Alright. I'll approach this in an analytical sense.

Varus, from initial launch to now, has always been seen, and was also seen by his developers to be a long-range, artillery poke machine. To beat this build, you get in his face and you don't give him a chance to get away. Assassins, Divers and Vanguard champions excel at this massively and will always mash his face into the ground. When played in botlane, sure the poke build is strong, but he's sacrificing dps for damage. Force him into close range and he won't have enough to save his skin, no matter how much mana and CDR he has.

Where Poke Varus excels at is squishy team compositions. It doesn't matter how much damage you do to him, because he'll always outrange you and 2 shot you because of his power.

Take advantage of his weaknesses.

• Almost no penetration damage early. Take advantage of this with early armour, or have your support / tank do so.
• Low Mobility.
• Seriously high cooldowns during the early.
• Sacrificing DPS for damage.
• Weak versus tanks.
• Damage scales off the longer the game goes - This in particular is why having 1 or more tanks is very useful into a poke Varus.
• Q damage. Piercing Arrow does significantly less damage, 15% of it's potential maximum damage for **each ** thing it goes through. Sure, getting Q'd for 900 damage doesn't sound fun, but if you let yourself get directly hit instead of trying to shunt the damage through a minion wave you get what you ask for
• QSS. I don't care if your champion doesn't need it. If you don't take a QSS into a poke Varus, you're asking to get gibbed off the map.
