I used to think immobile champs were easy to play.

These champs Amumu Anivia Annie Ashe Chogath Darius DrMundo Elise Fiddlesticks Heimerdinger Illaoi Jhin Jinx Karma Karthus Kayle KogMaw Lulu Lux Morgana Nami Nasus Nunu Orianna Rammus Sion Sona Soraka TahmKench Taric Teemo TwistedFate Udyr Viktor Volibear Xerath Ziggs Zilean Zyra

But now every released champion gets some dash or gap closer, that palying those champions has become harder because obviously mobility>immobility. It's like what's summoner 4 for these days anyway if champs can just dash over the wall, or blink or whatever you want to call it.

Edit: But yeah mobility>immobility and now all these champs that are super mobile are also very bursty that playing any of the above champs stated that are squishy is a nightmare.

Edit 2:Veigar is a champ that I left out. But he should be in that list.

XDDDDDD forgot about him.

He probably has a bug that enables him to dash, so he's technically not immobile.

Mordekaiser Who's that?

M00ndanc39 votes

he isn't counting movespeed abilities he is only counting dashs/ blinks/ leaps because if so lulu and jhin wouldn't be up there either

because I don't count increased movement speed as mobility. If we start doing that then everyone is mobile because of summoner 6. Anyone that has a dash, goes through walls, or has some kind of gap closer I consider mobile. slows, stuns, roots, increased movement speed are not really mobility.

DeathBurst2 votes

Using ghost as an argument is not logical. Because if you would count Ghost for Movespeed, why aren't you currently counting Flash for Blinks?

And about counting Movespeed as mobility, I'd say it depends. Champs like Rammus or Hecarim definitely feels mobile to me. Champs like Teemo or Volibear, it's a little less clear.

Kaìju2 votes

Generally speaking, mobility refers to dashes and blinks, not move speed buffs. Skarner is immobile in that he runs at you in a straight line, but Lucian can dash over walls. Immobile champions have predictable movement options. Udyr is fast sure, but he still just walks. He can't suddenly shift positions, he has to walk there. Ezreal can blink around, but Volibear just runs at you.

LordGeovanni1 votes

If Udyr Kayle and Zillean arent immobile neither is Mordekaiser. They all have windowed moments of speed.

There's a certain irony to how some of the simpler champions are actually harder because you need to try and make their kits work against people with a bunch of flashy toys at their disposal. TFate's the epitome of this.

Doesnt TF have a targeted stun though?

Not that its impossible to counter by any means but it does help.

Try Ashe into any mobile champ, they dash right past your slow and ulti or straight through it in some cases.

twisted fate's least favorite opponent is yasuo, for instance

though twisted is having issues all of his own.

Ziggs can do four to five times twisted fate's damage with even more spammable spells and some mobility/zoning. The only thing he lacks is crowd control and TF's ultimate, which only add so much

Everyone and their pet who happens to have projectiles hates Yasuo, its not so much about mobility as it is windwall in that case.

Ziggs feels pretty easy to dodge and if he spams like an idiot he runs dry pretty quickly, targeted stun running towards you is much harder to deal with if you just missed something.

I find that you can usually just shove the wave into his face if Ziggs tries to poke and watch him burn even more mana trying to secure his minions.

Yes, but it's not great, given it's duration, travel speed and damage. It's really only used to secure kills for your other laners when you ult into their lane, or to deter an assassin from just running at you. (Even though they'll usually still just do that anyway.)

TF is one of the most simple midlane mages in the game, but because the only thing he does better than other midlaners is roaming, he's a very difficult champion to play well.

EDIT: why'd I get downvoted? Just pointing out that a roaming tool =/= a tool for fighting mobility

Yeah, but you phrased it like TF's stun was supposed to somehow be equal or better than mobility.

I understand why he is the way he is, and I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just stating why his stun isn't actually comparable to a dash, because it's use is meant for roaming.

Yeah, but you phrased it like TF's stun was supposed to somehow be equal or better than mobility.

What i meant is that it kinda hard shutdowns mobility, doesnt matter if you can dash 100 times in a row and dodge like its the matrix if the enemy throws down a targeted stun.

Makes it a lot harder for those who rely on mobility to deal with him generally......with the ever present exception of Yasuo of course, he counters everyone who has projectile CC.

On paper, yes, that is what it does.

However in practice, highmobility characters tend to be so far away from you by the time the gold card hits them that you can't hit them anymore because of how slow your Q is also.

Playing against a decent Zed or Leblanc means, yeah, you have a goldcard to stop their mobility, but they have tools to be too far away from you for you to retaliate.

I mean, sure, there are probably mobile champions that he can hard counter with his gold card, but none of them are in the midlane, so the only time you'd see said player is when one of you is fed. (Also, I can't think of any off the top of my head, lemme know if you've got any examples.)

Again, not saying it's bad, but like, in practice it's really not that great of a tool, other than yet another thing meant to help get your other laner's fed.

TFate's the epitome of this.

What a weird way to spell Velkoz

DuskDaUmbreon8 votes

While Udyr doesn't have a dash, I'd hardly call him immobile, given that his passive means that every ability of his is "run fast". And Zilean is also hardly immobile, as well, given that he has a 99% speed boost as a basic ability. Kayle also compensates for her low mobility by being a hypercarry while also a decent lanebully (Then again, that's only because she has a decent range against toplaners), and having a MS boost on her W that actually hits really good numbers late-game.

And, yes, Cho'gath is still ridiculously easy to play, because he's still a braindead champion. Same for Mundo. Their immobility is honestly fairly irrelevant.

And immobile champs tend to simply have better stats. Their base MS is usually far higher (Except for Ashe and Mordekaiser, but Ashe is an anti-mobility champion with her slow, and Morde's low base MS is one of his only weaknesses), and they usually also have higher defensive stats (or are more deadly when finally in range) than mobile ones.

I don't think you understand the point of mobility.

Camille is a bruiser. She's essentially a tankier assassin. She needs to be able to move quickly in the midst of a fight.

Kayn is an assassin. Every assassin has some form of mobility.

Pyke ^

Rakan is a normal support, but he has the playstyle of an assassin. Engage in, dash around, disengage. He deals no damage (unless you're AP Rakan mid, at which point you're an assassin anyway).

Now, let's look at all 2016 to 2018 champions.

Jhin: Only a slight MS buff during a reload.

Aurelion Sol: He has a single dash, which can only be activated upon hitting a certain amount of MS. Otherwise than that, it's not very reliable.

Taliyah: Her only mobility is another slight MS buff and her ultimate, which doesn't give her any more mobility than Ryze.

Ivern: His only single-target dash is designed mostly for allies to engage with.

Kled: He's another bruiser, who requires mobility in the heat of a fight.

Camille, fin.

Xayah/Rakan: Rakan has an assassin playstyle, whereas Xayah has nothing except a slight MS buff.

Kayn, fin.

Ornn: He has one dash on his E, which he has as his hardest-hitting CC when he hits terrain. Otherwise, he's fairly immobile.

Zoe: Like you said, her R forces her to go back. Until level 6, she's fairly immobile, like Kass.

Kai'Sa: Like Xayah, she has a MS buff, albeit a fairly large one. Her other mobility is a single long-range dash, which gives her a shield. Her playstyle, however, is like Vayne. She has to engage deep into enemy territory. Vayne's playstyle is also not dissimilar to an assassin.

Pyke, fin.

Four champions, two of which are assassins, the other two of which are bruisers.

4/12

1/3 of the champions have been mobile because they need to be mobile.

The other 2/3 are a mix of ADC and mages, with one tank and whatever the fuck Ivern is.

Mages and ADCs rarely have mobility, with the exceptions of Vayne/Kai'Sa, Ezreal, Kalista, Zoe, Ahri, etc.

There have been more champions without mobility than with in the past couple of years.

dome0256 votes

Anyone else having an issue with Amumu being on the list? I mean his Q is still a gapcloser/dash or am I wrong?

Automated Riven2 votes

I think in order to be conserved mobile you have to be able to control it far more. Amumu can only go towards an enemy. However a mobile champion is far more flexible. Or has blinks.

dome0251 votes

Well then a lot of champs need to be added to the list. Yasuo is going to be one of them according to your definition. Lee would also be immobile with your definition. Yasuo can only dash (E/R) to an enemy like Amumu and Lee can only dash to an enemy or a ward which is a little better but still quite restricted. Diana would also be on that list (dash only on R to an enemy). Kai´Sa too and so on and so on.

I think you might understand my point now.

Automated Riven2 votes

Well. I suppose to be fair the amount of dashes would also have to be considered. But leesin is considered mobile because of his ward hop and two separately targeted mobility spells. (one to enemies, one to allies) that creates a target agnostic sense of mobility. While also being to ground cast at the cost of a ward.

Yasuo and Diana /akali would be considered mobile because of how much the can move in combat. Not due to their unrestricted mobility.

However. That being said your correct. Their are more classifications of mobility then I previously mentioned. However amumu still won't really fit.

saltran3 votes

Amumu has a decent gab closer

saltran2 votes

I laugh every time ppl say that new adc players should play Ashe.

TheZacStreetBoys2 votes

Because you put in champs like Zilean and Teemo, I'm guessing you only count dashes and blinks. Judging by Illaoi, I'm guessing you only count abilities that can be used for escape.

So... Ziggs, with a dash with escape potential shouldn't be on this list IMO. Though good points overall.

FlameHalbrdOkido2 votes

what we need are more immobile champs with abilities that shut down mobility. or change some existing abilities to shut down mobility. If they are gonna keep saturating the game with flashy mobility, then they might as well increase the amount for those sweet mobility stopping outplays

we need more Poppy Poppy Ws, TaliyahTaliyah Es, Cassiopeia Cassiopia Ws, Camille Camille Rs, Veigar Veigar Es, Singed Singed Es, and Irelia Irelia Rs

What other champ abilities did i miss...or is that it? I know that mobility negation or mobility hindering abilities are a new thing for Riot but u can see how the number of mobility abilities FAR out number them, and generally grow with almost every new champ added, while there aren't enough to stop them.

Like make Taliyah Taliyah's wall impassible terrain to dashes, make Yorick Yorick's wall impassible terrain to dashes, make Mordekaiser Morde's Q Ground enemies for a short duration, make Viktor Viktor's W (or Augmented version) Ground targets within

Rathar Dashing2 votes

Really good idea on that Viktor W.

Bârd2 votes

A lot of them are.

It's almost like mobility and difficulty are different traits that are not necessarily linked.

Ionian Vulpix2 votes

It depends on the champion. Darius is not hard to play at all. Is he worse off than some champs with mobility? It depends.

Jackom12 votes

I think the most affected by this are Syndra , Viktor and Veigar, and it's reflected in their win rates . They can't really stun on demand, can't shield themselves properly (viktor's Q doesn't help much), and they're constantly exposed to both poke and all-in attempts. Sure they can burst hard and can capitalise on the enemy's bad positioning. If your opponent plays half decently, has a tank, or you just can't exploit some bad moves, you pretty much useless. Their damage is very strong, I won't deny that, but with all this movement buffs the other champions have, it's very hard for these guys to deal damage while not dieing in the process.

Am I the only one who thinks end game viktor has ridiculous mobility? He is one mage I never want to play against at 45 minutes in.

Metallikaiser3 votes

Not sure I would call it ridiculous, but yes, procing a solid speed boost every 3 seconds is pretty powerful, at max cdr Viktor is near constantly speed boosted.

EkyonKun1 votes

I don't expect many people to agree with my opinion on this, since it's never talked about, but I was always confused by the correlation of mobility and flash.

What I mean by this, is that flash has what, about 500 units in distance? So this somewhat low-medium range blink ability is so powerful that it deserves a 5 minute cooldown which is over double that of most ults in the game.

But at the same time, a pretty significant portion of champions get something very similar to this on a 20 second cooldown on a basic ability or less while usually dealing damage. You can say it has no cast time and is a blink, not a dash (so it isnt stopped by things like Veigar's cage) so it's better. But I still feel too many people are hopping around a bit too liberally.

It's been 2 years and I still don't fully understand it, I just kind of adapted.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else had wondered about this before.

Automated Riven2 votes

The most powerful part of flash is that it's an uninterruptable instant cast blink.

It would be garbage if it was a 500 unit dash with an animation and able to be cc'ed out of.

To argue that any other champion has the equivalent in their kit is rediculous. The closest would be shaco q and ezreal e. And even so the cast time on those is a huge difference.

Because he has no real gap closers. The second a Teemo is caught, he isn't getting away because teh passive bonus on W is out-of-combat only, and the active bonus isn't permanent nor does it refresh the passive; unlike an Ekko, who could ult away or E over walls.
