Can Riot Put Some Effort Into Finally Fixing Death Recap?

Kivolan··101 votes·18,930 views

For as long as I've been playing League, the death recap has been downright broken. 90% of the time skills / damage is missing or the skills are labeled incorrectly.

Three times now over the fact few days I've just dropped dead with 100--200 HP left with no indication of what killed me on the death recap, since it didn't include any sort of burn / DoT effect like red buff or challenging smite. When the death recap isn't working correctly, it's difficult to identify if it's a bug or if I just didn't notice something happening in all the chaos... Which makes it difficult to learn from my mistakes or itemize better for the remainder of the game.

dont stress riot okay? they are busy with ignoring mordes 200+ bugs for years now. death recap, they have to ignore since league exists! thats not an easy job. after all riot cares a lot for their game and the playerbase. so ignoring that stuff is a hard job!

It's probably because they are fully reworking Morde and taking the time and effort into fixing all of his bugs would be a waste when his rework will just remove the bugs or if there are new bugs with Morde then they will be easier to fix since there more than likely won't be much of them. Honestly i'm tired of seeing Morde being brought up in threads like these when hes literally going to feel like a new champ lmao.

then remove him. disable him. "mecha kha yellow chroma skin has a small bug with his invis? DISABLE!" "morde has over 200 documented bugs? nah thats fine let him roam free"

i mean wtf is this shit?

Actually he doesn't even have close to 100 bugs or even 20. You rarely come across any actual bugs when playing him right now and that's even asking multiple people that play him all the time. This is just another case of circle jerking. Quit. Posting. About. Morde. Thanks. Come up with something new this time.

Cool dude you can link something from a long time ago. Like I said before they have fixed so many bugs there is literally no reason to keep bringing it up especially when hes going to be reworked. Honestly Morde is a dead champ and circle jerking him on the boards is pretty fucking sad ngl

Reworking morde? No no no Here's a list of known things -deleting aatrox and bringing in riven2 -buff irelia -akali getting reworked (because apparently being a snowball champ in the assassin category was lame so they want her to not need a snowball) -nunu rework -ignore morde -buff crit carries a bit... But not by making crit a better choice -small yasuo changes? -fizz and kassadin changes -bruiser items -more runes -skins

i have horrible screenshots how i assisted my own death, how i was killed in 0.07 sec by rengar with 3+ abilities and whatever bugs you can think of!

cmon rito, either show some math in that game or just put a sign "we're focused on 50% winrate, not on math"

That's not death recap. That's working as intended to show who the bonus gold goes to.

Not to mention how common it is for death recap to mislabel damage type/amount. It would also be nice to have a more comprehensive death recap (or at least have that as an option) that doesn't just show three spells from three characters, and for instance shows the physical and magical damage from mixed attacks seperately.

I remember the good old times where I was killed by leblanc_"some giberish" Despite not having a leblanc anywhere in the game. Or that time I was damaged by my own super minion etc. Good stuff riot.

Riot actually commented on this (I’m just here to relay what Riot said, not to debate. Don’t shoot the messenger):

Short version is the Death Recap system has some pretty large structural flaws that make it hard to incorporate new things and a pain to maintain. Last year, you might remember when we did a large pass on Death Recaps. We were able to make them more accurate (people were no longer “dying” to flash), but we hit an impasse: without rebuilding the entire system, death recaps would require significant, ongoing maintenance to stay accurate. We are already seeing the improvements we made then start to unravel. If we decide to focus on Death Recaps again, we would want to rebuild the entire foundation to correct its flawed structure. The reason we have not done this yet is because it would require shifting resources away from something else, and, as of right now, there are other things we are prioritizing. If Flash pops up as a thing that killed you (again), we may do some maintenance work.

Also, as to why they don’t just hire more people to fix it:

Hiring is a powerful tool in the developer toolbox, but it isn’t the best tool for every problem that comes along. For starters, hiring takes a very long time, especially for somewhere like Riot where we want to make really sure that any new Rioters are aligned to our company missions and values. If you want to spin up a new team to tackle a problem, and then you need to hire a lot to staff that team, my rule of thumb is to expect it to take 6-12 months (and sometimes much more) before that team is staffed. Second, just because you can hire more people doesn’t mean you should. Having more developers requires more overhead. It requires a larger office space. It means changing your company processes and developing a deeper (and typically slower) hierarchy. Growing too quickly can put a huge strain on a company’s culture as you struggle to get all the newcomers to understand the way you think about things. For example, Riot strives to measure what we work on in terms of gamer impact. But what that means can be really open to interpretation — it’s not something that is easily summed up in an employee handbook. Instead, it has to be learned by working alongside folks who already get it. The faster you grow, the more that ratio of folks who already get it gets diluted. More bodies just means that it requires more conversations to make sure all questions get answered. If you hire more junior folks, it means also hiring more senior folks who can manage them. I am a big believer that Dunbar’s Number is a thing, especially in an organization that eschews a conveyer-belt style development methodology and instead thrives when people collaborate quite a bit on gnarly problems with ambiguous solutions. You will almost never, in this business, find developers who love working on really large teams. Instead, they will all pine for the day when their dev team was 15 people because it’s just so much easier to stay in sync and to get shit done quickly when you’re small. I’m not offering some huge insight here — it’s the subject of tons of research into businesses and why they grow and how that often causes them to slow down. Third, just because you have more people doesn’t mean that the priorities of what you would work on would change. If we had six competent engineers magically appear, that doesn’t mean that the best allocation of those folks would be on some neglected feature of potentially marginal value. It may make more sense to bite off a larger project or to make sure some big problem got solved faster. How we prioritize features or work is a larger question (and this is a long answer already), but suffice to say that we greatly value player impact, and we do try to make room for smaller quality-of-life requests and meme-killing things alongside major reworks, such as Runes Reforged. Fourth, I should invoke the “mythical person month.” Throwing bodies at a problem isn’t a proven solution to make things happen faster. This gets into some of the points I already made above, but I just wanted to point out that business often acknowledge that more people isn’t the answer to everything. Related, you wouldn’t want to hire someone just for a three-month project and then fire them again. Some companies are fine with that approach (a lot of Hollywood still works that way), but Riot really wants to be a place staffed by lifers who want a long-term career here, not hired guns who jam out a project and then move on to the next gig.

Now, the question: what do you think they should renounce to do that?

And don't say stupid stuff like "lcs" or "marketing", those are different sections of the industry that have different relating numbers. What kind of projects that require hard coding they should refuse?

One of the rework pods? ( which mean, not a single rework, but every rework ever done by said pod) Or a new champion pod, new features like client, or clash, or..?

Mokuto Bunshi1 votes

It being a new feature its self it should go in the new features pipeline. Now with the fact that they pre-plan champions and features months ahead we woudln't notice a content dip for months until we got down the line to the new death recap its self. That would mean marketing would stay the same (how would a business man code death recap anyways :P) lcs would stay the same, reworks would stay the same, but we may see a dip in new stuff. But with so many people saying they are tired of so much change so rapidly I THINK we could handle a couple months of that.

Decrit1 votes

weeel, honestly? this seem to boil down as " just do it". which does not look very convincing.

Lol you're an idiot, I don't think this needs to be fixed at all. It has numerously helped me and my team identify cooldowns of champions. Just yesterday I was able to inform my team that Janna's silver bolts had damaged me, along with the dragon's Zephyr and stattik shiv.

Riot need to hire more staff if they are overwhelmed. Even it's short term. There's literally no reason why a company that makes hundreds of millions yearly, can't fix something that DIRECTLY affects gameplay.

Honestly, I don't know whether I want to have it fixed. The prospect of seeing the exact details of

If they fixed the death recap, they'd have to admit that damage is broken because everyone would have the fact that they die in less than a second spammed in their face 10 times a game.
