My observations about the new magic items so far:

I have limited experience so far with the new items, but I'm going to take a stab at them:

  1. I think primary laner mages are going to be okay as long as their first item is item 3003. It works pretty solid in that role.

  2. Supports don't fit the item reworks.

From what I've seen so far, support mages can't actually get off the ground with the building block items provided in the new items. They come at clunky intervals, offering regular delays in power, and generally struggle to even get a few items completed.

On Morgana Support:

-I've started the typical item 3098 which builds into a item 3092 .

This complicates her build significantly.

If she's rushing aitem 3003 , it means she won't have a completed second item until 5000g. A lot of 20 minute games are ending with only about 6-7k gold except on the fed players. That means she will never power spike on it.

If she rushes a item 3165 for the grievous wounds she needs, she gets no cooldown, which means she can't consistently do any job, or keep up with the adcs who have easy access to CDR.

If she rushes item 3116 , she's just barely getting it before the 20 minute mark, and by then a bad team has already decided the game.

She effectively no longer has a short term goal item build to be able to play a mage support role.

On Zyra support:

Does fine, but generally has to rush item 3802 and then item 3151 to be worth anything.

What it's basically boiling down to now:

There are a tremendous amount of champions who require Grievous wounds or you simply can't control them, and they snowball:

XinZhao Warwick Volibear Vladimir Soraka Kayn Katarina Illaoi Irelia Akali Draven

If you don't have early grievous wounds vs these champs, the game's more or less over.

And now.... Mages don't get it until they are over 6300g ...... at all.

But, AD's can have it with 800g at any point in the game.

I thought when I originally saw these new items they were neat and going to be pretty cool.

Now I'm not so sure, because Sustain is such a large role in the game right now. Whether I'm a laner or a support, I always expect to have access to some form of grievous wounds, because I know Warwick is a viral pick.

But I haven't been able to reach grievous wounds on a support yet.

On the other hand, last night I went 17/3/11 on Karthus 1v1ing an Illaoi top. I went 4/0 outright on her and 5/0/3 before I finally had a death (not to illaoi, but to a poorly fought team fight where I got piled on; still killed 2 in that pile up). My itemization there was item 1056 item 3024 item 3003 item 3110 item 3165 item 3047 item 3001 item 3151 .

Pretty much 1v5'd the other team. They kept dying when i was around 80 HP left.

I mean..... how does a Karthus 1v1 an Illaoi? a Jax? a Wukong? all three were bowing to good Ole Karthus...... and I've maybe played Karthus 20 times since Season 4!

Supports are going to struggle with these items, and then we're about to see that gold supply shrink even more in 8.6. That kind of scares me.

To be honest, at first these AP item changes sounded interesting but after trying them. They got rid of the best thing that morello had, the passive that gave you 20% of your max mana back when you killed someone or gained an assist. I'm not really a fan of these changes anymore.

Seraph's is more powerful mana sustain by far and always has been, but yeah. Morello is now a pretty weak item compared to item 3033 both in utility and in cost (15 flat vs 35% total, 400g more, even though there's a reason AP scales higher than AD, and 30 more AP doesn't really match up with the power of 50 AD on 35% armor pen) It's more statless than it's ever been, yet it's required in 90% of games because players know that sustain teams win.

We've basically entered a meta where unless you're Vladimir or Mordekaiser , Morello is a horrible first, second, or even third item.

Are mages expected to buy item 3076 ?
