How the hell does S rank work?

at first i thought you could only get them in a win other times i thought you needed less than like a death or two

just got an S in a loss going 15/5/7

I've had A's in wins with better scores ( i think...)

KDA, Dmg Dealt to champs, wards, CS.

Your mastery grade works on a percentile basis comparing you to all players using that champion in that role. So for example if you perform in the top 2% of all players in a particular champ/role combination, then you'll get an S+.

You don't necessarily need to win, and you don't necessarily need any particular kda/cs/etc, you just have to have a better overall performance based on whatever metrics riot happens to use compared to all other players in that role on that champ. So if the community on the whole is bad at a particular role/champ combo, then you can do relatively poorly and still get an ok grade.

does this take rank into account?

i find it hard to believe i performed like a top 2% lee sin top laner <.<

It does not take into account rank, so you are technically competing with challenger level players at the very top.

That said though the top 2% overall of ranked players is 'only' high plat or above, and the vast majority of those players aren't <insert champ/role combo here> mains, so getting into the top 2% of performances isn't as impossible as it may sound.

I don't believe it takes role into account either, just champion. When I play non-traditional champs in roles I get reamed. This may be anecdotal, but I'm open to be proven wrong. Consider that it must take into account other people playing that champ during the same time period.

Naw, role matters. https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/204211284-Champion-Mastery-Guide#h1q4

I suspect non-traditional champs in roles are hard to get good ranks in since theres less bad players setting a low bar, and the people who are playing around with off-meta champs are people confident enough to be picking them in the first p[lace (which probably implies they know what they're doing with the champ).

It's not just KDA, different aspects like gold income, wards and turrets destroyed, healing done, etc also factor. Riot refuses to give the exact formula though

It doesn't work

I played a Jhin game today. Finished 16-2 with 13k gold and roughly 150cs, toom 2 towers alone and 2 wuth team and an inhib. Participated in all drake captures and most team fights. Earned an A+. But our Taric who really did not do a lot got an S+. This system makes NO sense.

How long did your game last? I know this is hella late but...

Probably like 30 mins

it's random. some games you could do super well and the system goes "fuck you A+" and other times you could do semi well and you get an S. there is no sure way to get an S. it all random and luck

Lol... it's an obnoxiously complex pattern recognition algorithm.

Farm. Objective control. Warding. KDR. Then it tallies you in with how OTHERS have performed with that champion in that role.

If you run, say, Zed mid... then be a jerk, duo up, and run Zed support, and bask in the S+'s. Etc.

Do they take time in account? I just played a game where i went 7/0/8 had over 100 minion kills and the game ended 19:08min, with trundle jungle. I got an -s. u see i need another s for my lvl 7 trundle. And i have gone games where it's gone over an hour and had over 10 deaths and 20 kills, wich to me can't be as good as to winning this early with thease stats.

To me the ranking system seems pretty bad and off the hook, wich sucks when u need to hit an S to rank up your character. it just seems like if u go hour long game and get 30 kills and 20 deaths, ur gonna get an s anyway even if it's terrible stats.
