I used to have 55% winrate in normal matches.

Now I have like 30%. Something is really wrong with MMR, it seems it wants me to have 50% total winrate.

I think they have resently changed how it works to make it faster, at the expense of having people of equal skill in every match

My games lately could hardly be called games. They're just one side (usually not mine) that just rofl stomps the other. The game is 99% predictable from the first few kills. I feel bad for my teammates because I'm always getting absolutely rocked in my lane (and it only takes a death or two for your lane to snowball out of control).

It's incredibly frustrating and I don't know what to blame. Damage, the champions, the runes the MMR? What? Why all of a sudden am I getting into this short piss ass games?

GayFluffyUnicorn4 votes

Every single game i'm playing 1v2 top while my jungler goes 1/10, midlane loses, bot loses. Even without jungle pressure my team gets somehow outclassed in every aspect xD Second game in a row where i take 4/5 turrets and 1-2 inhibs solo and somehow nothing can be done by my team. This matchmaking is literally only there to keep you playing nothing else. It makes you frustrated, then nets you some wins where i wouldnt even need to play to motivate you again and the shit starts all over again. I'm sayin it once again: Ask yourself why so many people on riot have a psychology degree, neuroscience and equal shit.

nothing is wrong with it.

the system works like this:

If you win = mmr goes slightly up. Win more than 50% and your MMR will slowly increase or rapidly increased based on how high your win pct is.

Eventually you will hit an MMR that you belong at or are not good enough to be at if you went on a lucky win streak at which point you are probably going to start losing because you are overmatched.

If you are winning 50% that's fine, its your skill level. You hit a plateau.

Now you just gotta work to get over that plateau. If you are only winning 30% chances are you went on a lucky streak and your mmr got a bit too high for your skill level. maybe you duo'd with a higher elo friend and won a few games, or maybe you just got carried a few times.

It happens, nothing to worry about. Eventually you will end up where you belong with a close to 50% win rate ^.^

that's how the system should work. It should give you and your opponent and equal chance to win based on your skill level. It just has adjustment periods too like any competitive system will.

Matchmaking search players to make team average mmr same as enemy team. If you win many games in a row your mmr is higher than mmr range for that certain division(yes there is range of mmr for divisions thats why skipping divisions exists), so to make up for that and make average mmr still in range to match with enemy team average mmr you get players with mmr of lower range value which means, they are worse than enemies with mmr in the middle of that range. Unfortunately for matchmaking both teams average mmr are equal so it tginks its alright. Thats where the feeling that you get bad players after winning a lot comes from. It is not a feeling it is a fact. You literally get lower mmr players than usual to make up for average mmr due to your mmr being really high.

Charlie Loves U2 votes

I have never experienced what you are saying. On my account on LAN that i got to D4 I skipped divisions and both teams had equal skill level players. If my MMR was plat 2 for example even though I was plat 5 at the time then my team was mostly plat 3/2 and the enemy was mostly plat 2/3.

It has always in my experience just paired you on both sides with players of similar skill level. if there is ever a much lower ranked player on your team either their mmr is high (likely smurfing) or the enemy team has an equally bad player. It is always balanced.

T4underbolt3 votes

Wow. Congratz you were lucky. Now go tell matchmaking is balanced to millions of players who experienced the same thing i described. Plus even today my mathes prove that what i say is true. Hard stuck people going 0/10 in 15 mi utes and keeping 1v5, flaming, tilting after 1 death just right after 8 games winning streak that put me from plat 5 0 lp to plat 4 20 lp. I actually manage to win some of these games but it doesnt change the fact this pattern repeats itself. And while riot lies to players faces that matchmaking is fair and doesnt try to fore 50% wi rate other companies admit matchmaking working like that in their games and the exact thing happens there as in lol. So no. Matchmaking isnt fair nor balance and is based on average mmr which fks you over as you win too much.

I'm gold 3 and I agree with the fact that MMR seems a bit fucky lately. I didn't go on any lucky win streak or anything, just all of a sudden games started being total stomp fests.

Either my team wins by crazy amounts or the enemy does. Nothing in between.

Lately, its been the enemy. I can't tell you how many games I've had in the past week or two that have been more deaths on my team than minutes in the game.

As a support and jungle player, I feel like I never even get a chance to be relevant. By the time I'm done with my first clear, its already 1-0, 2-0, sometimes 3-0. Then I try to make an impact and while I can help one lane come back, the other two feed relentlessly. I can't be everywhere at once, and I'm not even sure what I can do about it.

Before I know it its 15 minutes in and the enemy has 22 kills. At that point they're crawling all over my jungle and I can't gank anywhere because everyone's too fed, so as the jungler its GG for me, and I can only hope one of my laners starts carrying.

Also it’s preseason and less people give a fuck about even trying from behind.

They’re like “why fucking gruel and struggle for 30min for a CHANCE at a comeback when I can just go to the next one”.

This doubles over in normals.

TeCoolMage1 votes

This pretty much.

Boards usually does this:

The boards user loses early game Team gives up (either including the boards user or they try their hardest but no one else is) Game is lost Rinse and repeat Complains on boards about balance instead of player behavior

But really I've personally found the experience in terms of my own performance from behind the same as before purely because I play champions that can stall solo and don't die much. The enemy team still throws. It's not that hard to win silver games in preseason even if you feed early, at least not compared to mid season 7.

GayFluffyUnicorn6 votes

Because this simply isn't how it works and everyone with enough games knows this.

Velgam2 votes

See this is wrong on SO many levels, the issue is that in these games my MMR is increasing so I am supposed placed WITH and AGAINST higher players, the issue is that my teammates are braindead bots and the enemy team players are way better than what I get, you can't win a 1 v 4 and that's how my games are, the enemy always has the better player, be it jungler or adc. I main support and I get adcs that can't even cs properly. The MMR system works like this, the higher your MMR increases the better enemy team you get and worse teammates you get because Riot does not want you winning too much.

Who downvoted you? It's SO easy to see!

I just played my first two ARAM games on my smurf today (fresh MMR). First game, 20 second queue, and it was an ABSOLUTE stomp. 1 bot. And the second game? 8 freakin' minutes queue, 3 bots. (15 minutes total from a dodge) - I'm sure as heck not being matched, at great effort, with bots because I played badly. It was a jagged attempt by the system to generate a 50% winrate.

It takes a sharp upset to happen, but it does happen. I think it's a form of test- 'can you carry this?' (as a support, GOOD LUCK)

Support is notoriously hard to carry with when your teammates are disrespectful and uncooperative (a bastion of low elo) even if you get an adc that's worth feeding, there's a chance they'll just ignore you and facecheck a bush right before Baron. There's a reason the role's unpopular.

So let me get this straight here...

You think you were purposefully matched with bots in an attempt to force a loss because you won a game previously, on a fresh account, in ARAM?

I'm sorry but the logic there is pretty rough.

Firstly, we all know bots are banned in waves to prevent detection systems being discovered, so they could have been marked by riot. But what is infinitely more likely is the fact that fresh mmr is going to be where the most bots are. They are going to be fresh accounts matched with other fresh accounts. The fact that you think Riot is marking bots and matching them up with people to force wins/losses is pretty insane. Especially because bots don't exist as you climb the ladder why devise a system that only works at a specific place on the ladder?

Secondly, I know that the idea of the system working against you is comforting when climbing is difficult or a string of losses falls out of nowhere but seriously believing that riot would devise a plan to keep you from climbing? What do they have to gain from that? The system is called a "ladder" a reason. It conceptually is a ladder with every player occupying one rung along the way. If you move up you're one rung higher and somebody else is one rung lower because you passed them. The closest you can get to this is your personal mmr value. That quite literally is you're place on the ladder. Now your rank is a representation of your position on the ladder but it has a cushion. That cushion is your rank and your LP. LP has less deviation per game than mmr can, this is why if you are much much more skilled than your current division or league you can straight skip ranks because your mmr is SO MUCH HIGHER than where you currently stand. This raised mmr is gained through continuous win streaks and very high win percentages. It does happen and it isn't luck.

Thirdly, somebody stated that even at the top of the ladder the system will intentionally put you at worse and worse odds to force a 50% win rate. That idea is so asinine how would people like apdo/dopa be throwing up win percentages in the 70th percentile if that were accurate? Yes arguably the best player in the world or at the very least in contention for it and that is the point. If you're on top of the ladder you continuously crush your competition until a challenger arises that can match you.

Fourthly, the original ladder was a pure representation of your mmr AKA ELO. You rose and fell on the ladder based upon one value. There were no ranks divisions LP or whatever. This lack of cushion meant if you went on a loss streak you could infinitely free fall with no floor (Rank 5). You could also infinitely gain with no ceiling or cap (promo's). The cushions are here because people would stop playing and literally play one game at the maximum amount of time to prevent decay in order to preserve their rank on the ladder. This became unhealthy for the game and the cushions were put in place to make players feel safer playing ranked. The side effect of this is now the system is slightly more muddled to the uninitiated. People seriously believe the system is rigged against them when they are actually playing in "easy mode". The LP/Rank system prevents hardcore rubber banding while still giving highly skilled players ways to quickly rank up alternate accounts. A challenger smurf could win enough games in a row to start matching with diamonds at high gold/low plat before their rank finally caught up with them. You aren't being selected against, you're being outclassed/outlucked on matchmaking. Bad games happen and the strings of them stick in your mind much more easily than the good ones.

Player wins 7 games in a row "I'm hard carrying these games, I'm sick, hot damn!" Player loses 7 games in a row "The system is rigged, fuck riot, I'll never climb because they devised a system that won't let me, despite THOUSANDS before me doing it!"

NekoniClaws1 votes

No player deserves only good teammates, no the system isn't rigged. But it is intelligent, and it does create shortcuts for high skilled players to skip the ranks, and you can trigger that (tests). Usually it's with a stronger opponent but I see no reason to not force someone to carry, both are viable. Probably not what happened for me though:

System had three options for my smurf- (1) find a high skilled, low level opponent (hard), (2) drop me, someone who might be a 'fluke' into a gold game (obnoxious), (3) or give me weak teammates: ELSE my team MMR would flat out exceed the enemy team MMR. So 8 minute queue, ending up with the 'bad teammates' solution. It's an extreme example but it's just a mathmatical solution. It explains the long queue time.

I gotta' admit, I can't pay this much attention. Good players carry, bad players don't, sometimes you get tested, sometimes you get freebies after stupid lose streaks, most of the time the MMR system thinks you're in the right place and win/loss streaks are all chance.

I went on a winning streak (I was fed I'm all the games) quite a while back and was always at a 45-50% kp. Then idk what happened, I start seeing play and diamonds in my games and pretty much all my stats go down. Maybe if I lose more game I'll go back to playing with only silver/bronze. I even started playing aram because I don't want to Lane against more people with 800k points on their main when I first time a champ or something.

DuskDaUmbreon2 votes

The way the system is set up means you're going to have a 50% winrate eventually (unless you're the best of the best in your server, that is). As you win matches, your MMR goes up, meaning you get matched with higher skill opponents, meaning you're going to lose more matches. Unless, of course, there are no opponents better than you, or if you're the absolute worst of the worst (But, for that, you'd have to legitimately be worse at the game than actual troll are), in which case, you're going to have either above 50% or below 50% winrate, respectively.

It has nothing to do with Riot "fixing" the games to screw you over. It has to do with you just hitting a MMR that is higher than your skill.

Automated Riven6 votes

No, if your the best of the best the system will still force you into 50% by giving you worse and worse teammates to offset your super high MMR.

TeCoolMage1 votes

There's no way you can actually prove that unless you're top 10 in your region or have a friend who is.

Automated Riven1 votes

Its not about proof. Its about how the algorithm is supposed to work.

So I have a 2100 mmr, I am pared with two 2200 and two 2000 mmr players. The average on my team is 2100. So the matchmaking takes that average and matches me with a team that has around the same average. But that team could look like 1800/2400/2100/2100/2100 but because the two teams average is 2100 its considered a "balanced" match.

Now assuming that 2400 MMR is the rank 1 player right now. If he is so good that he climbs to 2900 and every other player is 500 mmr at least behind him, In order for the system to reach eaqualibrium it would have to make is teammates 500 elo combined below the opposing team. so the rank 1 with +500 mmr on everyone would have a team that looks like 2900/2000/1800/2000/2100 and the opposing team may have 2200/2000/2200/2100/2100

to the matchmaking this looks fair as its 2160 mmr on rank 1's team and 2400 on the other. But in reality that 1 winning lane against 2 losing and 1 even. assuming mmr accurately reflects skill. So at the end of the day yes. That is what the matchmaking system is supposed to do. It is intended to pair you with worse players if it cannot pair you against better ones.

Faceroll Tactics2 votes

That explains why most challengers are around 54% winrates, elo boosters can maintain 99% in most divisions, and Apdo can get to rank 1 on any server with 70%.

Dunning Krueger Syndrome

Automated Riven1 votes

To be fair I had a 59% winrate with riven over 417 games accourding to my end of year thing. And a 65% winrate with annie over 78 I think. And that was the vast majority of my games last season. so long story short matchmaking doesnt always work. That being said with the way matchmaking is supposed to work my comment is accurate. If challenger is 2400 mmr and you consistantly win games the game will simply have to average you with lower and lower mmr players to offset your high mmr to balance with the average against the other team. so if your say against 5 masters players and they average 2300 mmr, And your mmr is 2600 because you are so damn good, you /would/ be forced to have teamates who offset that extra 300 mmr. so they would have to be something like 2200/2200/2200/2300 to offset your really high mmr. Eventually the system (if its working correctly) will catch up and your teammates will have such a low mmr you will hit your 50% winrate.

This doesnt even speak to my consistant 60% winrate with riven over the last year. Unless I was winning on average like 25% with every other champion I played because easilly 2/3rds of the games I played were on riven and annie.

Personally I don't think it's an MMR thing.

I've played over 5,000 games as a solo que jungle main. The games where I get stuck with a 3 made or 4 made are always the worst; they tend not to cooperate / communicate with / trust me, and the enemy team will be far more coordinated and in sync than is usually in yolo que.

I've noticed that, since the announcement of the whole Clash system which is coming, there's been a huge spike in these games. It sadly seems that being put into premades of 3 / 4 people is now the norm for me, as opposed to an occasionally unfortunate happening.

Needless to say this has had a negative impact on my games as a whole.
