Zed is Riot's model for assassin balance. If they feel assassins need buffed, they look to Zed. If they need nerfed, they look to Zed.

ADC's abusing Zed's toys? Make those toys melee only!

Does Zed have too much sustain? Nerf the damage on BC!

Etc.

Riot needs to officially start using 'The Zed Bar' (named after the late top lane King Crocodile Dominus MaxQFistimus).

Honestly, Talon is the strongest AD assassin right now, I dunno where this Zed bitching is coming from or why it's happening.

I would assume because Talon feels more fair to play against. Even if he's stronger (that depends on win-rates and pick-rates), Talon is pretty limited in his range of impact while Zed can either flee or make plays from a further distance away.

When Talon outplays me mid, I feel like he earned it. When Zed presses R+E+Q+ignite and I either don't land my one CC spell or don't press my Zhonya's, I don't feel like I got outplayed. I feel like I got out-reflexed and really had no choice in the matter since he has 2 gap closers.

You actually bring up great and well thought out points, I feel like both are relatively fair to play against in the grand scheme of things, Zed has a linear skillshot that isn't too hard to dodge, though he does have more range, that much is true, whilst Talons W snapback delay is a big part of his counterplay, that and ccing him during his Q.

I feel like if I get full comboed by a Zed I got outplayed though, especially if I failed to land my cc or failed to use Zhonyas. I feel as if it were my fault for not recognising what he will do in the situation the lane is in.

Im gonna add my 2 cents. The key thing to take away is while Zed has the most "healthy" assassination pattern, his actual lane phase is and always has been unhealthy.

Because of him being an energy user and the way his W works, he essentially functions as a manaless long range AD Artillery mage with the potential to all in.

Talon feels more fair to play against in lane because unless Talon commits, he doesn't really accomplish anything since he has to get into auto range with Q to proc passive after landing both hits of his W, and every time he doesnt land his Ws , he gets closer and closer to OOM, meaning you are rewarded for not letting him land them.

Talon has to be proactive to reach success. Zed can just play like a manaless mage until he feels like being an assassin.

I certainly can't argue with how you feel, if Zed's laning pattern doesn't bother you.

For me, the issue is that in lane, Zed has a ton of options. He can farm passively (his passive and Q help him last-hit), or he can gap-close (potentially twice once he hits 6). He dictates the lane because he has 8 different ways to start a fight while the immobile mage has only one way to survive the fight--land your hard CC when he goes in. Zhonyas isn't generally affordable until the end of laning phase.

Brain Errör 4042 votes

Talon all ins and kills you level 2 after poking you down at level 1. To top it off, he can shove you in way safer and faster than a zed ever could... but I guess people just band wagon so hard, they use hyperbole rather than facts.

Kitten of Evil2 votes

I specifically said Talon may well be factually stronger, but he feels more fair to lane against than Zed.

Before level 6, Talon's engage is either: wait for jungler to gank and CC, or run up to you. He doesn't have a huge gap closer or a long-range poke skill (W travels slow enough and is narrow enough that you can usually avoid the second hit).

Flawless Fetus1 votes

How is talon more fair, though? Zed's burst is delayed and skillshot reliant. Talon jumps over 4 walls and instagibs. Lol.

Kitten of Evil1 votes

I'm talking about the laning experience. Yes, Talon's wall jump makes his ganks way more potent than Zed's, but when you're laning against him, he can't really use it to engage on you. His early-game engage pattern is either "get jungler help" or "walk up to you and you still didn't dodge his W."

Flawless Fetus1 votes

You're right, but Zed's laning phase is the same unless he wants to use his 20 second cd escape to poke. Lol.

I haven't dealt with a Zed in ~150 of my ranked games.

Being a mid main, and a mage main (Aniv, Lux) I kind of permaban him. All the time. Regardless of how good he is or not.

He's just pure unfun to play against, and it's not a balance problem. He feels balanced to play against - he's just not fun to play against. So many get out of jail free cards, his ability to all-in and zip out makes LeBlanc look bad.

Yeah... I just permaban him. When last season ended, Riot told me I banned Zed in 97.3% of my games. [slayer-pantheon-rainbows]

Oh fuck out of here with that bullshit. You'd say the exact same thing if Trundle or Kayle were in Zed's position. It doesn't matter who anyone mains. If their champion has been in the gutter for up to the past two years or so, and they're finally being buffed to the point they're useful again, ANYONE would say the exact same thing. I could main Leblanc and have said the same thing when she was reverted.

Yes, he was. After the initial Duskblade nerfs in 7.2, Zed dramatically dropped to around a 46-47% winrate for most of S7, being brought back up only when Duskblade was reworked. Then, he was utter trash again during Pre-S8 and the first few patches of S8. Riot decides to buff him, and everyone loses their shit.

Zed hasn't been viable for quite a while.

I don't know where you're getting your information from.

My information came from you.

He was viable in season 7 when duskblade was reworked.

Then viable since a few patches after pre-season. Do you know when pre season was?

He was viable for 7.1-7.2, and then whenever Duskblade was overtuned near the end of S7.

When Pre-Season 8 rolled in, and the runes and changes in Lethality hit, Zed was weaker than the Duskblade Rework Zed. When S8 fully got underway, Zed was in the worst state he'd ever been in, frankly speaking. Pre-Season 8 was from November 8th to January 16th, when S8 started. That's about two months or so.

Problem is Zed should have a shit late game because he has a very strong early. I'm sick of champions that give up hardly anything for any phase of the game. You have ADCS that are weak fine/strong early and then are dominate late. You have champions like vlad that are weak (LOL) early and then become a huge force as time goes on. Then you have champions that struggle early, are supposed to have a strong mid if they manage to get out of early ok, then are not so hot late. This game is more imbalanced then it's ever been and it starts with the shitty ass rune compensation they gave when they removed all the old runes.

Hmmm, I wonder why all the AP junglers are hot trash when you give every AD +9 base AD, + 9 base armor and + base damage on all abilities level 1, while AP get +14 hp level 1. Yet riot, either by being the most ignorant developers on the planet, or just blatant bias trying to appease the masses, keep wondering and talking about how they will fix ap junglers, without actually fixing the core issue. Nice job having them fight AD's over crab with their +14 hp Riot games.

All AD champions need to lose 9 flat AD with no compensation in order to start getting this game on the right track.

He was he was only strong when lethality was op for a short amount of time then they changed it, however for the majority of s7 he was trash one of the weakest mid laners along with ryze and azir in solo q. Assassins are not suppose to be weak in soloq.

But when you check any stat site for as many patches back as possible, never once does he ever hit below 49 win rate for an extended period of time. And he certainly doesn't hit below it any time recently

I got raped by several Kayles yesterday. At least Zed falls off lategame vs people that can buy at least 2 defensive items.

Btw, he was never weak - picking a teamcomp that counters him doesn't mean he is weak. His kit is already OP, because he is manaless and autowins lane vs mana users. It's not fair for a champ not to have weakness. If you think he is weak, you are biased.

He has been weak. Even against teamcomps he shouldn't have any issue with, Zed was in such a bad place in Season 7. His kit is OP? Hm. Yeah. A Q which has reduced damage for each enemy hit by it after the first, a W with a 22 second cooldown and a 1500 Missile Speed, and an melee-range AoE slow. His R has a .75 second untargetability period with another .5 seconds for the swap delay. His kit is also extremely telegraphed, and it's not difficult to play against. He's manaless because he expends his abilities in such a way that he needs to use up a lot of resource quickly while regaining it also quickly. If he had mana, he'd be literally useless all game. But I guess that's fine for players who don't wanna use their brains to think while playing against him, no?

He does not autowin lane against mana users. He might autowin lane against a paraplegic, or a Kassadin. Most of Zed's major counters are mana users.

The funny thing is that if Zed is strong then it means that better champs like talon are stronger, but they're never complained about.

Talon is easier to deal with, just speaking from personal experience. It seems like a range difference, but I'm still thinking about it.

The problem is that its mostly true. The only real option is to play passive and miss out on farm. Even slight missteps are punished instantly, and are too easily 100-0. This is part of a bigger problem though, where midlane mages have lost much of their agency if top or bot get shut down early. They just don't scale up fast enough for the pace of the game to be relevant in an assassin meta. As someone that spends most of their time mid, I increasingly feel like a passenger and less of a participant. Its especially worse over the last several months.

No. That's completely the opposite of what you need to do.

If you're playing Kassadin or Zoe, it's a death sentence for you. You might as well go help your Toplane or run it down 3 man Botlane.

If you're Annie, or Anivia, or Morgana, or Hell, even ASol, you NEED to play aggressively. Back off when Zed hits level 3, and either bait out his W with a JG gank or a well placed Anivia Q and you have 22 seconds of free reign over midlane. You have the tools to fuck Zed up effectively. That's what makes those champions counters against assassins in general.

As long as Zed can't roam, he can't get kills. As long as he can't get kills, he's behind.

Although I do agree that mid mages have lost part of their agency if top or bot get cucked, a lot of mages are meant to scale into late game. Veigar and Anivia are a couple that come to mind. Assassins are meant to be the ones who powerspike and become Hell mid game. Mages are meant to scale up into late game.

If the meta is shifting to an assassin one, adapt to it. There are a lot of good non-AD assassins out there right now. Leblanc, Ahri, Akali (before she gets reworked), Ekko, and Diana (I know she's a bruiser, but have you seen that burst!?), to name a few. Akali, Ekko, and Diana can all fuck up Zed pretty easily-- especially around lvl 6. The other two are more of skill matchups.

You don't NEED to play mages to try and have any impact on the game. Especially against a Zed or Talon, who, I do admit, does have more map pressure (due to being able to roam faster) than a lot of mages. Once this assassin meta is done with, and mages come back into relevancy, you can switch back to playing mages. It's simply adapting to whichever is most efficient. Sure, people can call you a "meta-slave", but is that really wrong? You'd simply be adapting to whichever method gives you more bang for your buck.
