Something else to consider is you dont have full control of the wave. If they enemy fast pushes the first wave to turret like rumble or doesnt even bother to cs the first wave, then im gonna be in a shitty position at 2:40. Also some match ups **REQUIRE ** me to play aggresive and play for the 1v1. Match ups like bruiser into tanks or bruiser into split push carries. Or snowball/ harass laners. The match up forces me to gain a lead or be alot less useful then the enemy. What the hell are u even proposing when there are champions like fiora, nasus, gp and cho in the top lane that require constant aggression to shut down. Basically the only real solutions are: play those champs that require being shut down early to bait for your jungler. Play a tank top and hope your team is strong enough to kill them while u peel. Play an agresive top laner while also duo'd with a good counter ganking jungler.

2: This used to be good advice but now its so easy to tower dive, that letting the enemy wave hit your tower or get close to your tower can mean your death. I have gotten so many kills because the enemy let me push and i dove them. I have gotten so many kills because the enemy tried to set up a freeze and my jungler used this to get in position to lane gank. Nothing you do top lane is safe. Most of what happens top lane is decided by the jungler. These good and useful tools are only actually usefula small fraction of the time in top lane. They are way more useful mid and bot lane.

3: ok this is probobly true more then i know. However i know that when i do it, im looking to get u down about 10% more hp then dive you with no chance of u living. But overall ya this is a solid point.

4: I use this time to ward because of the fact i know where the jungler is. You ever ward and the jungler is sitting there waiting? Ya this is to avoid that. Plus quite often the jungler ganks bot then recalls, clears something topside and comes to gank top. So now im prepared for it. As for pink wards, there are alot of better places to put one then right next to your lane so its easily cleared.

5: there is a limit to what each person can pay attention too. Your trading in lane? the mid laner can walk top and be there quicker then ur paying attention too. Top laners spend alot of time trying to play around the enemy jungler. And the good ones can usually pay attention to the mid laner too. But somtimes you see the junglers and mid laners and then boom the enemy support is ganking you.

6: Alot of times there is nothing you can do and you need to accept that. I have watched alot of the lcs games this season. Guess what? when the top laner gets camped, he dies 99% of the time, vision or no vision. You know what the counterplay to it is? Its his jungler and mid laner always being ready to either counter gank or go dive bot as soon as it starts happening.

But honestly the worst thing about top lane is this: Mid laners and adc's always have the option of " i can just play at a safe range and become useful later since i scale". Junglers usually have the option of " im alittle behind so ima farm it out for a couple min and only do low risk ganks." Supports always have the option " Well im always gonna be useful and i dont need gold, so i just need to keep my adc alive." Most top laners need gold to be useful, dont scale well so they rely on early and mid game power spikes, and they have no safe way of contributing to the teams success. Thats why is so extra frustrating getting camped top because you know you will probobly be useless now the rest of the game. Over half of the top lane roster isnt even worth picking if you cant get a gold lead reliably every game.

Eedat7 votes

It's fairly obvious that YOU are the one looking at things only from one angle

ADCs are dogshit useless when behind. Your options are either the enemy lets you farm or get hard carried. I know it's popular to hate on ADCs but the fact remains its probably the single most feast or famine role in the game.

Junglers are also dogshit useless. Get behind, get invaded, get counter jungled. You own team takes your camps. People get furious when you take buffs that you desperately need for XP. Trash gold income compared to laners. No tower to stand under. Just standing in XP range isn't an option. Oh, your team isn't going to help you when you get invaded either. "Shit jungler feeds then no ganks". Have fun.

No champ can shove you under tower in the first wave. None. The last one that could was Taliyah and she got gutted for it.

No champ is going to 100-0 dive you during laning phase unless you've already fed the shit out of them. Maybe don't greed for that last wave and just back when you're low?

There is no way a midlaner is running from mid to top during the course of one trade. Not happening. No way. Pay attention to your map. If I can check my minimap while trading for their jungler as a shitty low gold scrub, you can too.

Again, you are straight up wasting your wards period.

"well they just showed bot so it would take them at least a minute to get up here, but the likelihood of them running here without clearing a camp or two is practically zero so I have a bit longer".

100% complete waste. You know they can't be there for at the very minimum a minute. If your ward lasts for 90 seconds, 60 of that is completely wasting during time that you know for a fact they can't be there. Wait 50 seconds, THEN place the ward

I'm kind of figured you didn't even read the whole thing for these last parts. I straight up said these weren't 100% methods. You know what? Just read the conclusion again. I'm not going to retype it when it's been there for you to read the whole time

ADC's are not useless in any stage. Even when behind, they have range and the option to buy Statikk Shiv to waveclear and stall till they get stronger. A melee top laner 1) doesn't have range, 2)doesn't have the easy option to waveclear. I think that's what he means. Sivir is always useful in a team manner as long as she has built one item to waveclear effectively.

Avios12 votes

Statikk did get nerfed, it's not as strong for waveclear now.

Very well written post, brings up a lot of great points that people of almost all skill levels need. And yes, the super obvious "lvl 3 gank" still works in Diamond. I will never understand why it is so hard for even experienced top laners to put down a ward at 2:40

GJ OP, have my upvote!

This, this so much. As a jungler I can't fathom how toplaners still fall for it in Diamond. It is so fucking telegraphed.

Troll for Trump13 votes
  1. You can't always ward at 2:45. Some champs are also immobile and succeptible to ganks, and you won't always have the option of freezing the lane right outside your turret. Even if you do, some jglers can still dive you and get away with it. In addition, by freezing lanes, you give up pressure. This means you not only waste your top laner's early game (lvs 1-3), but you also open your jgler up to invades. Some champs plain need to play aggressive or risk getting screwed over. Tanks are great at laning because they don't need to all-in; they'd much rather have no interaction at all, so they never have to deal with getting screwed over by lvl 3 ganks. All they do is wait until they have their ult and exert global pressure, while non-tanks need to get fed and pressure the enemy to prevent them from roaming and become relevant (due to overcosted items and their champs not being the strongest carries). Playing a carry in top lane feels more punishing than just picking a tank.

  2. Freezing isn't easy. Please don't oversimplify it like that.

  3. Top lane really has little roam options. Only tanks have easy access to global presence, but tanks rarely (and shouldn't be able to) shove the wave against any non-tank. TP nerfs make going bot hard to pull off and also make your tower vulnerable. By far the best option is to invade the jgl, but with ward nerfs from ages past, that has long become obsolete

Eedat11 votes

No champion needs to win lane by level 3 stop it. If you're champ does need to win that early, my suggestion would to be pick a champ that isn't complete trash. Sorry you feel the need to play stupidly aggressive and justify it with the need to win lane by the third wave.

Freezing actually is easy. Even if you don't perma freeze, you can set up a slow push and hard shove at the right time to reset it.

You actually have plenty of roam opportunities if you pay the waves right. You can roam mid or group up with your jungler to invade when you play the waves correctly.

Notice how in my thread I point out these are not 100% guaranteed. Every single role is susceptible to just a series of bad circumstances. Maybe you messed up the wave and the other person took advantage. Maybe you greeded for that last wave when you knew it was dangerous. Shit happens. Being "OMG completely powerless to the almighty jungler" is a fat sack of BS though

  1. Current state of top lane in mind; this is wrong, and you should know it's wrong. Take Riven vs Maokai for example. You have to smash them in lane, and the unfortunate reality is the best chance for that is usually levels 2-3. This is because tanks / tanky bruisers have better items in terms of gold efficiency early-mid game.

  2. Freezing is easy on paper, less so when you're not playing training mode. Matchup -dependant, of course. You simplify too much.

  3. In an ideal scenario, yes. In an environment where you get punished? No. You lose tower first and then get outroamed, outrotated, and outplayed from there on. Unless your mid laner's a potato. You forget that roaming is not always a risk-free thing to do. Even more so (as per Downright Darius' statement) when you play a non-tank top.

Jungler pressure is a massive factor in current meta game. There's no denying it.

IDk if its true anymore with conqueror, but Riven is pretty trash atm, she brings nothing to her team that a Camille Fiora Jayce Gnar couldn't because she will always try to build AD and needs to snowball early, which isn't a viable strategy especially once people become competent in terms of playing the game.

True from what I've seen, Conqueror seems to have fixed that issue a notch.

But bruisers were never completely unviable to begin with. Just not less than optimal picks in far more situations than tanks.

As a Jungler who has taken to top lane recently, I agree with everything stated.

Don't want to be ganked top? Don't make yourself an easy target.

More than just lane control, minion manipulation changes the shape of matchup fights and trades. I've been playing a ton of Volibear top recently and I've been abusing this twicefold; throwing the enemy into my own minions and shutting down the enemy minions. Even without those forms of CC however, it should be so easy to understand that minion damage is meaningful and stop going for stupid trades in the enemy's 12+ minions.

Yes.

One should also learn where to ward too based on the Jungler. If you're red side and playing against a Kayn, don't shove the lane and ward river, you're never going to see Kayn coming. Another fun thing in regards to the last point, again if you're Red side, run into the enemy Jungle and hit their Blast Cone back to lane. Gives the enemy one less avenue to gank you by and streamlines prime warding spots for you.

Honestly if you're controlling the lane correctly, the rule "glance at your minimap every CS" is pretty good. I'd say 10 seconds is already waaaay too long to be much help. With that said though, I just realized something yesterday while playing with a bunch of Counter Junglers on my team. Every time my Jungler is in the enemy's topside Jungle, I gotta shove, and hard. They're much closer to help me and vice versa, so not only is Map Awareness a good defensive tool from ganks, but a great offensive tool to establish lane dominance and set up good protection for yourself and your Jungler.

Yes.

I've heard something about Garen that basically gives my opinion of Top Lane. Play a braindead champion like Garen. Can you win consistently with him? If yes, your macro mechancis are probably fine. If not, if you can't reliably win Top Lane with Garen, there's a good chance that you're just a bad Top Laner as a whole.

The problem is top laners are just stupid. The all have the urge to solo carry and just 1vs1 the enemy at every point but forget to ward OR ward and don't look at it, so they just die to a gank and then it's the jungle who is op. Maybe it's from watching to much hashinshin.

So basically ward at 2:45 when jungler is waiting in the bush to get yourself killed

Or you both aren't retard and both try to freeze hmmm fun such interaction

Or how about we gut full hp 2:45 ganks and actually make it high risk high reward again instead of zero risk game winning reward

Eedat6 votes

Who cares dude. Sorry is is not exactly 3 minutes. "He was off by 5 seconds! That makes the whole point wrong!" Seriously? The point is still if you keep getting ganked at the exact same time every game and you still don't see it coming then it's on you. Junglers fall off. They don't beat solo lanes to 5 or 6 and beyond if they're not stupid fed

CyberBalt6 votes

I have a bit more sympathy for mid because of its location and number of ways in, but even then the lane is a lot shorter

Huh? Mid is MUCH easier to avoid ganks in than top lane.

League is not a 1v1 game. Your 1v1 never existed.

Why? Because you said so? Obviously the game as a WHOLE is not a 1 v 1 game, but it's not unreasonable for players to want to have a fair 1 v 1 early game. There's plenty of time for teamplay later.

For the rest of the post, I will just say that you don't seem to be factoring in that many top laners are very immobile and have no easy way to back off. Additionally, most junglers have a ton of ways to get ganks off, sometimes even if you ward it doesn't matter because of how easily they can get in. Plus, if the enemy laner is playing a tank or someone with a good amount of cc, they can just lock you in until the jungler arrives.

Yaśuo Main4 votes

Another thing. He doesn't acknowledge the fact that players don't expect to get ganked 3 minutes in, he only assumes they think they will NEVER get ganked at all.

RenownedWheat425 votes

If people bitch about getting ganked 3 min in every game, why would they not expect to get ganked 3 min in every game?

Yaśuo Main2 votes

Because having to sit at tower 3 minutes into the game is stupid. It only puts you behind, and if you cant do anything without being ganked, then that's not a me problem.

JackMcSnipeyz4 votes

Why? Those level 3 ganks are so easy to avoid, literally stop your auto pilot mode and last hit the first 3 waves instead of trying to establish lane dominance at 3rd minute to show how alpha you are. It happens to me every game top, the other laner is pushing like crazy for no reason and sets himself up for the easiest gank imaginable.

For your first point: obviously it's not reasonable to say it should stay a 1 v 1 the whole time, and I didn't mean that it should. However, nor is it reasonable for top lane matchups to be decided soley by the jungler. The OP makes it sound so simple "oh just freeze the wave, learn better wave management" and stuff like that, but there are several reasons it's not so black and white:

  1. Some champions simply can't avoid pushing the wave.
  2. Sometimes, it's necessary for you to WIN lane, not just go even. Guess what, if you simply play passive against a Nasus and never bother trying to punish him for anything, you're gonna regret it later in the game.
  3. If you are a lane bully, you are not using your early game power at all if you're just hiding from ganks.

Right now, the best way to win top lane is: stonewall top lane, go full tank, never push, and wait for jungle ganks. And I think that's dumb as hell.

Why do you suddenly expect your enemy to not try to win?

I never said nor implied this.

EDIT: Just gonna add this. If you are a tank and go even, it doesn't really matter. You can still do tank things, you have boatloads of cc built into your kit, and you will always be important in teamfights. If you are a FIGHTER and don't get ahead, on the other hand, you are SIGNIFICANTLY less useful than that tank. That's why they CAN'T just freeze the wave and play passively all lane. And even if they COULD, I don't want to play a game where wave management is more important than ... you know ... actually fighting the enemy laner.

This. Even tanking one or two tower shots is worth it, if you can flash your level 7 mastery in return.

redniwediS3 votes

The only point I would argue against at all is the first one, and that's only because I'm in a habit of warding my jungler's top buff before going to lane. I know how to manage a wave, and by the time the level 3 gank would show up I'm nice and close to my tower, but at that point I don't usually have a ward.

Eedat2 votes

I play both and I would stay stop doing that. I just hang out by the buff until I have to go. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate it as a jungler. Normally what I do is when I clear that buff I'll drop my own ward for top lane. However that's just me and you can't be certain everyone will. Also, if my first clear is slower than theirs it doesn't help anyway. The only thingthat really bothers me as a jungler is when people afk under their tower and wait for minions

AirKingNeo3 votes

Option 1) If you freeze, you don't have time to ward nor the lane pressure. Let's say they fuck up and you want to all in them for them fucking up.

Jungler is there and you die to a gank that couldn't ward for because you froze.

Option 2) You push or don't freeze so you can ward. Well now you're open up to gank and will probably die any time you try to trade.

MohawkBird2 votes

No, because bot lane is ranged, meaning you don't have to be as deep in the lane to trade with people. Same with mid lane, and mid is a smaller lane (easier to get back to turret).

Also, top lane has to run teleport, so they don't have the option of heal, barrier, and exhaust.

srsly, the boards and people I hear talking about the game almost always say the same things when talking about top lane.

"jungler camps me" "I get ganked before 3 minutes" etc, but they are the same people who have zero map sense and refuse ward at the time when they KNOW that the enemy jungler will be in the area to gank them early. They hard push and have call BS when the enemy jungler comes to pick up their free kill

haaaaaaalp1 votes

Because it is not just level 3 ganks anymore. Junglers have free reign to gank top whenever they want and it is up to you to guess when to ward. On top of that, the window to win top lane hard enough to actually matter is so small that taking the time to ward is often the difference between getting a lead and snowballing the lane or going even and becoming irrelevant because a top laner who is not ahead is irrelevant mid and late game.

MohawkBird3 votes

[deleted]

Your point about "taking the time to ward is often the difference between getting a lead...or going even" is honestly just straight BS. The only possible way warding will ever give you a disadvantage is if you make the mistake.

If you walk away from a wave at your tower to simply ward, you'll lose out, and it'll be your own fault. Another possible scenario would be going for deep wards without knowledge on the enemy, which is, again, your own fault.

In a normal scenario, warding will never bring you or your team at a disadvantage. Ever. To try and say that warding is often the difference between snowballing or being irrelevant is ridiculously absurd. Exaggerated to the point where it just can't be taken seriously.

We aren't talking about normal scenarios right now. Top lane is is a historically bad place. Simply going even or barely winning is not enough. Top laners need to absolutely crush their lane opponent or else they will not be relevant in the face of marksmen mid or late game. The time spent warding is enough to make the difference between hard winning your lane and simply coming out ahead.

MohawkBird3 votes

[deleted]

haaaaaaalp1 votes

{quoted}

I agree with you that top lane is in a bad place. The thing I don't agree with is the whole circlejerk revolving around the idea that top lane gets camped all the time.

I just don't see your point about warding to be very strong at all. By warding, you sacrifice a couple of seconds of farming (and that's being generous, typically you only ward when you are pushing the lane, in which case you aren't missing out on anything). By not warding, you risk losing your entire lane due to a gank. You also risk your jungler being unable to help and gank your lane if the opponent chooses to ward, while you refuse to buy a control ward.

You are saying that you need to come out of lane stomping to be relevant. I personally think that's a exaggeration, but I suppose I'll give it to you. My question is, why do you think a couple seconds of warding will be the difference between absolutely crushing your lane opponent and simply winning lane? It's one thing to think that, but I need you to give me some reasons as to why because I just can't see it. If you take two seconds to ward your river bush, you are missing, at absolute maximum, a few creeps and their worth in exp. When your opponent goes to ward, he is also missing that same thing.

I'll also ask this: What's worse, having not warded and getting ganked, securing your position in uselessness, or having warded, potentially avoiding ganks, and winning lane or coming out at least even? Obviously wards won't be able to stop every single gank from happening, but they do deter the vast majority as long as you still have map awareness. Why would you bother risking being utterly useless because you think a couple seconds ward time will hurt you?

It seems your risk vs reward is not really being properly analyzed.

Here is the thing, i'm not saying that warding is the wrong decision, just that there is no good decision. If you ward and let the lane go even, you are irrelevant. If you don't ward, you are leaving yourself open to ganks to put you behind.

The thing you have to understand about top lane is that there are very few opportunities to get good trades to get ahead of your opponent and after the first few trades, the other person simply backs and teleports back into lane. The only way to crush your opponent hard enough to be relevant mid and late game is to be on top of them 24/7 and squeezing out every bit of extra damage you can get from your trades. You are on a clock from the start of the game to when bot tower falls and bot lane rotates top to get far ahead of your lane opponent. If you don't, you simply do not make a difference and the game goes on to be decided by which team has the better bot lane and jungler.

You have zero clue what you're talking about, your opinions on the subject of top lane are wrong.

I can provide a link to a Diamond account too, but that doesn't prove I own it.

Take your hostility to reddit where you can join a high elo circle jerk in a place where someone will care.

Hi pal, eedat has no clue what he's talking about and I bet you don't either since you agree with him.

I got to plat 2 going full ad darius and he can't even climb out of silver.

OMEGALUL all of the lower elo folks who think they found the magic key to top lane are clueless.

Actually I didn't say I agree with him, only that you were being an asshole and no one cares. Doesn't really matter what rank you are if no one wants to listen to you because of your personality after all.
