I really wish ARAM would get at least 0,5% of attention SR gets

Saianna··148 votes·26,059 views

EDIT: Hooooly! Went to cinema & bear with friends for 4~hours, and now I have 43 posts from you guys! Gonna read them all!

Our whole attention we get from Riot lasts about 1 week every year when winter sales come. And even then they ignore us, as playerbase.

I understand: SR, LCS, Ranked, Lee and Zed are all very important for the future of #1 MOBA game. I'm not trying to destroy this sacred balance.

Right now NA players received their Hextech crafting. I was hyped, I really though Riot is slowly giving some skins for "free". And as I was learning what this cool system is, I stumbled on "ARAM games don't count".. Needles to say all of my hype evaporated.

I have 3,1k games in ARAM (almost prefect 50/50 split wins-loses). I play only ARAM. I even ARAM while I ARAM.

Why ARAM can't have it's own "champion mastery"? Why ARAM can't have it's own "hextech crafting"? Why ARAM doesn't even have Rioter? (Even Dominion had 1... I think..) Why no Rioter wants to talk about ARAM? Is this "too childish" to talk about?

I understand that ARAM should be a "fun mode", but it's hard to have fun when you feel like "unwanted child".

"Out of the blue" I wonder.. Whenever Morello says about changes or things in general he says: "We believe that..." "We did that..." Who are those "We"? Can we talk with them? Are their voices in changes as important as Meddlers? Do they always agree with changes? Do they work with Riot in Riot HQ? Or are they some 3rd party group hired by Riot to help with balance? (outsorcing). What happen to Phreak? Guinsoo? They used to talk with us so often..

Back to topic: Could Riot delegate one Rioter to take charge of ARAM? So we, ARAM players, could have our own place to talk about with someone about stuff like map balance, randomness, bugs, items from other modes, maybe some small updates? Ofcourse that person would need to be active :)

No we don't want Riot to give it more attention, last time they noticed a map that wasn't SR they deleted it.

Just remember, Riot specifically stated which maps they felt were healthy when they deleted Dominion.

SR, ARAM, and Featured Game modes. I'm pretty sure there is still one more map out there. Guess it didn't make the "cut". (T_T)

I'm going to jump in here and try to help out. o^_^O

RE Champ Mastery in ARAM: Champ Mastery was just initially developed and rolled out on SR first (this factors in all the testing, balancing, tuning, etc required to get it working on SR). During this process, it's not that ARAM was "intentionally ignored", but just that SR's workload came first (same goes for Twisted Treeline).

As a mostly ARAM player, I'm personally looking forward to having Champ Mastery in ARAM. ^_^ We're currently in the process of customising the Champ Mastery algorithm to accommodate the Rotating Game Mode queue and we want to look at ARAM and Twisted Treeline at the same time if possible. I agree though, it sucks right now while loot has just been launched.

RE Loot in ARAM: Any mode with Champ Mastery active will also trigger loot chests on the same requirements. This would go for Rotating Game Modes, ARAM & TT, just as it does for SR now.

RE Dedicated Rioter for ARAM: You're right, we could do a better job at owning non-SR experiences. The goals of SR and non-SR modes are inherently different though, so there won't always be a one-to-one Rioter crossover. EG: there isn't a whole balance team dedicated to just ARAM.

I personally play a lot of ARAM (and obviously Featured Game Modes) though and try to jump in where I think I can answer questions or add context. I've shed light before on exactly how ARAM's random roll works and our team owned implementing the snowball last year.

Feel free to hit me up if you want in the future. <3

Hey, quick question. I've noticed lately that arams seem to take longer than SR now. Is this just me, or is there data to back that up?

Zielmann6 votes

Good to hear that mastery in ARAM isn't actually off the table. Last thing I heard made it sound like it had been discussed and passed up on.

Kürama4 votes

You could have given Dominion attention as well and you would have seen it's popularity grow like never before. Your theory of Dominion being a failure with or without a fraction of attention is just that, a theory.

SociopathFriend3 votes

They gave Dominion plenty of attention- did you see a Cinematic for ARAM's launch?

OurLestrade6 votes

Wasn't the Dominion cinematic never officially released or something? Remember reading that somewhere.

I THANK YOU for visiting this thread, Rioter Latency!

As a mostly ARAM player, I'm personally looking forward to having Champ Mastery in ARAM

Does that mean, that you, as Rioter promise that ARAM will receive champion mastery in some future? [keyword: promise]

And does that mean ARAM will share the same champion mastery as SR? Reason why I am asking is lots of people disagree on ARAM having anything in common with "mastering" a champion. So.. We could always have out own kind of "ARAM champion mastery", which would work for everyone.

You're right, we could do a better job at owning non-SR experiences. The goals of SR and non-SR modes are inherently different though, so there won't always be a one-to-one Rioter crossover. EG: there isn't a whole balance team dedicated to just ARAM.

Being right doesn't always feels good :( I'd never agree on delegating anyone from Riot to work on balance of ARAM. New summoner spells? Sure I'd love it (thanks for snowball btw my thirds most used spell after flash & barrier), maybe some minor tweaks to map balance (turrets/health relics), but nothing beyond that.

I'd be happy to have someone from "Featured Game modes" slightly (alot more) active :)

I'll let myself be seriously nitpicking and annoying here, so I'm sorry:

In the link about ARAM RNG you have provided on 08-20-2014, you have said those words:

Remember though, as pointed out previously in this thread and others, asymmetry in people's champion pools (whether intentionally manufactured or naturally occurring through varied champion pricing) will probably cause certain champs to come up statistically more often than others. This is what we're hoping to address by exploring the idea of unlocking all champions for ARAM.

19 months have passed and.. Is it finally good time to talk about unlocking all champions? I feel bad about ARAM accounts now, as much as on first day of Murders Bridge

EDIT: Danngit, tried to keep it simple & short.. Sorry. Btw where could we send ideas for modes/items/spells related to modes (like snowball for aram), cause I don't wanna boast, but I believe there's a good spell for ARAM worth checking out which could solve "poke being pokey'".

RiotL4T3NCY12 votes

I can't use the word "promise", as anything can happen in game dev. :/ I personally think it would be cool though, and there's a positive vibe around it along with Rotating game modes and Twisted Treeline. Our particular team is just focused on the Rotating game modes right now.

I still like the idea of unlocking all champs in ARAM (I think it would kill ARAM accounts in one swift stroke). We ended up not pursuing much deeper after that time 2 years ago, but we may be able to revisit it at some point.

If you have any ideas for modes/spells/items/etc the boards are the best place for them! :D Rather than some secret inbox for stuff like that, they should live out in the open where everyone can contribute and give feedback. Many Rioters are reading a lot of the boards content too, even if they don't personally jump in.

Just a general question about ARAM: What is Riot thinking about the state of Mark/Dash? Specifically, is there a possibility for it to be removed in the future, or at least an ARAM queue where it isn't availlable?

I used to be an ARAM only guy with a few thousand games, but stopped playing when Mark/Dash was introduced. It would be really cool to know if it's worth keeping my hopes up or if Riot thinks it's fine the way it is and I should just move on.

the Anarchit3cht14 votes

They won't be removing it. It makes a number of champions who were otherwise useless in ARAM now effective. But I have a feeling you're one of those people who liked to poke from range and are upset now because that Renekton or Swain can actually get to you instead of struggling to get close while you and your Morg/Lux/Karma/Ashe/Ezreal team kited them into oblivion. I don't know for certain, but the only people who actually have an issue with Mark/Dash are those people.

There won't be two seperate Queues because it'll split the player base up too much and significantly impact queue times.

RiotL4T3NCY15 votes

The current Mark/Dash feels like it's in a pretty good place. ARAM's queue health has actually increased since it was introduced. Previously lame-duck champions are now viable picks (which also means lower dodge rates) that you can have a blast on, and it's far from the "100% must pick spell" that first launched.

I am all about Udyr on ARAM now. :D

majulito4 votes

I always felt that once the first tower goes down champs that struggled early start to shine because now they have more running room. Has the map opened up they begin to shine because it becomes hard to outplay someone running at you when you move slower and you have one direction to go.

I was never a fan of snowball but I take it because it just makes things harder for the enemy. Champs that already were able to close the gap and engage have only become stronger because they use their gap closer or snowball first then use the other if you try to escape . It also is a pain when someone gets hits and walks to the center of your team (or panic flashes) so the enemy can wreck whole team through no fault of your own.

There also the problem of visibility of a white ball on a white map with white particles flying across it along with all the other stuff flying on it that make the ball hard to dodge. That and the range is pretty long I think there should be some risk to at least throw the thing instead of it being chucked from a screen away and then you fly all the way over while being invulnerable along the way.

Thanks for reply :)

I have to say I am very.. dissapointed about this part:

I still like the idea of unlocking all champs in ARAM (I think it would kill ARAM accounts in one swift stroke). We ended up not pursuing much deeper after that time 2 years ago, but we may be able to revisit it at some point.

If you, as Head-Rioter responsible for fatured game modes (Right?) like an idea, which was proposed hundreds of times over and over... Then what stops you from implementing it? There has to be some deeper reason for this. I remember when ARAM was introduced, not even 1 hour passed and there was a thread about this..

Well.. What can I say... I'd love to see unlocked all champions for ARAM. So once this new rotating mode will be finished and you guys will get some "free time for other stuff" to work on, Please revisit ARAM, we, ARAM players will be very happy :)

EDIT: Just before I started to write this, I finished an ARAM game. I've left overview window open. Now when I look at champions & wins (and nicks) I had at least 5 aram accounts in this game. I'm sad.. Very sad..

Is there a balance team for "non-SR modes in general" though? ManWolfAxeBoss used to head up the Alternate Maps team (managing TT/Dom/ARAM health and balance), but he's now occupied with work on SR balance. Have Alternate Maps been folded into the Featured Modes umbrella, does a separate Alternate Maps team still exist, or has Riot simply dropped all of it entirely?

I'm asking because there's at least two significant issues that haven't been addressed in months.

  1. TT still doesn't have BF Sword enabled. NLR was re-enabled with the Mage itemization update that reduced the price of the item, but that didn't happen with BFS and the Marksman itemization update. Essence Reaver in particular has no counterpart on Treeline.
  2. ARAM still has no AP vision item. Twin Shadows, Lightbringer, and Hextech Sweeper used to be the trinity of vision item for magic, physical, and tank preferences, respectively. The removal of Twin Shadows left a gap in trap detection options.
RiotMANWOLFAXEBOSS7 votes

Hey man,

Thanks for the write-up. I still do some alternate map stuff and am hoping to do an ARAM pass in the next couple months :) But ya, mostly focused on SR now.

  1. What are your hopes with bringing BF Sword to TT? We could do that, but since it's just a component item I can't help but assume it's really the full items you're after. You mention Essence Reaver specifically. Any other item gaps that you feel SR has and TT doesn't? For ER, we chose not to include this item because of the MP5 aura on the map. We felt like it was superfluous and ended up just being a trap. Do you think AD, mana-dependent casters (Ez, Lucian, etc.) are in need of this?

  2. Should address this in the ARAM pass :)

Solidair38 votes

Essence Reaver's primary purpose USED to be mana restore, yes, but now it also comes with a hefty 30% cdr (when bought with crit, obv) which is essential to some marksman this season. Champions like Sivir were specifically tuned to function more appropriately with CDR this season, but she can't utilize the core item to make this a reality for her.

My Waifu Vanilla2 votes

It is really the fact that AD itemization kind of sucks unless you are an AD caster. Sanguine Blade is worse than BT in almost every way (especially now that BT has a shield). Dervish Blade is now much worse than Mercurial since Mercurial now gives even more stats (and actual AD). Van Damms is OKAY, but would be nice to probably also have IE in the game just in case and just make their passives unique from each other (like RFC and Shiv do). Duskblade would honestly also be a fairly nice item to see on the map since it is typically full of health stacking bruisers who would either like to use the item (J4 and such) or would be fairly weak to it since their armor values are fairly low and would help deal with their health stacking (since BoRK is in a bad spot and not many BoRK users are very strong since they are almost all ADCs and do not have good items to work with).

As stated ER is now MUCH better than it used to be and makes a lot of champions much stronger than they would be without it (and have been balanced around the item as well as seen with Lucian and crew).

Also, the MAIN reason (iirc) B.F. and items built from it (along with NLR) was because B.F. cost 1550+ when TT was reworked and was counter intuitive to save that much money on that map. B.F. has since then been reduced and price and nothing happened, but the second NLR went down in price it and all of its items were instantly put onto TT which seems fairly unfair.

TL;DR TT itemization could use some help and adding B.F. could help a bit since right now it is you are a mage or bruiser/tank and there are no carries really to play since you are stuck with hardly any items to support any sort of crit build (Van Damms only one that gives AD iirc so you will have high crit but no AD so what is the point). This could lead to unnecessarily long games since you cannot seige well without many ranged options (let alone mainly mages) and sometimes causes my team when winning to just run around the map endlessly while we wait for Vile to respawn since diving is too risky for what it is worth (especially 2.5 AS Nexus Turret that takes double inhibs to take down without a clean ace).

Minarde3 votes

Sanguine vs BT is actually kind of complex. Sanguine offers a much earlier power-spike, since the stacks make it incredibly cost-efficient. It's 1300 gold cheaper in exchange for 5% lifesteal and the shield. With that much gold, you could even buy a Giant's Belt, which always offers more health than BT's shield, and still have leftover gold. Sanguine certainly loses to BT in late-game slot-efficiency, but that's not the niche it's meant to fill.

Also, if the enemy team is relying on magic-damage waveclear, Banner of Command is a strong option. Doubly so if you combine it with Vilemaw buff.

My Waifu Vanilla3 votes

Idk I'm just turned off more from TT compared to last season. Last season it felt slightly more diverse, but when it is Trundle or Fiora wrecking any melee you have all game or any mage picking up FQC and it being ALMOST GLOBAL makes it very hard to enjoy anything you want to do.

Also, as I said before tanks can run wild on that map because it is SUPER suboptimal to run an ADC since crit itemization blows, and only Ezreal, Corki, Graves, and Quinn can do well without that much crit (Quinn isn't that good however due to how small the map is making her ult less useful).

I'm inclined to say "no", at least for the time being. ADCs in TT are incredibly strong right now, and I'm not even sure Ezreal would get Essence Reaver over Iceborn Gauntlet. As for Lucian, he doesn't need buffs right now.

Should the meta shift and ADCs fall out of favor, then giving them some new toys might be a good idea. Right now, ADCs are really common in Challenger 3v3 on EUW, at least.

As for other items, I looked at the list of items not on TT and I don't think there's any pressing need to add anything right now. Thornmail might be nice in order to deal with fed ADCs, though it might be too strong on a 3v3 map, I suppose.

So: ADCs are strong enough in this meta, introducing Essence Reaver might be an indirect buff to some ADCs, which might push the ADC meta even harder.

I agree. I believe they mentioned a while ago that champ mastery for aram was on their radar. I honestly learned how to play quite a few champs on aram since I was playing champs I would never pick otherwise on other game types. Maybe they could cap the mastery system to lvl 3 or 4 for aram.

EreinionofNoldor8 votes

I only want one thing from Riot regarding ARAMs. Put the vision from Twin Shadows on a different AP item. Putting it on FQC might be too OP, but we have a vision item for tanks and a vision item for ADCs. When Riot suddenly deleted Twin Shadows, now we have no vision item for AP champions except for a potion that expires and you have to rebuy every death.

MasterSomething7 votes

ARAM was a mode invented by the playerbase, and made an official mode by Riot for convenience. However, the issue with ARAM- It's inherently hard to balance AND make it fun at the same time. Other than the Bilgewater map, what else would they do? They already added the poro snowballs, and moved some items over. I feel like Riot doesn't want to put a Rioter there simply because they are afraid he/she and the ARAM community won't agree. The last thing they do is want to mess up a player made mode.

Saianna14 votes

You might not believe me, but I was there, playing very first ARAMs LOL has ever seen in custom games :)

They've already added few rather controversial parts to ARAM.

You might not know, but ARAM used to have Rioter in charge. For about a day. After that Rioter bailed for some reason. It came to the point where SPAM BOTS started spamming in main thread he made. So.. Yea..

The thing I remember most about old aram was just getting a game past champ select. Most people just dodged when they didn't like the matchup because there is no penalty in customs. So you go through about 10 lobbies and then the match finally started and 2 players afk. Ah, memories :)

I used to play exclusively ARAM until recently, I decided I wanted to get some mastery on champs. All that ARAM really put me out of practice for SR. I don't quite understand the lack of mastery on ARAM. Doesn't make much sense to me- you're still playing the champion, you're still improving with them. I can understand if it gives you less mastery, because of the lack of SR experience, but still.

Out of curiousity, has anybody received a key fragment in ARAM yet? I only play SR with friends and one of them (bless them) carried me with an S rank to get my second chest, and I want to earn keys but alas... I read in the Q&A that they'd drop in ARAM but I haven't gotten one yet ;o;

The Y2J Problem6 votes

Being placed into a position where you HAVE to play a bunch of different champions, and in a scenario where certain aspects like warding, map awareness, jungle timers and ganks all take a backseat to you just playing the champion?

Yeah, you're not mastering the champion at all. Definitely not.

For real though, Champ mastery should apply

Beacon 0F Light7 votes

But those are all aspects of the game that every champion has to deal with. Are you telling me that the difference between warding as Ahri and warding as Zed is that huge? Because I wouldn't call that a core part of knowing how to play a champion. Rather, it's knowing their abilities and when/how to use them, something that's just as important on aram as it is on SR.

The Y2J Problem6 votes

That's what I'm saying, it seems really odd that Champion Mastery doesn't apply to ARAM, seeing as these other aspects are actually left out. The only thing left is the actual mastering of the champion

Ooooh I didn't realize that was sarcasm. XP My bad.

Champion Mastery on ARAM would legit make no sense whatsoever. Honestly, besides promoting the fact that you play a certain champion a lot, it doesn't do anything to begin with. Mastery does not equal skill, I'm afraid. Adding it to ARAM would literally just be like saying "Hey, I've played enough games that it's given me this specific champ quite a bit!".

Hextech Crafting being on ARAM would have to be changed to fit the gamemode. It couldn't be because you did good with a champion on ARAM. That's not that hard, as the gamemode mostly relies on you getting a good comp, so either you do well or you do horrible. ARAM is usually a shorter gamemode, which means you would be able to farm them a lot easier.

Champion Mastery on ARAM would legit make no sense whatsoever.

Why your post sounds like some seriously sour butthurt?

Honestly, besides promoting the fact that you play a certain champion a lot, it doesn't do anything to begin with. Mastery does not equal skill, I'm afraid.

Believe it or not, but the same thing applies to SR. You like to play certain champion alot.. What does it have with skill?

Adding it to ARAM would literally just be like saying "Hey, I've played enough games that it's given me this specific champ quite a bit!".

Same as above, no difference with SR whatsoever

Hextech Crafting being on ARAM would have to be changed to fit the gamemode.

That's what I ask. Or can't you read?

It couldn't be because you did good with a champion on ARAM.

Please take some medicine for that sore ass of yours..

That's not that hard, as the gamemode mostly relies on you getting a good comp, so either you do well or you do horrible.

From the start of this season players make theads that SR became 1sided bloodbath. Where most of games are steamrolled by 1 team. So please enlighten me, where's difference?

Secondly, saying ARAM is easy is pretty ignorant bullshit to say. You try to act tough, but you just bark like Chihuahua

ARAM is usually a shorter gamemode, which means you would be able to farm them a lot easier.

Yesterday I had 40 minute long ARAM game. Those are pretty rare, but they happen. And even with that lenght we reeived alot less than 30 minute SR game. I wouldn't protest if ARAM would get half points of champion mastery per game. Feels fair for a "fun mode".

Also if you think you could use ARAM to farm S ranks, then I honestly don't know if you are troll or just very, very stupid.

It shouldn't. You must be picking up a tone that's not there.

Believe it or not, but the same thing applies to SR. You like to play certain champion alot.. What does it have with skill?

Exactly as I just said? Did you not pay attention to what I just said? Mastery has little point to begin with, putting it in ARAM would remove that little amount.

Same as above, no difference with SR whatsoever

Except that you can choose your champion.

That's what I ask. Or can't you read?

You don't seem to be any better than I in this regard.

Please take some medicine for that sore ass of yours..

Again, I don't see why you think I'm mad. I'm not even sure what I could be mad about. I was stating that, objectively, because of the nature of the gametype, that they couldn't base rewarding someone a chest on whether or not they did good with a character. ARAM is 90% luck.

From the start of this season players make threads that SR became 1sided bloodbath. Where most of games are steamrolled by 1 team. So please enlighten me, where's difference?

People make threads about a lot of things. How Swain is OP, how Riven should have another skin, how they should bring back AP Yi. Bringing up the fact that people make threads about something doesn't help your case. However, while that claim does have some merit to it right now due to how the season changes have caused snowballing to be a glaring issue, this can be fixed or changed. The same cannot be said for ARAM. You can't really balance ARAM. The very nature of the game mode prevents this.

Secondly, saying ARAM is easy is pretty ignorant bullshit to say. You try to act tough, but you just bark like Chihuahua

Ignorant? I mean, look at the gamemode. You have one lane, free XP and gold, and you don't even need to choose your own champion. Compared to SR or even Dominion, yeah, it really is easy. Who do you think populates the ARAM Queues? ARAM is a very casual mode and it's intended to be that way.

Look, the only one getting mad her is obviously you, for some reason. Why are you getting so defensive over this?

Yesterday I had 40 minute long ARAM game. Those are pretty rare, but they happen. And even with that length we received a lot less than 30 minute SR game. I wouldn't protest if ARAM would get half points of champion mastery per game. Feels fair for a "fun mode".

"ARAM is usually a shorter gamemode, which means you would be able to farm them a lot easier."

"ARAM is usually a shorter gamemode"

"ARAM is usually"

"usually"

Two strikes to my one so far. Who isn't reading whose messages?

Thanks for reading and don't try to reply. I simply won't read it.. The amount of dumbness from this post might have already infected my brain.

You getting butthurt and then playing the blame game just because I gave an opinion you didn't like makes you look bad, honestly. Basically, all I said was that Mastery makes ZERO sense in ARAM compared to its very little sense to begin with, and that if they decide to implement Hextech Crafting in ARAM, they cannot do so in the same way they do now, which is something you apparently agree with. There is no need to get so mad and to insult my intelligence, especially when I had to go through your post and correct more than a couple mistakes with your spelling. I could actually be mean if you want me to, it's not something I prefer to do, but I could certainly do so. But if you want to pull an Anita and ignore any opinion that isn't your own, then go ahead. I just don't understand why you managed to get so upset.
