gp cant make FLASHYBIGLCSPLAYS like vayne and irel can so they remained untouched really its pretty simple

RiotRiot Scruffy79 votes

IMO GP makes some of the flashiest plays in LoL. Barrel chains ftw.

Also, the amount of flashy plays a champ makes is never a consideration for how we would nerf/buff them.

Ok, well do you happen to know why an immobile melee champ who's reliant on a delayed, disarmable skillshot and farming for long periods of time before being useful is getting nerfed?

Yosuke Apperu3 votes

Sounds like nasus! XD

RiotRiot Scruffy34 votes

I don't have the exact details (I don't work on the Live Balance team), but I imagine it's absed on their usual data informed methods. Most likely GP is showing up as very strong in the hands of a skilled and experienced player.

The goal isn't to balance for LCS, but rather the 99.999999% of players that are playing the normal game. So when we look at strength it's usually something like Diamond/Plat level skill. There are a lot of factors, but just clarifying some of how we judge champ strength.

Yosuke Apperu37 votes

I mean no disrespect Mr/Ms. Rioter person.. But 99.999999% of the players that are playing the game aren't Diamond/plat level skill.. It's fine to balance for them, but you can't fairly say hey we balance for a majority of the players when really you're balancing for one of the minorities.

OnanThaMan3 votes

well they are the ones who can use a champ to their fullest potential most of the time, even if i don't like it

Retillin4 votes

It's fine to balance for them. But don't do it and then say you don't. I think that was Sickxapples point.

RiotRiot Scruffy57 votes

This is absolutely true that diamond/plat doesnt represent the majority of players, no arguments from me on that. The reason that we aim to balance from diamond/plat over something like the real average (bronze) is because we hope that players, like us, buy into League as a game of skill that is balanced and fair at high level play.

Amen!

Seriously, if this game were balanced around low elo... shudders

All Day Tay Tay2 votes

teemo would do 0 damage, wards would be free, assassins are permabanned,

Delebru28 votes

Then why did you need to buff Lee Sin with the explanation that he s balanced on high elo but too weak for the average player when you say that you want the game to be balanced and fair at high level play?

Sohleks8 votes

Because he basically disappeared in high elo too in favor of easier to play champs. High elo =/= professional games. Most high elo players are just regular nerdy people, lol

Yosuke Apperu2 votes

The only problem I have with the way that the game is balanced is lets say someone on your team goes against a hyper carry per say.. So they gave that carry some kills.. but now they snow ball so hard (because that's what they do) That you can't stop them no matter how you attempt to shut them down. Which then keeps low elo players from getting to a higher elo. Like I said I know that they're called hyper carries for a reason, but not all of them have weak early games to abuse them so they sail to that hyper carry status and there's nothing you can do because someone fed them faster than you could ever hope to get fed. May I have an honest opinion? Whenever I queve up for ranked.. if i'm first pick I give it up to someone who says that they can only play X role.. so i give them X role and they almost always end up feeding like hell.. Do I just keep my role that I want if i'm first pick? I like being nice but it doesn't seem to work that way.. Sorry that I got way off topic by the way. Also thank you for your time!

doesn't Vayne outperform a lot of ADCs on average at higher levels of play?

personally i think she's very oppressive if she isn't outright stomped

Jasiwel2 votes

To be fair, there was a post recently where a Rioter talked about the potential for Vayne adjustments soon. I think the main reason for anything being slapped on PBE is due to the new Armor/HP/Tank items that recently rolled out this recent patch. I don't think they'll make a notable impact on her performance, but it's mostly Riot making sure they don't go overkill with changes I assume.

Two questions:

  1. Why isn't it ok to have a champion be very strong when executed exceptionally well? Especially one that has a lot of built in weaknesses and counters. Isn't that the point of the barrel mini-game? Being melee, and highly telegraphed, he's very reasonably countered by high mobility melee, or smart ranged play. A good example would be Morde ADC, incredibly strong when executed properly, with a good deal of weaknesses built in.

  2. Why not wait a little bit and see what happens as his opponent's experience levels rise as well. Compare the number of games a GP player has had with him vs the number of games an opponent has played against GP. When you immediately take power away, you don't allow him to be strong once people figure out their side of his mini-game and you have to re-buff him, and Riot never really reverts buffs for some reason, so you'll end up adding new power which will be untested and could skew things even further. It will always take longer for a GP opponent to get to the experience level as the GP player as they aren't guaranteed to have him in as many games as the player.

This isn't Ryze. His skilled play isn't completely shutting down the input from the other player. Rather his skilled play is mitigating his weaknesses while still presenting them as a point of attack for his opponent.

RiotRiot Scruffy24 votes
  1. It is actually VERY ok to have a champ be strong when exectued well. The actual "win rate" for balanced champs when played by a skilled and experienced player of that champ should be something like 53% not 50%. The issue is when you see that "experienced win rate" rise up to like 58%, then you can reasonably suspect the champ is op. As an aside, the data you see on sites like OP.GG or LolKing is average so it's hard to extrapolate from that to know a champs real power.

  2. I don't actually have a ton of specific context on what the reasoning and strategy is for the GP changes is this time. Either way, I'll probably ask them what the goals are and I trust they have a solid rational explanation. Most likely these changes are meant to be a small love tap type nerf for GP, he's not incredibly dominant I agree.

Saixos2 votes

What about the data found on champion.gg, where it also gives info on winrate depending on how many games the player has on record with the champion, etc. Can we estimate a champions power like the live balance team does with that?

Going by champion.gg, morde has an average winrate of 70% for players who have played 5-15 games with him. and beyond that he falls off-but that's mainly because of the patch being extremely recent and the graph takes data from previous patches as well. Wouldn't that mean Morde is actually far too strong at the moment?

LeeDark6 votes
  1. Really? Vayne has a play rate in the 30% range and sits comfortably above 50% win rate. That's not "a skilled and experienced player of that champ." In fact, if you just pick up Vayne for the first time, you can expect to have a higher than 50% win rate.

  2. I got nothing. GP is definitely too strong, sitting above 60% win rate for people who have played a lot of games with him.

Nagoh Shan9 votes

The issue is, all we have are Champion.gg, op.gg, and lolking to go by. Maybe a good idea, though time consuming, would be a short blog write up, that just explains the thinking behind balance adjustments, what you guys look at and for, and where it is that you feel things should fall if they are to be considered reasonable. Maybe show us some of the data you are using to make these decisions.

To be honest though, this one's hard for me to just accept that they have a good reason. I've wrecked as GP, I've been wrecked as GP, I've been wrecked by GP, and one of the things I've felt about him is that it always feels good. I don't feel like I just outstated someone, or got outstated (except for a match vs Kayle, but Kayle is nuts). Playing him feels like play vs outplay. Like there's something I could have done to make that go better in my favor or that they should have done to respond better.

And it's really hard to see that there's something we're missing in our statistics aggregation sites, mainly because when I look at GP in Master's Division, and he's got a 58.65% winrate with 104 games played, and he's 30th on the winrate list. Which is close to what you were saying, yet he's 30th overall. With gameplay like his, and the various winrates of multple champions, and the way it feels playing vs some champions, and rioter's own comments, threads like this and uncertainty in the thought process is obviously going to pop up. Eve #18 on winrate, 106 games played at 63.21% winrate, and I've heard very little QQ about her recently. People don't feel bad playing against her as much anymore. Leblanc #13 at 65.22% with 69 games played. People hate Leblanc, and it's a common theme that it's not terribly fun to play against her.

This is all we've got to go on, we don't get to know what you use to balance, and what metrics you use when tuning. And when you say that they're averages so it's hard to understand on our end, it gets even more confusing as to what information you guys go by if not for winrates and performance stat averages.

Can you see how people get confused an frustrated? With the information we have, it really does look, and has for a while, that new options become strong, while favored strong options are still strong, yet no longer the primary or only option. The new thing gets toned down and the favored champ remains advantaged. Approaches to strong champions and items are inconsistent, and often consistently inconsistent in the sense that if one champ or type of item is strong, not even out of spec that a predictable response will be made.

S4 Elise nerfed super hard while a wait and see approach was taken with Lee sin, Lee dominates the jungle until S5 jungle changes. S5 jungle and cinderhulk makes tanky junglers strong, tanky junglers, gromp, or cinderhulk itself see nerfs in every patch. Runeglaive enters, and powerful carry assassins become viable in jungle, runglaive and champ stats both nerfed, even though the champs weren't out of wack before item introduction. Devourer gets changed and ends up coming out with more base gold value in combat stats than warrior, with silly scaling mechanics, and instead of nerfing it like Cinderhulk/runeglaive, a wait and see approach is taken.

I fully believe that the balance team believes these are the correct decisions. I don't go so far as to think they have pet champs that they like, rather that they feel certain gameplay is healthier, and tend to try to promote that. However they communicate poorly, and often seem to make balance adjustments to protect players from having to adapt or learn, and it holds back the growth of the game. Metas end up super closed and predictable with certain champs seeing a lot of play and others being relegated to people who will make it work no matter how inefficient it is, all because they don't like certain types of mechanics or play patterns.

Interesting. Let's say, for the sake of the argument, that there are 100 LCS players (there actually are more if you count subs and such, but 100 is a nice and even number). If they were 1% of the player base, that'd mean there are 10k players in total. If 0.01%, there would be 1 million players. By your estimation, there are around 10 billion LoL players. That's quite impressive!

Haha don't read too much into it.

Could someone answer me that question: What exactly makes Vayne or Irelia not need a nerf as much as GP? GP is a melee champ that has to rely on a very delayed "skillshot" that is easily dodged or even destroyed if youre faster than him to do any reasonable damage. High risk, high reward if played correctly, thats how it should be. Meanwhile, as long as Vayne is good and she didnt die 5 times by min 15, she will 1v2 pretty much any bot lane by the time she gets blade. Apart from that she probably is the strongest late game champ in the game. And we all know Irelia is basically 0 risk, extremely high reward...

Transgressor1 votes

How can there be 10 billion LoL players on the planet when there are 5 friends drinking bear with me at the back yard?

Icestar11861 votes

You're drinking bear? How does that work, exactly?

Transgressor2 votes

Easy, hunt a bear, headlock it and start screaming to assert dominance. Once the beat accepts defeat, grab it from the head and start slamming it on the ground until it dies. At this point, you've turned into a full blown Viking, so you're granted the power to squeeze the juice out of bears with the power of Odin.

That or I'm an idiot who hasn't noticed a spelling mistake that's been there for a day.

Nah, I'm actually a Viking.

Because a 60% armor pen aoe from range that can crit, apply on-hits like spellblade, and does plenty of base damage on a low cd is REALLY powerful. Like too powerful... And all they're doing is lowering the armor pen % some... Get over it. He'll probably still be LCS material.

As someone who rode the GP train straight to Diamond

He's silly. His kit looks like it belongs it DotA. If you think 15% armor pen off his barrels is going to touch him, you're dead wrong. It doesn't effect his ability to fight 5000000 armor malphites, because he still has 1.2 scaling true damage and he still penetrates 45% of their armor, and he still clears creep waves with triforce and a single barrel up until the 20 minute mark if he gets NO other damage items. Backlines, AP mids and ADCs/Devourer Junglers are still going to die in two barrels, just as they did pre-nerf.

So how do you feel about the perception that mostly mobile champions are played in the LCS? That's not to say that all mobile champions are played, or that no immobile ones exist, but that's the perception.

RiotRiot Scruffy15 votes

Totally understand the worry that mobile champs are the only viable options in high level play (though this is definitely an overstatement). We've been putting a lot of focus on the non mobile fighters (see 5.16 juggernauts) and have been in the mindset that even though mobile champs are fun, we should be trying to find ways to make the non mobile ones compete with other strengths.

Sire Hippington8 votes

No offence, but what you guys did with garren and Darius was makeing them more vulnerable to mobile enemies than ever, and more punishing vs immobile.... Same for solo-kaiser, don't have enough botlane-morde experience to really judge him. Scarner is simply to overtuned to judge his power in specific cases, but going by my experience and his kitm he will be hard to deal with as immobile dude or melee, and easy to kite as mobile ranged, ranged+cc probably works good vs him aswell

Silents4294 votes

Alright, Calling this bull out, tell me what change specifically put Garen in a worse spot then before with his new changes? In regards to being more vulnerable to mobile enemies.

Dextix LT3 votes

Silence duration reduced, no more tenacity from w, speed bonus duration reduced. It makes him more vulnerable against mobile/cc enemies.

JAGMAG1 votes

the new items synergize really well with him so he had to have some preemptive nerfs combined with the new ult passive

Dextix LT4 votes

When you balance your champions over items, then something is wrong.

JAGMAG1 votes

how so? dead mans plate Titanic hydra warmogs are now all really good items on him they give him increased mobility, meaningful damage with health, and increased health regen. i haven't ran the numbers but you might even be able to build black cleaver and hydra and still hit the 3k health needed for warmogs and im sure you would be able to fit deadmans into that build. so with the new items he would be fairly strong and benefit from them more then most champs since they would turn him into a mega tank that can run at you much faster now and deal allot more damage.

Dextix LT3 votes

It is bad game balancing. It has a lot of problems. If you balance the champion over an item the following occur.

  1. You force the champion to build that certain item, because you nerf the champion over it. This makes different build paths discouraged.

  2. Since the champion is tied in with the item, any changes to the item will also highly affect the champion. FOr example there have been many cases when a champ gets nerfed over an item, then the item gets nerfed, but the champ stays nerfed, thus becoming next to unplyable (sejuani).
