Why do some abilities not fuction against turrets while others do??

For instance Yorick Q doesnt work on turrets except for the auto reset, because "he would be too good at split pushing" meanwhile Camille can get off both Qs on the turret. Both with triforce procs and the extra damage.

They change when on-hit effects work on structures depending on if they want that champion to be extra-good at taking them.

It's usually the first thing they shave off as extra power when it comes to "narrowing down the champion's identity."

I haven't been able to enjoy Trundle since they removed his chomp on turrets [zombie-nunu-tears]

Shuyin1786 votes

You're not joking. I pretty much stopped playing him top lane after that. Sad times for trolls everywhere.

AmazoX1 votes

Why was that even removed, I barely remember anyone asking for nerfs in that part of his kit.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Because trundle is strange. XD

Jokes aside though, he is.

  • Scales off enemy stats
  • Steals health from dead things
  • Self-zoning kinda-diver.
  • Chunks turrets like a fed master Yi.
  • Pillar of Filth.
  • Debuff support.

Pro play as usual

He was being picked as a tank counter before, and in mid game he was a tower taking monster (in pro play), and so they knee-capped him, and have never gone back on any of it since then.

The joys of pro play. back handing champions for the rest of us since 20XX

Then we have ziggs w

Then we have ziggs w

its not even his W.. its his passive... the W is just icing...

Warlord Scrap1 votes

i was tryna be funny because jadeknight was saying w but you are correct

SzGamer2274 votes

Darius W is used on turrets. Renekton W is not.

Nasus is a tower eating monster with his Q.

It probably just has to do with how their power budget is spent, but I'd like a little consistency.

Xonra1 votes

I doubt Riot has actually put thought into it as far as power budget. I imagine it is just "This guy split pushes good in pro, better nerf that", which is why Darius and Nasus get away with it, as no one plays them pro. Trundle and Renekton however have been popular a lot in pro, so they can't.

Yorick on the other hand, Riot just doesn't know how to make him work, and I don't get why. Make him strong at split pushing, good. Then just make him worse at it than most other split pushers. Not so good.

Thing is though that they don't even have to think about it. If a champ can't use their auto attack reset to split push, that's a minor setback in their performance, and if that champion is balanced and has an auto attack reset that doesn't work against towers, then there's a slight compensation somewhere else in their kit that makes them balanced, regardless of whether anyone actually decided that "this champion shouldn't be able to hit towers with their aa reset so we'll make this stronger instead."

Sire Hippington1 votes

Yep, that'S one of the few things riot actually puts **some **though into. If renektons W was allowed vs towers, he's be absurd, he already always has lane priority and an easy time pushing people in, if he when could also delete towers as easily, shit would snowball even harder than it already does.

One could argue that Darius also is a lanebully, but not on the same level as renekton and unlike renekton he has no escapes, if he splipushes it's pretty easy to clopase on him, while renekton's double dash gives some decent escape potential. Also, there is a difference between 130% total ad and 150-225% with some flat damage on top.

Nasus has a rather weak laneingphase, unless he maxes E which when means less Q stacks so less tower damage, and like darius he lacks any mobillity to escape a collaps.

Handy Sandy 3 votes

Because that's how they were designed.

Wheatloaf2 votes

Yorick is already really good at splitpushing without his Q fully applying. Allowing it would be excessive.

Spoofghoul5 votes

is it really?

because splitpushing is all he is good for

Ralanr8 votes

I'd argue yes if his Maiden didn't auto die to turrets whenever you leave her to push.

Melledoneus1 votes

They really need to give her better resists.

Fondling Gems4 votes

Or just make turrets not prioritize her over minions unless she is dealing damage to champs.

Wheatloaf3 votes

It's important he doesn't cross the line between "really good at splitpushing" and "where did top lane go". Logically, since he can summon up to 5 extra things to hit and tank turrets with him, it's entirely possible he doesn't actually need the extra auto resets and sheen procs that letting his Q proc on turrets would give him.

Xonra1 votes

Not really.

He is one of the worst champions at split-pushing in the category of "split pushing champs". Unless you are brain-dead, he is easy to lane against, and while he isn't as item-dependent as old Yorick, it is still pretty bad.

While split pushing is is ONLY shtick, he isn't even in the top 50% of good split pushing champions.

I remember someone explaining this to be a while back.....

I think it was something like enhanced auto attacks VS on-hit effects or some such.

Vexed Hex1 votes

Abilities that are basic attack modifiers work on structures. Other abilities that are not basic attack modifiers will not work on towers.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

False. All instances of both basic attack modifiers and on-hit bonus damages are all case by case changed to deal damage to or not deal damage to towers by the balance team.

Vexed Hex1 votes

If what you are saying is true then the game would lack consistency and that is bad game design. I am not saying your wrong but if your right then it really is bad game design. It would be like living in one town where a green light means go and red stop like we know it and then go to the neighboring town and its revers. Red means go and green means stop. It causes a disconnect in fluidity and consistency on how the game is expected to act given certain circumstances.

OyddAWqJ5r1 votes

That's only if you view it as

All of X type attack deals/doesn't deal damage to towers

However if you think of it as

Champion A's AA mod can hit towers Champion B's AA mod can't hit towers Champion C's AA on-hit damage can hit towers

it makes more sense

Xonra1 votes

100% false

Trifroce procs work for Yorick too, it doesn't depend on the champion.

The rule of thumb is that most abilities don't work on towers. But for auto-attack enhancer it's a bit more complicated. Darius or Fiora or Malphite doesn't work. But Garen or Nasus do. And then you have cases like Jhin or Kled where their auto-attack enhancer has a special case to do something against turrets but not the same thing exactly as against minions.

Ariel the Cruel2 votes

Jhin's 4th shot applies 50% crit to towers. (>_>)

BenParadox1 votes

I believe that was to make up for his low AS and reload period.

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

His raw AD is supposed to make up for his low AS. Originally he applied the full crit by mistake. Riot lowered that when bug fixing so his crit-shot would still do more damage (%missing life damage still doesn't apply to structures).

Shuyin1781 votes

Champions that have the high ability to split push (like Yorick and Trundle) they prevent on-hits from working to help balance things around a bit more, that's why Jax's ult passive doesn't work on towers either. Auto-attack resets still occur mind you, but you just don't get the extra damage.

HarIe1 votes

I just wish it was more clear within ability descriptions whether or not an auto attack modifier can be expended on turrets.

Xonra1 votes

It's odd the way they decide.

Yorick is supposed to be good at split pushing (he isn't really good at anything right now, if we can be honest), but his Q doesn't smack towers. Same way they made it so Trundle's bite doesn't damage turrets anymore. Yet I can smack turrets with Illaoi's ability, and so on.

It seems a bit odd to not give the abilities...well the ability to damage towers, when other champs can and then end up being better at split pushing/taking towers than champions supposedly designed to do so (like Yorick, who is really in an awkward place right now of being worse than everyone else at the things he is supposed to be "unique" at).

Nickfer25101 votes

Yeah, I agree there is some miscommunication on Riot's part regarding this issue. There needs to be consistency with abilities that affect AA, or at the very least be specified in the abilities' description if it affects structures or not.
