Why Does Riot Not Attempt A New Map?

It's been since like . . . mid season 3 for me. A new map would be nice. Actually, a couple new maps would be nice.

Going to space wasn't necessary, if you say things like that then you shouldn't get to enjoy the riches of the ambitious. That's right, get the hell off of my continent and let Spain know that it was a waste of time; that way Portugal can say "Told you so."

Going to space added something of value to humanity. Adding a new type of football field to play on side-by-side with the old one doesn't.

League's a game about Lanes and Turrets. You don't play Summoners Rift to interact with Dragons, Barons, or Rift Herald any more than you play Twisted Treeline to play with Alters and Vile Maw. For that reason alone new maps are much harder to make feel unique, since it's the lanes and the jungle between it that needs to feel different.

I know I'd be totally behind more map skins (like Butchers Bridge), but unique maps are a different beast.

Arena football??

Part of the problem is too many champs are also designed and balanced around SR. Certain champs are fair or just ok in SR but become way more useful in something like Aram. A new map runs the same risks. Look at the siege mode its just SR cut in half with some new rules and toys but certain champs just become oppressive in 8t with nust those logistic changes.

dark star was a new map

it was a mode ... not an actual permanent map

Because, for the same reason that dominion was taken out.

Most people play Summoners Rift, Howling Abyss, and Twisted Treeline.

There is just a lot of work to try maintaining a new map if it is not going to be played very much at all......... They would also have to figure out the map, set some new goals for the map, try to make it feel different than the other maps........

And for the record, the Dark Star Singularity has its very own map. It was created for that game mode. Almost all the others are just reworks on the permanent maps that were there........ I say were because Ascension is played on the Dominion map which is now a game mode lol

So yes, they did make a new map. It just is not a new permanent game mode. Theres a difference.

Not to mention queue times if you split up the players on different maps.

It is difficult, likely impossible, to have multiple permanent maps that are about equally popular unless you design your game from the start around it. Dota and Dota 2 were designed with a single map in mind, and don't really need an additional one, because the one map those games have aims to provide all of the possibilities of multiple maps, and provides a single, consistent balance environment. League of Legends is a direct descendant of that design philosophy, and attempts to switch things up even slightly (e.g. Dominion, Twisted Treeline) have required tremendous work for not all that much of a payoff. Even ARAM, arguably the second most popular map after Summoner's Rift, suffers from significant and long-lasting balance problems while only coming at a fraction of the Rift's popularity.

It's also worth mentioning that even games with multiple maps, such as HotS, tend to stick to minor differences, because champion design tends to be a bit too rigid to allow for much more deviation. A capture-the-flag mode, for example, would have to require a map-specific overhaul to any hypermobile champion, as would a king-of-the-hill mode with defensive builds (imagine having to deal with Heimerdinger in that scenario). Even with HotS's more fluid builds and only relatively small variations in focus on AoE clearing, roaming, boss killing, etc., some maps disproportionately favor some characters over others.

The TL;DR to this post is that making new, permanent maps will never be viable as long as the cost of their implementation, as well as that of map-specific champion balancing, exceeds the potential value gained from their creation. It could perhaps be possible with a much less rigid model for champion customization, but as long as League retains its current systems, that might not happen.

I mean, i'd like reskin's of the maps to be more common, so it's possible to go into a normals game or something and randomly end up on one of the different reskins of summoner's rift. That would be nice.

I wonder what Riot's policy is on those reskined maps. Cause when they had the winter themed map, it was pretty much available in Norms but not in ranked. Would they have to do extensive testing to insure such a maps doesn't screw with ranked integrity?

That in mind, I don't think Riot is going to make enterly new maps, if it's only going the same mode, except on a new map. The only real exception to that is TT, but that at least changes up the game in terms of size of the map, size of the teams, and the game length. Outside of that though, I doubt that we will see a new map, that isn't tied to the RGMQ.

Because they cannot balance the existing one.

Their meta has begun to clench around their game like a choker. It's pretty restricting.

Honestly, I played the dominion a lot... I miss it so much. And I think that they don't need to be a competitive hyper balanced new maps... You know, some ppl still play games to have fun... ARAM is not balanced at all and it is fun... other maps could have the same ideology

I am playing league less and less because I do not like that repetitive and rigid play style that summoners rift have. I want different FUN maps to play with my favorite champs and friends without having to be dedicated on not dying, warding, farming like crazy... I want to play have FUN, thats how league was many seasons ago.
