A Runepage for Aatrox costs 3x as much IP as Aatrox does.
Not including the runepage itself, just the runes.
Why....

Everyone had to farm for IP. Eventually you'll have so much you won't have to worry about it. Most seasoned players have over 100k easily.
I've started just buying rune pages simply because I have nothing else I want to spent my IP on
Yeah but you can't buy more than 20 or something I think
Question: for us with 150k IP in excess, as you say, what can we spend our IP on? I got the 20 filled runepages, got the champs that I care to own for the time being...and am quite happy with my nick.
So what is left?
I consider buying some really niche runes just for the heck of it.
So what you're saying is that only seasoned players should have access to content?
Just something to think about...
"Runes are overpriced for everybody - therefore they are not overpriced"
???
because it's a free 2 play game, you either grind hard or pay big bucks.

It's not even grinding. It's saying "Win without runes and you get runes" basically. It's stupid.

You only need like 3 good rune pages to play 95% of the champions in the game.
also you need to put hours into the game to get the runes you want, I have all champions in the game and all rune pages with all the good runes and I grinded for all of it.
League and clash of clans have amazing free2play models that let you enjoy the entire extent of their game but you can speed up the progress for money but it's not necessary at all.

1 page : Attack speed, gp10, MR, armor. Decent on every champions.
Oh dear god
I did that for all of S3 and most of S4. Before that, I didn't even use rune pages. (>_>)
In fact if you want only two rune pages, the best you can go with is:
1 - 9x Armor Penetration, 9x Armor, 9x Magic Resistance, 3x Attack Damage (3690+918+918+1536)
2 - 9x Magic Penetration, 9x Armor, 9x Magic Resistance, 3x Ability Power (1845+0+0+1536)
That's a grand total of 10,443 IP for two sets of runes that are decent on every champion, just in case you are not willing to spend more IP than the strictly necessary into runes.
There is also 30 levels to get that, the bigger issue is if you want a page for Adc that adds another rune page at 6300 and ad marks+AS quints
In those 30 levels you also need champions.
Yeah, but you don't need all the champions. Now admittedly I'm much more in support of the difficulty between picking up champions and runes now than in like season 2 or season 3. W/ riot slowing down release there are more high IP champions in rotation so the "just buy champs under 3150 and a couple 3150/4800 champs that you really like" plan is weakened.
It may also be that I like some of the cheaper champs. I think there are only a couple of 6300 champs I really like (and a lot of them I wouldn't recommend to me if I was a beginner again because if you want to improve faster you should really learn the game in general before you pick up high mechanics champs). Admittedly I really like Maokai, Shen, Shyvana, and Heimerdinger who are 13,250 IP total, but I also really like some lower IP champs and would be fine starting ranked w/ out those champs or w/ only one of those 4. The minimum IP expended to buy enough champs to play ranked is 10,800, so only 1 champion (assuming it's a 450 champ) beyond the cost of building 2 rune pages. If you replace all 4 1350 champs to meet the minimum for ranked with 6300 champs you'd be at 30,600 IP or ~41,000 total to play ranked including rune pages.
Now I'm not sure what accurate numbers are for average IP earned by level 30 are, but a rather old forums post estimated 25-30k w/ no IP boosts levels 1-30, and an old reign of gaming article estimated 30-60, but they were discussing ranked on a budget for smurfing (back when runes for 2 pages cost more like 20K) so they may have factored it with IP boosts. Obviously this means that you have to buy on a budget, but I mean even getting 2 6300 champs, 2 3150 champs and the rest as cheap as you can then even a low estimate of IP earned by 30 is enough to have runes and a big enough champ pool to play ranked even with a few expensive champs. Now factor in that most new players play some normals at level 30 before going into ranked if they don't want to be bronze and there is definitely enough IP for champs and the basic 2 rune pages by 30, unless you are really insistent on playing mostly 3150 champs and higher, which isn't needed to be a winning player so it shouldn't be a huge worry.
What? The people struggling for basic runes are going to be against the same type of people who don't have full pages either.
They just slashed the most commonly used runes by half recently. It's a free to play game and people are increasingly demanding it somehow plays like a regular triple A game.

pretty much this.
people love to bash this game's free to play model when there are still free to play games with pvp that let you buy power
i mean, yeah, runes are grindy, but you're either spending the ip on runes or champions regardless so it's not like you're losing anything but time
My biggest problem with rune page prices is that they stifle build diversity. Once you get the basic ad/ap pages, until you've played a ton of league it is very discouraging to try things like cdr glyphs, hybrid pen, etc. due to prices.

CDR blues are best runes

You can't buy runes with RP what the fuck are you talking about?
You can buy IP boosts.
You can buy IP boosts.
Even then you still have to play the game to get the IP.

You can't actually buy runes with money though. Only more rune pages.

I don't think people who are writing these comments realize that IP boosts and spending RP on champions helps you get runes ridiculously fast.
You don't use the standard ad page??? What runes do people even use nowadays?
I agree, I only have 1 AD and 1 AP rune page and they run just fine. People are getting really weird runes, idk.
i got raped once against a flat ad quin, mark, seal, glyph tryndamere, he had like 100 ad at lvl 1
That's because that's all tryndamere needs.
Armor Pen and MR pen. At least, that's what I use. (>_>)
Comparatively how much is the Rune to champion cost IP ratio for Annie?
Annie has an RP cost?
kappa
No it doesn't.
Cost of Aatrox: No cost... he's crap so don't buy him. Cost of Runes for Aatrox: See above.
Look at that, I spent nothing.
Aatrox is a failed champion release as riot decided the week of his release that infinite sustain was a toxic champion design that is not fun to play against and is not healthy for the game. Aatrox is set for a full rework removing his obnoxious healing kit. To ensure he wasn't an issue in game he was nerfed into the floor and currently doesn't excel at any specific thing within the game. He brings nothing to a team and is not played by anyone who has decent knowledge of the game and his current stat.
TL:DR: He is underpowered because he should never have been released in his current state and is a shelved concept until being reworked.
First of all I definitely agree the rune system is a big issue. That being said, best way to reduce the severity of this problem is to get AR seals and MR/scaling MR glyphs. From there you can get AP/Mpen, AD/AS, or more AR as far as marks and quints go. Definitely not optimal but it's the best you can do for now. Doubt Riot will ever fix this.
yeah, i got 5 of my 6 pages with this setup...i only changed mr glyphs for flat ap on assasins , for adc 5 AS and some bruisers i put 4 cd
That applies to almost all champions if you're building customized rune pages.
even tho the rune system is flawed, its interesting and its cool to try new stuff and i even found runecombos almost nobody uses but which are simply much better than what people commonly use to basically i have an advantage from the beginning by being smarter. i like that
aatrox is simply: armor pen reds, 1 lifesteal quint, 2 attackspeed quints, scaling armor yellows, scaling mr blues.
I find that AD reds are better because of bloodprice's scaling and the fact that blades of torment scales off of AD but deals magic damage
his W scales much better on attackspeed than on AD and his total damage scales off of armor penetration about 10 times more than on AD. i mean i go scaling armor runes aswell so ofcourse if you fight on lvl 2, you will lose double but if you fight after lvl 6, you allready crush AD runes big time.
I tend more towards a skirmishing style in lane (and I am referring to laning instead of jungling), hit Blades and get off a Bloodprice procc then back off before the slow wears off
If you've been referring to jungling this whole time, then yes AS reds are better for jungling
"skirmishing style" in lane is simply not how the game works. its about either having the kit to be so strong early on that you can control the lane and deny the enemy like renekton can or that you can lane safely and farm until you get the items you need for your kit to become relevant. aatrox needs at least tiamat and then botrk to make use of his kit and until you have tiamat, you allready scale much better with armorpen etc.
Hang on.. did you say akali + rune page? :P 13,530 just for the hybrid pen marks and quints :P Btw just wondering what runes you're using for aatrox =]
Hybrid Pen Quints really do not outweigh the AP Quints imho since you need to start with something or you are relying entirely on bases almost for the first 15 minutes.
The best Nasus page ever™ costs 17220 IP. That's just the combined cost of AD marks, Armor seals, and CDR Glyphs + Quints. http://i.imgur.com/xT1nhqy.jpg.gif.png.bmp.jpg.jpeg
20% CDR Level 1 is so rude it is the best.
Because Riot "doesnt want its players to grind"
I own every champion, every rune page int heg ame. I randomly change my name because with well over 100k IP i have NOTHING to buy.
It sucks at first i guess but 2 pages will do you fine while you learn the game.
#Runes & Masteries mock every attempt at balance.
