Stop making tank items cheaper but reducing their stats

DeusVult··163 votes·4,372 views

It makes it so that late game, you dont have the itemization to deal with ADCs and actually feel tanky, because every item is made for mid/early game and there are barely any late game LARGE, EXPENSIVE tank items left in the game.

ADCs and mages have items that cost 3000+ gold, tanks are lucky to spend 2800 on an item. Its happened since the Tank rework and its gotten worse every patch.

Tank is straight up weaker in every aspect, with less resistance in all the items, as well as for god know why buff to every adc item.

I think the only exception to this is darius, who can build full tank and still erase half your team

Not only that, tanks are weaker midgame than they were before 7.9. Before, you can actually be able to tank and lock down a fed adc from 20-30 minutes. Now, when I play tank I find myself getting shredded by 2.5 item adcs at 25 minutes.

There's kinda 2 problems with that though.

For starter's Bolstering the final cost of big ticket item, will make it more difficult for tanks to build more proactively. This is less of a problem for glass cannons, because they usually only have one damage source. Tank classes on the other hand, would need to respond to the changing battle field. (Is it the ADC or APC who's fed?)

Secondly, the Glass cannon DPS, is pretty much the only champ who's capable of dealing with the tank when final builds role out. Given that the ADC is pretty vulnerable to everyone else, They have to retain their trump card against tanks. But even if they got completely out of control. (especially in a multi ADC meta) You still have specific items to help counter them. (Randuin's, Frozen Heart, Thornmail)

Second point is wrong, most mages have Voidstaff and enough CDR to kite a tank.

And? It's not like they're bursting them.

Erh...

Maybe not bursting, but definitely chunking.

Votable Jester2 votes

Maybe with a full glass cannon build, but the tank can chunk them just as effectively then.

Plus mages have cds, so any spells spent on the tank aren't hitting the backline.

3TWarrior4 votes

Anivia , Brand , KogMaw (if a mage or otherwise), Ryze , Swain , TwistedFate , Veigar , Velkoz , Viktor , Xerath

none of these mages have any problems hitting the back line and the front line at the same time

aceknighthigh1 votes

And none of those mages should be kiting a semi-competent tanks with the exception of Ryze, TF, and maybe Veigar or Vik(both have a large part of their ability to kite tied into spells on longish cds)

If you are getting kited by Xerath or Vel then it's time to hang it up, because that is player problem, not a champion inherent issue. Mages need peel to keep tanks off of them, and they will struggle to deal damage unless fullbuild(and even then it takes multiple rotations with down time due to cd's)

Baron of Bread1 votes

Anivia has a large area slow field, a stun, and a wall that she can use to kite. She can kite well enough to get away but probably not enough to really want to try kiting across an entire map.

Brand has no problems kiting. If (and he probably does) he builds a Rylai's he has no trouble and can watch the tank burn to death the whole way.

Swain is in a similar situation to Brand, he can just keep walking so long as his mana holds out. He might not even need to use his ultimate for extended periods of time.

Viktor can definitely kite, he has a speed boost on his Q. Hand him a Rylai's and job done.

Vel'Koz has a strong slow on his Q and a knockback/up on his E. Combine that with no cast time on his W and he doesn't have much trouble. Pretty strong self peel is one of Vel's strengths, along with tank shredding with his true damage.

aceknighthigh1 votes

Anivia you are right about, the rest no so much.

Vik's speed boost is worthless compared to the mobility some tanks have, which is why I was looking more at his ult as his main, reliable kiting tool.

Brand has one rotation of abilities and then he gets caught, not to mention the how prevalent spell shields are, and that his stun is a slower skillshot. No way in hell he kites a tank with any mobility or cc.

Swain can kite, once he get's Rylais, but only to a degree, and of course he usually builds tankier rather than full ap.

Vel's q is a easily dodged skill shot, as is his knockback and his true damage is flat meaning it doesn't do much to counter high health tanks unless he procs it a shit ton with his ult(which means he's rooted, catchable, and likely dead if he doesn't get the kill)

I'm sorry, but holding up immobile champs and pointing out that they do in fact have a few forms of cc, doesn't mean they automatically become some kiting gods.

Things like Mao's huge snare, and his point and click dash, Zac's long range knockup, and Sej's dash, and multiple stuns kinda make those item dependent skill shot slows look weak and unreliable. You may get zoned off by any one of these champs, but in doing so they present a pretty generous window to engage as all of their self peel is on cd or they lack much if any reliable self peel to begin with.

Baron of Bread1 votes

The range of Maokai and Sejuani's dashes are not so large that most of those mages don't outrange them significantly (Zac is all about that unparalleled engage range, no outranging that). Yes, they have their ults to make sure they can get onto targets, but that is what the likes of Sej, Maokai and Zac are supposed to do: force fights to start. If you want to keep them off your backliners then put someone in the way to eat that CC or slow them down.

Worth remembering: you can walk faster than a Maokai ult, Sej ult only stuns you on a direct hit, and Zac's E has a one second warning to avoid. Combine that with a popular new AP item called Banshee's Veil and you won't have trouble not getting caught (except maybe with Zac, getting over big distances is his thing).

Brand doesn't kite by throwing his entire kit at someone then walking away, he spreads out his spell usage to allow his passive to burn you as much as possible. That whole time you are slowed by Rylai's and he can potentially stun you as well, but he probably doesn't need to.

When Vik builds his Rylai's his main kiting tool against the likes of Sej or Mao would probably be his E or W, not his ult. The ult is good, yes, but his E has a short enough cooldown, applies the slow again after a delay for longer slowing and has no cast time so that it also works fine for this.

Swain has a slow on his Q and has a snare on his W. He has no issues kiting without Rylai's, go ahead and walk through his bird's laser field and into the snare.

Vel's Q isn't so easily dodged when you want to walk towards Vel. He shoots it straight at you, so you sidestep it and then he makes it split into you or makes you dodge backwards to avoid it. It doesn't need to hit to slow you down, if it makes you walk backwards than it is doing enough.

item 3165 item 3135 item 3089 boom enough damage to chunk a tank and enough CDR to kite.

Tanks can indeed chunk them, but tanks have a hard time near the non-battle mages.

item 3102 Now the tank's engage is weaker, tank probably deals less damage (most tanks are AP), and more CDR to kite. As well as being a very strong item normally.

item 3285 More for burst, but movespeed helps kite too. And lots of damage.

item 3116 Best kiting item in the game for mages, and health.

item 3151 Shred, health, and magic pen to fuck up squishies as well.

Champion Skin4 votes

Veigar can burst tanks... especially if those tanks are focusing on trying to survive against the enemy ADC and thus building mostly armor and HP (yeah the tank could build more MR but then they would likely be killed by the ADC?)

TeCoolMage3 votes

With a single MR item and the rest HP/armour, Veigar needs two combos to kill a tank given that he's not left unattended for 20 minutes to free farm.

LordGeovanni1 votes

No only taking 60-80%Of their hp in 1 rotation.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Please show me a Mage that isn't Veigar or Brand doing that to a Tank with a normal build.

LordGeovanni1 votes

Most mages can for few simple facts mages snow ball more easily than a tank and they farm more easily than a tank. And tanks can usually only spare 2 slots for magic resistance including Merc Treads boots

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Visage + Abyssal, Boots, and then 3 Armor items of your choice isn't enough Armor?

LordGeovanni1 votes

With that build you have just enough defense to get half of your health chunked from aoe damage while you are completely ignored because you arent a threat.

Sire Hippington9 votes

Problem 1 is easy to solve. Tanks lack a good powerfull option for raw maxhealth, and maxhealth works vs both magic and physical damage, leaving %damage as the intendet anti tank mechanic. Something like the good old S2 warmongs, over 3k costs, a stacking mechanic that prevents it from beeing overbearing as a rushed item but therefor tons of hp and incombat(!)-regen for mid-late. The midgame spikes of tanks mabye need some small nerfs then.

Problem 2 does not exist, tankiness is so low that prettymuch everyone but support and tank can easily take down tanks over some time(Yes, it's totally fine if killing a tank takes some solid time), If glasscannons are invloved, tanks simply get blasted prettymuch ever since S6, and that's not ok. And the anti adc items do shit, especially since many other classes are a threat for tanks aswell, especially if grouped up. A tank should not be afraid to be the first in the fray, but right now you need either imidiate followup, which usually requires high coordination which you don't have in soloQ, or you engage and just die on the spot come to lategame.

Big Lincoln10 votes

riot is nerfing tank items into the ground and compensating by giving them more obnoxious defense steroids for 'windows of power'

unfortunately this leaves bruisers in the dust

azrolator2 votes

This here. I used to do a lot of bruisers. They nerfed all the closing gap items. They added tons of steroids to adcs. They added tons of pen. They added true damage to every other champ. Months ago we were all bitching that hps items were either not enough of them or that items with them did not add enough. So now they nerf hps as well. The only true tankiness anymore comes from straight up hard aoe cc. So tanks are free to build damage/hps items and not be any worse off. Bruisers are left in the dust.

I mean, look at Garen. Him and his black cleaver and the other team are losing like 50 percent of their armor and these days seems like every ad just builds flat out pen and lw if there is someone stacking armor. It makes it feel crappy to try to build any tankiness against ad's since now you don't have armor or hps, And since that garen died 2 seconds after he hit the enemy team, it feels crappy for him too.

Now in addition to having a really bad late game, and a bad midgame, you get crap early game as well. When I get tanky champ without a lot of cc on ARAM, i usually just buy lots of hps items that aren't armor also and then pick up thornmail (nerfed not long ago) and tabai (just nerfed). Better than buying the hps/armor items.

Tanks feel more frail every patch since season 5; unfortunately riot won't gut offensive champions, nor are they likely to give defensive champions anything significant. It's a major part of why there's so littler strategic diversity left in the game. Why get a tank when a marksmen can survive longer thanks to lifesteal? Why play a tank when fighters have significant crowd control? Why play tanks that take time to scale up, and the game is over after a couple kills? Why play tanks that never get to stay durable, because riot repeatedly buffs damage? Riot has and continues to stalemate the game with their biased balancing.

Why play tanks that take time to scale up, and the game is over after a couple kills?

This ... literally goes with making tank items cheaper, meaning it takes less gold for them to scale up.

ZT Xperimentor1 votes

And the point, tanks don't feel durable anymore because they can't even get as many stats. Regardless if they were snowballing or not.

General Esdeath 7 votes

Because Riot believes the adc mains who cry "TANK META!" when a full AD Darius kills them with 5 stacks and ult

3TWarrior2 votes

or when they gave tremendous amounts of burst damage unnecessarily to tanks? like Malphite or Blitzcrank or Gangplank (though more a bruiser than tank), Gnar , Graves (I have no idea what he is now)

and those are the examples of champions without clear counterplay where they should NOT have guaranteed burst

GayFluffyUnicorn5 votes

GP a bruiser??? I mean you can build him "bruiserish" but that's still usually full offensive like DD/GA/sterak. GP is an AD mage basically. Graves a tank? What? I don't think you know what you are talking about or you are being sarcastic.

AngelNipata5 votes

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't offense supposed to outscale defense. I agree with you that tank items shouldn't become cheaper by losing stats, but I have some opposition to the idea of making a large and expensive late game tank item because either items like last whisper and void staff will end up making it much worse or it would become an overbearing item.

DeusVult14 votes

Offense does outscale defense, its just supposed to take 35+ minutes before that really starts to happen

Defense scales as Health x Armor (or MR).

Offense scales as (AD x AS) x (Crit chance + Crit damage) + Armor pen/shred/ignore

Offense will always outscale defense, it's just that it doenst feel good to be full tank late game anymore, as there are no 3000+ gold tank items that provide 3000 or more gold worth of stats. Meanwhile AD and AP have several "large" items to make them feel powerful, Riot keeps changing tank items to be cheaper, but provide less stats

TEA Nietzsche 1 votes
3TWarrior7 votes

which started when riot unnecessarily reworked the mastery system and pushed every AD champion over the edge and made the AD counters get nerfed for winning all the time XD

TEA Nietzsche 1 votes

What mastery rework are you referring to, S6 start?

3TWarrior3 votes

yep...that's basically the point in time where all of this chaos started happening unless you consider off-cases previously.

A personal favorite of mine was Twisted Fate in season five: his utility is too strong in coordinated play? solution: let's nerf his base damage and ratios even though he already had one of the lowest damaging kits

they probably could have added time to his ultimate or something and gotten better results XD though I would hate that, but then again, I hate any change they make to the unpopular and interesting champions that I tend to end up playing

then with the masteries change...my personal favorite was swain: so YASUO is pick or ban and swain hard-stomps yasuo and decently deals with all of the other AD-carries that were running rampant, but Swain was the problem?

Durzaka5 votes

Tanks real problem is there are no good rush items anymore.

There are no single item power spikes for tanks anymore, and so it fills like shit to build tank items in the early game.

So they keep trying to reduce the cost of items so tanks can reach their spikes earlier, but it isnt the right solution to the problem.

DeusVult3 votes

Ya cause they felt that item 3068 was too general for tanks.

Yet ADC have item 3153 have item 3142 mages haveitem 3165 and bruisers have item 3078

Autrah Fang4 votes

maybe if it's enough of a problem, they make it so the tank stats on the items scale with level? then Riot will have their way with tanks getting their items earlier, and the players will have their way by being tankier mid-late game?

TheSingularity2 votes

Late game issue is more about juggs, burst mages and assassins shreading tanks. Marksman are allowed to devour us and use is as health packs later on. That's their job. But when a tank can't do his own job against the champs he's meant to counter. Then we have a problem.

Big Lincoln2 votes

tanks aren't meant to counter juggernauts

ZerglingOne4 votes

As an ADC main I have noticed that armor pen is no longer strictly necessary, nor would I even suggest it in most cases. Not when you can get 3 crit items, a item 3026 and still have 400+ AD. Now exceptions exist like a full armor Malphite against an all AD team

Since it's only bonus armor you're concerned about with the main % arpen items, there's no point to buying them really without a major healer opposing you. Not when you can push your raw DPS through the roof with another crit item.

I don't think tank items are in a bad spot necessarily, but there is too much damn damage in the game right now.

Oriyoki3 votes

Tanks aren't tanky anyways late game.. Meta AD champions burst them in few seconds.

I view it from another perspective. You can buy your items earlier because they are cheaper and since you have extra gold later you can buy some crit items or something else you like so you also do some damage. For example: I build TahmKench tanky and then get for 6th itemitem 3031 and now I can tank and rekk.

Maybe in matches where the ADC gets into melee range and builds AP items but anywhere else you'll never be truly tanky and you'll never actually do damage.

IE is a terrible standalone offensive item on anyone let alone a tank...
