"I know I'm going to get downvoted by X mains"

ModAcademy Kayn··234 votes·6,266 views

If you put that in your post, you lose all credibility in my eyes. Putting that in attacks the opposition, instead of trying to prove your point. You attack people who actually disagree with you, who aren't mains, by labeling them as something negative, and you're attacking those mains who are willing to have a discussion. You're saying that your argument is pretty much infallible, and the only reasons you're being downvoted is some asshole main who is too biased to see the truth.

Secondly, it makes your post of a possible discussion, into an attack on the opposing side. You label people's opinions and arguments obsolete by calling them a witch, and then trying to set them on fire. Not only are you killing discussion, you're also generalizing an entire group as insensible people, which isn't true.

It's like you're arguing that Left Twix is better than Right Twix, but instead of listing that Left Twix is better because it cascades it's caramel and bathes in chocolate, you're saying that Left Twix is better because Right Twix is too biased to agree with you. In actuality, you yourself are being more biased than the people you're trying to attack.

So stop it. Don't ruin your argument.

LINCOLN ABRAHAM LINCOLN WHIG/REPUBLICAN MAIN DETECTED NO TALK BACK

Anidan17 votes

Freaking Know-Nothing Party, man. Can't reason with them.

The difference between right and left:

Right does its research, left just tells them to shut up

Anidan22 votes

Wait, was this actual politics or a joke? This is like one of those things where if it's sarcasm then it's on such a high level that it rolls right back around to not looking like sarcasm anymore.

And if it is actual politics: I think you're comparing the crazies of one side to more normal people of the other, which is a bit disingenuous. I guarantee I could find people on any part of the political spectrum/graph and show you people that don't research and instead just shout at other sides that they're wrong.

But anyway, irrelevant to the original topic. Not sure how whig and know-nothing parties got roped into this considering both have been gone well over 100 years or so now.

Lincoln was Whig/Republican. Wikipedia said so and Wikipedia is never wrong, duh.

Back when the Democrats' goals were akin to today's Republicans', yes.

Wikipedia said so, so it must be right, duh.

Wikipedia is probably one of the most credible sources on the internet.

Oelyk1 votes

(Because anyone with some minimal effort can change things to be false as long as it looks slightly credible)

SoryInAdvance2 votes

Except no one does that and the info is constantly checked to see if it has been changed..its not easy to change information either.

TyrekGoldenspear14 votes

Yep, the process of how the Democrats and Republicans pretty much swapped ideologies is so fascinating.

I bet you used to be one of those kids would post that the swag acronym means "secretly we are gay" and thought yourself cultured because you listened to Aerosmith instead of Maroon 5.

AirKingNeo7 votes

That is really specific. Are you ok?

My point is that his comment reeks of someone who wants to be in the hipster crowd when he's only one step above the "basic bitch". I'm comparing his political stance to the musical equivalent.

Hmmmm... How many upvotes could I farm if I made a post titled "Popular opinion, but [unpopular opinion]"?

I don't know. He said it is the popular opinion, so it must be true!

Crap, he said popular opinion. I can't disagree or I'll get down voted by all the believers.

It's even worse that a lot of them think they're fighting against the circlejerk by calling people out.

I've honestly seen almost nothing constructive from posts saying stuff like this. If anything, I tend to see more actual discourse coming from the "biased" mains, considering they tend to know more about the strengths and weaknesses of their champion/role.

Ralanr5 votes

As biased as it is for me to say this, I would have to agree. Usually I see more discussion about the actual strengths and weaknesses of the class by their biased mains rather than the people calling them out.

It's honestly why I have trouble taking any post that calls out a specific class seriously. I mean it's like, "Do you even know what you're talking about and are you willing to be told otherwise?"

Usually it's "No".

Some of the best Yasuo nerf suggestions I heard came from Trinimmortal. It's almost like people who actually play a champion understand it enough to have a good idea of how changes would affect them. People who one-trick champions are some of the first people you should ask about that champion's balance, IMO, but the people who are the loudest about a champion being UP/OP are people who have less than 10 games on them.

3TWarrior1 votes

it's not exactly easy to get the champion when most of the complained about champions are the most expensive champions in the game and during the one or two week free phase there is almost no benefit to trying the champion in an actual competitive scenario and practicing forever to then have to purchase the champion to continue with the investment

I hated yasuo when I first played him because he was a champion with so much mechanical intensity that if you knew how to play him you could do anything provided you put enough effort into the execution.

champions like lee sin, vayne and yasuo as well as a few others may be "high skill" champs but when their plays are executed properly, champions such as this dictate the play of the game

that is the exact reason riot nerfed some of the most underplayed champions in the game and even reworked them into states that the players hate, but with so many champions, it's "okay" because they're popular

I can understand that the most irritating issue of yasuo is not changed because Wind Wall is core to his champion concept, but how do they change that to a "less toxic" state without having to add power into his kit, which is a problem in itself

say for instance his wind wall becomes a damaging spell...he's then going to have some of the best wave clear in his lane and additional income to an early-spiking champion

TotalJerk2 votes

Trinimmortal addressed the windwall. The duration is pointlessly long. He doesn't need it to be 3.75 seconds for what he's SUPPOSED to be using it for. Trim a couple seconds off it and it'll be a lot less frustrating to deal with without horrifically harming Yasuo players that use it skillfully.

You're right but after weeks of carefully studying the boards, its disgustingly obvious that ahri mains are active in great amounts on the boards downvoting and attacking every single thread which speaks of ahri negatively. Asking for more leblanc nerfs (really?) and dismissing the inevitable nerfs. It just takes away the credibility of all the boards and all the threads. Its like everything on the boards has to be in favor of mains of popular champions especially ahri.

ChaosThief4 votes

I can't tell if this is being sarcastic or serious...

Lauchmelder7 votes

Why should it be sarcastic? Up until this point I have seen only 2-3 Ahri mains that tried to have a reasonable discussion. I had to blacklist the rest of them just so I don't have to deal with their insane bias. When their only answer to you stating that Ahri is too strong in everything she can do is: "You're wrong because Ahri isn't the **best **at anything" you know they lack a serious eye for balance.

A generalist should never be the best at anything they do, they should be average at everything they do. Not stronger than average or even the best.

The Last Ballad6 votes

Why should it be sarcastic?

Because this is a post about not doing exactly what that person just did?

ModAcademy Kayn2 votes

That's very true, and I try to break that sterotype by making well thought out posts. However, there is still no excuse to go out of your way to add in the "X Main" to your argument. You're not adding in anything useful to the discussion, you're simply discrediting people who disagree with you by labeling them something they're not.

FastAsHeck2 votes

you're doing the exact thing the OP said not to do.

Melledoneus13 votes

Agreed. They call out specific people for no apparent reason, challenge them by undermining their credibility, then claim they "encourage discussion."

That's not encouraging discussion, you nit-wit, that's the textbook definition of using mob mentality to encourage hostility.

Glory ln Death8 votes

You're just an M&G upvote overlord, of course you'd agree with OP!

say X champion is broken , even if he is , you will get down votes because some people don't want nerfs because they want to abuse the X champion.

When Riot sees posts like "Zomg, Lee sin legit 0 counterplay remove his W remove his R gut this champ his Q shouldn't do damage i know Lee mains will downvote this!!! 999% play rate fk this guy", and it gets 100 upvotes they don't listen to it because believe it or not they know game balance better than the vast majority of players.

Like a bit exaggerated but these are legit the top posts these days, just spouting win rates and play rates calling for gutting a champ without any constructive feedback.

TyrekGoldenspear6 votes

Left Twix is better tho...

I agree with your main point. You gotta strengthen your argument with facts, not by attacking the other side.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Twix are best when Left Twix and Right Twix are eaten simultaneously. You get the best of both worlds.

On a more serious note, shouldn't it be Top and Bottom Twix? The writing on the wrapper is lengthwise.

Ralanr1 votes

Don't turn this petty argument into a full on war man.

Glory ln Death1 votes

I thrive on war, and I Glory ln Death!

ModAcademy Kayn3 votes

Right Twix is better because it flows caramel on cookie, and cloaks it in chocolate. Cascading it ruins everything Twix is about, and bathing the chocolate is an absolute disgust to the arts.

But a Left Twixer like you would never see the truth. /s

Lord Galvatron6 votes

Playing devils advocate here, but the mains of some champions are more.........closed minded then others.

Unfortunately a significant number of people on this board are susceptible to checking the number of upvotes and judging the post off of that and not the actually content (I know this because I tested it).

Even if the post is beautifully written and presents an well thought argument, most people will just blow it off of it has a few downvotes from a few irrational mains of X champion who didn't comment.

Not saying you argument isn't wrong, but there can be two sides of this argument.
