Jungle, the new Mage Niche?

So since I had some good experience with Lissandra jungle and now I read of some people trying out Zyra jungle... could it be that with Runic Echo the jungle has become open for mages, after they were completly shoved out of midlane by assassins?

Let's see what mages typically bring to the table:

  • Damage -> often AoE Damage
  • Some sort of CC

One helps with clearing, the other with ganking. However, they also have weaknesses, especially in their first jungle clear which is super painful. Often it's smarter to just clear two or three camps, recall, get hunters pots and then start for real.

Usually the argument was that mages are too mana hungry, but with blue buff early and an item that gives 150% base mana-regen while in jungle that is barely a problem from my experience. Also, once they have Runics clearing speed is not a problem either.

And the best part: ganks are brutal. This is what mages might excel in. Carry junglers like Yi don't really have good ganks due to the lack of cc. Tank junglers have the cc, but alone they often lack the damage to kill their target solo fast enough - unless you have something like AP Zac crashing in. Mages have both, especially when they are bursty. Gotta try Veigar jungle at some point, and I can also see Karma working with her shield and the root for ganks... Oh and don't forget Morgana! Free Sustain from the passive and some obscene amout of cc with level 6 ganks (if she hits the Q that is...).

Don't forget Karthus. Tried him out in a game some days ago, totally kicked ass!

Been playing Malz jung for quite the while now, both ap and ad. Great clear's, objective killing (solo dragon and herald by level 3) and post 6 ganks.

Not far off, but almost.

Runeglaive was limiting the AP champions that could be in the Jungle. Before, item 1039 allowed a Mage to Jungle, yet the upgrade was lackluster, so most Mages simply just went into a Lane.

Now that Runic Echoes allows for just about any Mage to get a decent upgrade, almost any Mage can jungle now. Some that are currently Middle Lane might be better off in the Jungle, especially ones that have a lot of limited DPS since killing monsters usually removes the limit from the DPS.

Ganking is the big limiter, but the 10% movement speed has really helped with that problem. As long as the Mage has CC, they can gank basically.

Ahri Annie Azir Brand Cassiopeia Galio Heimerdinger Karthus Kassadin Kennen Lissandra Morgana Orianna Ryze Singed Swain Syndra Veigar Velkoz Viktor Vladimir Zilean

These are all champions that could, previously, not Jungle or struggled to do so or were better off going into lane. Now, this is all questionable of whether they perform better in the Jungle or in lane. Most would likely stay in a lane, but some might surprise you for what they can do in the Jungle.

Worked even before Runic Echo just fine, now it should work even better.

Although I prefered using Cinderhulk to increase the HP from the passive gain... (RoA+Tear get even more cost efficient then)

Akali Karma Zyra Katarina

Just to complete your list, those might be possible candidates too.

Not to mention the tanks that can consider Runeglaive too. I build Full AP Zac once. Funniest game ever. Your gapcloser alone deals massive damage already, your ult can kill squishies...

Don't have time to read it all, but I noticed the part about the painful early clear.

For a while, I played Kayle Jungle and hated how bad her first clear was. What I did was start off by grabbing a support item of my choice, bringing bandit mastery, grabbing a vision ward, and heading top lane.

The goal is to get your top laner a considerable lead by laying down poke, zoning the enemy from farm, and also grabbing some gold for yourself. Drop your pink on your buff so the enemy jungler doesn't take advantage of you not being in the jungle. Once you hit level 3 or 4, head back and grab your jungle item. Now you can clear no problem since you have all of your abilities and improved stats, and when you gank you can tax to the benefit of you and your laner (if you got Relic Shield).

Surprisingly effective, wins top lane and gets you ahead as well.
