It's been officially two years since the Galio Rework

Galiö··3 votes·1,063 views

Going from a tank who played well into top and mid while synergizing with Tank Items into a Tank Support or AP mid with no real synergy with any items.

Going from the most fun champion (imo) to someone I get bored of playing after 6 minutes into a game.

From a dark Golem into a huge ivory Statue.

Can I get an F as a reply to this thread to pay respects to the old Galio?

Even if you prefer that goofy new big white guy, itll be appreciated.

Thank you.

I don't even know why old Galio got deleted like that, I mean he wasn't a bad champion because of the champion but rather because Riot just completely ignored him.

I think he just needed a mini rework like Xin to be good, oh well.

I do miss his shield though, was really unique and I hope it gets added into a kit somehwere at some point.

This is what happens when riot listens to to old players without thinking about how the champion works now. Old galio players wanted to galio to be ap mage instead of a tank so riot changed galio for them and look what happened.

Well I think that is what happened going by how many of the old galio players made post about it and the ap build as dying around that time too soo that is my guess but riot has not said anything about the WTF balancing they have done to galio.

There were some full AP Galio players who just pretty much cheesed the insane R ratio for one shots.

So get that they tried to give him some benefit for building AP...

But all the benefits he gets now is from health cause of his crazy Magic Shield or AP for his Q

His ult has low base dmg and ratio His E has ok base dmg and an ok ratio His passive has a good AP Ratio with an awful (bonus) MR ratio.

Not only is his kit completely different but so is playstyle and build pathes..

And that's all a separate issue from his visuals taking a 180

I do remember people early on saying about how Galio should be half mage-half tank and build AP. I hold the shifting of his power to reward AP builds more than his MR/tank builds was the starting point for his current issue. Heck, he now only has MR scaling on the damage reduction for W, but he’ll end up with more AP than he could ever get in bonus MR, so AP still wins out.

I fear this for Malphite, if he gets a rework, that they would listen to those that love to nuke with building him full AP for his 100% AP ratio/higher base ult. The stone golems should be tanks, not exploding people like assassins :/

I do like his current model and the idea behind his skills better, but I can understand the pain. F

Sad part is, right after the rework, he was a good tank. His MR scaling felt pretty good (seems like they have been trying to move away from stat conversion like it used to be. Think Vlad is the only one remaining?), and his anti-magic theme felt really good.

Personal opinion on his current state, it started going downhill when he started being too strong in waveclear on toplane without building damage, so they forced him to build AP, and then all his AP ratios got better. We started getting the more AP/MR hybrid. And then eventually the MR scaling and damage reduction removed from the ult, and we ended up with this weird champ that’s supposed to be a tank but needs to build AP like a Mage in order to do really anything. While the AP ratio on the damage reduction of his taunt is lower than the bonus MR ratio...AP is easier to build larger quantities of.

I wish he would go back to a proper Anti-magic tank, with appropriate MR scalings like Malphite with his Armor scalings.

To be fair, Galio was also reworked right before the Tank Class update.

Older Galio would have been even better during that update with the updated/buffed itemization.

Also I get dreams of when Runes reforged came out of the rolled out ULT CDR and Hextech Flash the next year. Feels real bad. Lol

Oh and yeah I think vlad is the only one left.

Extra edit: I like the model more too (not the design however :p)

But the new design is ok just completely different.

I did just relearn this, actually. After I posted and read some comments, I went back through the articles to find the discussions of his rework and saw that it was before the tank update, that and his announcment page still references Abyssal Scepter. Wasn’t he, as well as Sion, a big influence in how the Maokai, Sejuani, and Zac were adjusted, with more conditional tankiness and less immediate reliability but bigger impact?

Reading the notes, I can understand, given the state of the game, why they chose him, but I also don’t have the attachment that you did. I remember personally having more confusion about his gameplay pre-rework. “Am I a mage? Or a tank? Why are my main skills ranged damage but my ult seems to require Flash to get a good one in?”

Older Galio would have been even better during that update with the updated/buffed itemization.

That would’ve been interesting to see, especially Adaptive Helm.

Ahh, yes. Hextech flash would’ve been handy on him so his ult engages weren’t every 5 minutes.

Oh and yeah I think vlad is the only one left.

I wonder why they’ve been moving away from conversions. I don’t actually remember if they gave a set answer. My guess was getting two stats for the price of one? If Galio had enough MR scaling ratios, the transition probably wouldn’t have felt as bad there.

Extra edit: I like the model more too (not the design however :p)

But the new design is ok just completely different.

Going back through thise articles and reading about the nature of Gargoyles...I was like “oh, that theme change makes sense.” I honestly didn’t know, or at least forgot from my days in school (but I still know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell), that actual gargoyles were artistic “drain pipes.” A cool thing to learn, but can see why they thought it didn’t fit.

It is really jarring to see the difference between his old and new models. I can very much see the attachment to the old design, and how the new one hurts. I have a feeling a part of me will feel similar if Malphite ever gets his turn (as much as I want a better look, I might miss his old goofy look).

I’ll hope he can get adjustments soon, back to more of an actual tank. He probably would’ve been fine early in his rework if they took down his waveclear, especially early. I’ve seen you suggest he get the ability to heal on damage back (though I can kind of see how the Damage Reduction has a similar role. Did Bulwark ever outheal the damage dealt?). perhaps something at least worth PBE experimentation, like they have done with other recent changes, just to see how it feels.

RIP. He wasnt even a gargoyle so the fact that they explained gargoyles and used it as a defense towards his revisioning is BS

lol

Bulwark would sometimes out heal damage dealt, but you could have gotten morello or executioners for him. Also Galio used to get +90 armor/mr back then so it would be more balanced on him now without those stat sticks.

He may get tankier with the old on damage heal, but hed need spirit visage to do so, but that's better than having Galio just build full AP as a laner (imo).

Well, he wasn’t one in lore, but definitely in appearance, so i can see why they made that connection. There was also that old cartoon Gargoyles, so it still could’ve worked for him. Did it need to change? Not really. Could’ve left that general look as a “Fear him, mages!” Sort of vibe. But Do I understand their thought process? Yeah. He’s got some similar features, but yeah, there’s a disconnect between old and new.

Ahh, forgot about the bonus resists. Yeah, that’d factor in there as well. Makes sense then.

I would love an encouragement for him to build tank again over AP. He was healthier that way. Yeah, his rework kit design was that he could waveclear well, but he wasn’t gonna outright blow you up. It hurts seeing him as an LCS support building item 3401 straight into item 3107

Yeah itll be nice to have him choose to be tankier in exchange for less damage or vice versa

Instead of he does a million damage and happens to be innately tankier especially against magic damage.

Shameless self plug if you're interested lol:

And exactly how did old Galio synergize better with Tank items? His primary items were item 3027 item 3102 item 3116, and his kit was a hot mess in how it tried to work. He had no CC to speak of outside of his R, which meant that his actual capacity to tank was absolute garbage. Which means that tank items were completely useless on champion who could be largely ignored since he didn't have ways to force enemies to engage with him when his ult was unavailable.

New Galio has ACTUAL CC, and ways of getting into combat to properly disrupt enemy groups. His tank builds are actually relevant now because that armor and MR aren't just pretty numbers in his GUI, they actually serve their purpose of mitigating damage since he's going to be properly in the front lines now.

Doran Rings are not tank items.

AP items like Abyssal aren't tank items.

And you've yet to tell me how old Galio synergized with these items since he can be largely ignored in team fights since his ultimate was his ONLY FORM OF CC. Tank stats are worthless to you if you are not being attacked.

Galiö1 votes

You run up and press W. You peel by sitting near your team. No one can jump on cause your R was available.

When you did have flash maybe youd make a flash R play.

Old Galio had that mediocre MR to AP conversion (items offered less MR back then)

But he would get a heal boost from spirit visage, MR, and cooldown for his W and R.

Thronmail would synergize well cause you wanted people to hit you and you had a +90 armor stat stick attached to your W.

The double dorans covered your mana costs and helped with your clear and AP for more healing on his w until you got an item.

Oleandervine1 votes

Let's break it down:

{quoted}

You run up and press W. You peel by sitting near your team. No one can jump on cause your R was available.

The threat of your ultimate does not make you a tank. You are not peeling the enemy team if you are not CCing them. When you used R, you have used all of your CC. Without R, you are ignored. Unless you are using R, you are ignored. Pressing W did not make you a threat worth attacking (in fact, it deterred it, since people knew you would heal), nor does it necessitate that enemies should get rid of you so they can reach the backlines. If you are not worth attacking, or if enemies can largely ignore you and attack your back lines, you are not tanking. Your tank items are not synergizing with your kit if you are not being attacked. Hell, your own W isn't even doing anything if you're not being attacked.

When you did have flash maybe youd make a flash R play.

This is the only tactic Galio had to actually be a tank. He then had to pray he hit everyone, and then wouldn't get hit by CC.

Again, you were not a target worth attacking, and thus your Thornmail nor your W were doing anything relevant since you had no disruption or CC. You don't synergize with items that come into effect when you are being attacked if you have no reason to be attacked.

The double dorans covered your mana costs and helped with your clear and AP for more healing on his w until you got an item.

Again with the W. It's useless if you're not taking damage. And again, Doran rings aren't tank items.

So, as I've stated before, tell me HOW old Galio synergized with tank items when his only form of CC was his R. He had no CC and no disruption outside of R. If you are a so called "tank" and you cannot disrupt fights and draw focus, you cannot benefit from your tank items, and one skill in your entire kit that allows you to benefit from your tank items (which you are supposed to be building MR, btw, not armor, which those autos from the taunt would affect) does not qualify as synergy with tank items.

Galiö2 votes

I told you the way he synergize with tank items, the same way that Mundo is a juggernaut that synergizes with some tank items and tends to build all tank.

Galio, like mundo, was more of a bruiser but had one big CC ability. The game is healthier for having champions with larger windows of opportunity against a player/team.

I gave you the synergies, you just ignore them.

Was a nice convo.

Iota Theta2 votes

While that’s true that new Galio has CC and ways to disrupt the fight, my big issue with him currently is the path post-rework, where they made ways to encourage him to build more and more AP, while his tank build doesn’t get as much as it used to. He was an MR scaling tank like Malphite was with Armor, and now his only MR scaling is the Damage Reduction on W, and he gets better use out of full AP with that, since it’s easier to build AP over bonus MR.

I’d like that to shift back, and give his Damage reduction on the ult target scaling with MR so he’s more encouraged to build tank over AP. Right now, besides squishiness outside of W, he’s better with AP, and now he’s an Eye of the Aspect/Redemption support in pros.

Honestly I dont think his DR really matters on his ultimate in most situations (since the amount of time it provided DR was pretty negligable) it was just a decent use for him post rework when the ardent meta was around and everything was about peeling/buffing your marksmen.

It's just one of those abilities that is scarier than it looks.

It’s not a necessity, but I did at least like the idea of it, especially since the AoE doesn’t move with your target, and it helps guard while you channel to arrive. It’s a good ult for both protecting and as follow-up engage (as we see in proplay currently), so for a target that is trying to survive until the peel or follow-up but either can’t get out of doesn’t want out right away, it helps them stay alive until you show up. It’s kind of like the shield on Shen’s ult, though if Galio got the DR back it should have a less power than Shen’s shield, given the knockup. Having it scale with MR was a good tank encouragement though, but if they can find a better way, I’d accept it.

Its almost like when rito reworks a champ giving him tons of utility with 2 aoe CC's a single target CC and a semi global to join fights that he's gonna be so busted in coordinated play that you have to gut him.
