Why does everyone want to surrender? What happened to the culture?

Illabethe··4 votes·1,681 views

Okay. Title intended.

Every 1-2 days I see a new thread about 15 minute surrenders or even earlier surrenders. I KNOW WHY. But, I think it's worth making a counting thread to point this out:

  1. It's a major culture change to have most players feel Surrender (ignoring the flat out math that proves surrender is a worse option than playing a game out in any case less than 42 minutes) is an approved action and want more access to it. We need to figure out why this is happening.

2)** It's probably not good for the game in its current state, and either surrender needs to be taken out of the culture, OR the game's reward/LP systems need changed to accommodate it better**(Surrender almost guarantees a non-climbing atmosphere, so players who are not part of the surrender culture get dragged along for the ride)

That being said, we know EXACTLY why people want to surrender:

-Almost every Normals game is a matchup of 2 VERY high elo players versus 8 unsuspecting players of much lower talent level. Those 8 have accepted this norm and can generally conclude the outcome of a game as soon as the 2 high elo players reveal themselves. If they are on the other team, it's become natural for the 8 players just to cede the results and move on.

-Smurfs in low elo, as well as griefers in low elo, have achieved the result of getting this norm to cross over to ranked as well. Once a lead is presented, people give up because in their ~30 levels of Norms, they've already learned that a major leader is probably outside their skill level. Who can blame them, when in their ~ 180+ Norms games, about 70% of those games were controlled by a Zed/Katarina/Tristana smurf who went 25/0 in 20 minutes? They see a 6/0 in what's supposed to be an "equal skill" ranked game, they predict that 25/0 occurring there too.

I have not surrendered ONCE in over 9000+ games since Season 3. I have been surrendered ON. It feels disgusting every single time; We could come back, and in many cases I'm even still at a 6-7 KDA and ahead of most of the other team (even the so called "maybe" smurf). I do not like people losing my games on purpose..... just to move on.

We need to get this culture under control. Or it will eventually control the game entirely, and skill will no longer decide who ranks where.

Or the "culture" you keep pointing out is just you slathering a label above people not wanting to waste time. People don't want to waste time on games that are already lost or that they aren't enjoying. That's all there is to it. This happens because so many games already feel decided before the 20 minute mark.

You couldn't be more wrong about this. The "surrender culture" has only been a thing for the last 3-5 years. Before that, in every game; not just league, but every competitive and even non-competitive game.. this was frowned upon. Gaming culture as a whole has shifted a LOT in the last 5 or so years.

I remember playing Final Fantasy 11 from release until around 2011 and elitism was rampant and for good reason, to do your best you had to be the best. The culture was reflected in every other game, even league; where flaming bads... "Scrubbing bubbles" for people who were being used to mop the floor, losing lanes and losing games was all part of the learning experience and a barrier to casual players such as yourself that kept them from destroying the community.

Then riot cracked down on it because (read my name) and people like you flooded into the game from every direction. People used to take pride in come from behind wins, digging deep down, turtling to gain time and even out the gold spread before coming back after a team fight. Granted, Riot killed this part of the game by buffing the fuck out of snowballing and power creeping certain champs to near God status so that pro play games are "more exciting to watch" (despite the fact that fewer and fewer people watch the LCS every year no matter what Riot does because people generally don't want to watch a boring game that they can predict the end of by the first 5 minutes)

So no. You're wrong. There was a culture among the community and people like you have become the majority and killed it.

Pic related.

No it's not. OP mentioned the "math", and what they are referencing is another post on these boards a couple years ago that actually did all the computations and checked that surrendering is not actually saving time, even if you just have a few percent chance to win. Don't remember the exact figure, but it was something like, if you surrender when you have a 90% chance to lose, you're still not saving time.

When the game isn't fun, people want to surrender.

I think it often comes down to "I can't carry, thus I can't win" mindset.

when my team can't even participate in the game because they're all so bastard slow (or scared) to do anything. yeah i'm gonna ff, especially when my team shows me they are now too scared to play the fucking game. also gonna ff when

  1. allied team can't get kills.
  2. allied team demonstrates they don't know how exp works.
  3. allied team cannot get a drake if i've drawn lots of jungle attention from the enemy.
  4. pinging anything at all about anything to me when i'm being held hostage in some stupid game with a bunch of feeders who now want to be boosted.
  5. support pick is stupid.
  6. jungle pick is stupid.
  7. mid lane can't keep their opposite in lane EVER.
  8. jungle doesn't know how to path to achieve a gank.
  9. we're a full AD team.
  10. enemy is a full AD team.
  11. team was unable to see any enemy walking on ALL the wards.
  12. turbofeeding top lane with a teleport.

anyone not ff'ing when these situations arise is honestly trolling. ya'll trolling, and you don't wanna fix the matchmaking or make the jungle playable or fucking expand the definition of balance

Illabethe1 votes

5 & 6; Don't necessarily FF in those games. If I pick Morgana/Zyra/Karma jungle, you can damn well be sure I'm there to WIN. You may view them as stupid, but they do work, do carry, and stronger than most innate junglers (Karma is debateable; the other two are absolutely junglers!). If you're talking about Soraka jungle, I understand.

  1. Some mids are incapable of doing so. You shouldn't expect it. If it's Talon, he can go anywhere he wants on short notice. You shouldn't expect an immobile mid to follow. Instead you should have eyes peeled and get ready for him.

5-12 are arguably circumstances where people should NEVER FF. 1-4 are circumstances where even without the surrender, game will end soon. So play it out.

DaBooosh

What you mean is that you don't believe in yourself to carry. You will surrender if your team can't carry you.

You need to start understanding that the point of a game is not to win. If you want to climb, you're going to have to learn to play from behind, or with bad teammates.

no bro, i don't want to fucking carry scrubs who can't even keep pace with their opposite. i have better things to do with my time. far less stressful things too than trying to coordinate a bunch of feeders who aren't even trying to win (call it what it is) they just want to see how hard you can try carrying. if they can't be invested in the game from minute 00:00 why should i? i came to play league of legends they came to fuck around, i don't have time for that. and don't @ me with "you queued up for the game so you should have time" yeah i'll have time when people are actually taking the game seriously and aren't in it to waste peoples time. fantastic community which advocates for wasting peoples precious little time on this wet rock. it's not the game that's the problem it's the people, as per usual.

Düff McWhalen3 votes

This is going to sound bad but it more often than not works.

"Flame your team constructively"

One tried and true method when a game is winnable (they ALL are), but the team doesn't know it, simply /ff and say "You people don't want to win, gg". I've noticed a major uptick in comebacks since I started doing this.

Another thing I do is point at myself immediately before pointing at someone else so the point is better received. Example, I play diver champions like Shyvana and rely on my teams to follow up and get the kill. When they suck and don't follow up on an obvious double kill bot gank, I quickly go "MY fault, but next time come in with me so I can get you fed dude."

The other thing I'll do in All Chat is try to make my opposition cocky and overconfident. Play mind games. Everyone under Plat 4 likes to think they are a Diamond smurf and they just aren't. Cater to their ego and let them think they are in control and they start making mistakes, like not ending ASAP when you're team has a late game hyper carry/Nasus/Veigar or tank like a 6 stack Cho.

SOME OTHER BASIC THINGS YOU CAN DO WHILE WINNING OR LOSING TO IMPROVE YOUR GAMES ARE AS FOLLOWS;

-Counter build. If they have armor, build armor pen! If you're behind, build defensive or sustain and draw out the game. -GROUP. The team that groups constantly getting picks is the one that controls the objectives. If you're the one not grouping, then stop over extending until your team is ready. -WARD. This is completely self explanatory.... -RESET. After a successful push, that offensive team is vulnerable if they don't back off and regroup for a fresh push. People simply don't do this and it throws entire games. -LEARN TO END THE FUCKING GAME. If you have the chance, recognize it and just end! KDA does not matter, only that Nexus. It's the entire goal! You could be 2/10/7 and STILL getting LP because you played out the game and ended. Swear to god Bronze, Silver, Golds do NOT grasp this shit. Who would you rather play with? The 27/5/10 Zed that loses LP, or the former?

Saying "GG" and "You don't want to win" has systematically earned me 5 Perma bans over time. Both are part of what IFS tracks, and results eventually (about 200-300 games) in a flag for discipline.

Second thing is really hard for me personally; I generally play initiative junglers too, and it just stuns me when the lane I'm ganking just ..... disappears. I Ping ahead..... they act like they are ready to recieve a gank, and then once I've CC'd and initiated the gank...... they just peel off and make excuses as to why they left me to 1v2. It's really hard to say "My bad" when all their signals pointed to them working as a team.

(I don't need advice personally; I do have a D I account. I've just been playing a new account while this account (my real smurf) was on a 2 week ban, and after because of the risk of losing the smurf. While doing it, I got to experience sub level 30 again, as well as some norms. These games are so polarized it's no wonder people keep subscribing to surrenders. I can have 17k Gold and 3 people on my team have 6.5k. THAT DIFFERENT).

First, like your username, though I'm more of a Blaze Heatnix fan myself.

Second, bold and underline that last point please. League is not a Call of Duty free-for-all where getting the best KDA wins; if anything it's a king of the hill or capture the bag where having a good KDA just makes it easier.

Speaking from experience this season, I have lost a game after starting off 9/0, won games after going 0/3, and even managed to help a personally frustrating game drag out to 50 minutes because it was still possible for my team to win until a decisve ace and baron denied us any hope.

Don't get me wrong; there are valid reasons to surrender, like a player trolling with a poorly executed build or idea, or a player actually inting because they are so tilted. In both cases, the team in generally better off without those players, but that would still leave the team at a numbers disadvantage. Not to mention that since Leaverbuster got implemented, these players have an incentive themselves to surrender.

However, in both situations, a surrender is viable because of the players's reaction to a situation, not because of the situation itself.

it's funny how the asian regions accept that there are games that cannot be won and hence they've developed a culture that doesn't invest anymore energy into those games to avoid tilt and get onto the next one. but EUW and NA have no concept of time so yolo everyone gets their time wasted by jungle pyke who gets flame horizoned by his opposite at 10 minutes while he can't clear the jungle. /league

To be fair LoL in China and Korea is usually played in internet cafes where they pay by the hour.

Illabethe1 votes

? I've never once heard of Asian regions actually surrendering.

Your example also used to be extremely flawed. Pyke could clear fine. I haven't tried it since the aoe nerfs, but item 3077 after clear one should bring it back into viability. Was both a fast and effective clear.

I don't know how you have an opinion about China, since their play is secretive, and region locked, until it comes to Tournament play.

NA has no concept of time? We work more hours than anyone else in the world....

this pyke didn't take tiamat. this pyke was lvl 4 when his opposite reksai was lvl 8 and triple ganking the map. the reksai had double his cs for most of the damn game. and i'm not able to ff the game because THE PYKE thinks he's gonna do anything with his sniped kills and 40cs at 20 minutes. item 1412 item 3142 were more valuable to this guys already slow jungle clear than a item 3077 and his item 3400 never actually made up for it cause he couldn't execute anybody. so fun i'm ff'ing that game.

Good point. I often lament surrender culture, but I've never approached it from a standpoint of going to the source as to why it could be so prevalent. Good post!

This isn't season 5 when "never give up" culture was valid.

It's season 9 and there's way too much BS floating around out there that matches can be entirely one-sided if you don't get ahead early. This game now favors snowball champions. These are the problematic champions in the meta for Silver to Plat, which is where the majority of people are.

Support: Pyke Brand Yuumi

ADC: Sivir Kaisa

Mid: Diana

Jungle: Kayn Hecarim Udyr Vi JarvanIV

Top lane is so broken right now that listing champions seems kind of pointless. It's the nightmare lane. That's where Riot likes to stick the BS most of the time. And that creates another issue. Jungle pressure is essential up top, but that means the rest of the map can get neglected, creating more issues and putting people behind.

All of them have high ban rates and pick rates, but with only 5 bans some are bound to slip through the cracks and get picked.

We also still got our old stand bys that will start a snowball no matter the meta: LeeSin Yasuo Zed Katarina Ahri Tryndamere MasterYi

Bans used to be about who countered you, or who you had a bad time against. There were always a few champions that were broken due to reworks or items buffs etc, and it took Riot a patch or two to tone down generally speaking, but now we don't have enough bans to cover all of the snowball champions and it is only getting worse.

With each new rework and champion release Riot's design team is adding more damage, more mobility, more safety, and it's just hard to keep up, especially if your team has too many obsolete champions.

That's why you're experiencing more surrenders, and sometimes you should surrender instead of tilting everyone by making them stay in a match for 10-15 minutes because you did okay in your lane.

Illabethe1 votes

All of said situations/champion what ifs have always existed. They just used to be different champions (Poppy, Hybrid Evelynn, Udyr, etc)'

I don't know if you played back then but snowballs were FAR more overpowering and game influencing than now, unless someone of significant skill gap was playing it.

Back in Season 4 I literally beat a Masters tier Draven with Morgana in Gold. Both of us were 27 kill scores with less than 6 deaths. We just kept annihilating each others' team and each other on occasion.

I also once 36/0'd Udyr simply because the snowball never stopped then. Try to do that in the current Meta (Yes; Trick2G was relevant in season 4 too; people compared me to him, and it annoyed me[He can still pull off Udyr, and I can't])

There's the correct time to FF and bad ones.

Its pretty easy, Communicate with team. Get a consensus, can we pull this game off and what needs to happen. If you can do that then decent players will have a bit more confidence and your team can get more coordinated.

Bad players will spam FF, run off to split push mindlessly, and generally make a point to soft throw the game so they can get the I told you we cant win dumbasses.

That player has no desire to climb or awareness of what it takes. Nowadays a lot of folks take 1 lane losing = game is lost. Garbage viewpoint imo, 5 players per team and for some reason there's a attitude it requires everybody on your team to be the better player to win....

I mean I get it. If I was deadweight or low impact id probably have a similar view.... but id be self aware enough to realize its cuz I don't pull weight I have to rely on the other 4 dudes to all play better then the enemy.

Some games are better of /ff because MM is going to inherently make mismatches. Yes, many games that are /FF could have been won. The bigger issue is not about /FF but the attitudes behind it and behaviors. Not understanding teamwork = negative impact on the game. Throwing the game because you did not get your /ff and your 0-4-0 and wanna be a child about it is immature and the game would be better with out ya in it.

back when ppl played dota 1 Loading into game is 5-10minutes. No reconnect. This made it so loading into a game without a full party is quite common. People just played it out knowing the odds. Along with this there is also potential server split where your game will split into two with half players going into one and other half going into the second. Sometimes players will agree to stop here if the team gets too uneven thou some might play it out eg 1v4. This is possible because that one player will have a full build when the 4 players have 2-3 items. yes u can split push, n win but some ppl like to fight a raid boss. These players shaped league's player base in the earlier days. Today most of those players left and new players follow streamers, and what get clicks for streamers is 1v5 not fighting from behind. so..... surrender.

My time and enjoyment are far more important to me than an insignificant difference in IP per hour.

the thing is turrent plates made comeback hard as fuck, snowball/damage meta makes the games shorter, and if your down at 15 mins the chances of winning are so low.

but hey there's a positive to everything, at least he wasn't leaching xp or stealing farm from any lanes.
