PSA: The death count does NOT matter when gauging whether or not a champion can 1v1 you

A Basic Island··45 votes·2,471 views

I see this alot here

people will talk about an enemy champions score, say something like they're x/infinity/x, and say "how were they able to kill me?" I had no deaths at all up unti lthat point! Rito pls fix game.!"

well, kills, deaths, assists are not combat stats. Deaths don't magically decrease the enemy stats, and your kills aren't magically increasing your stats

Also more gold (from kills) to buy better items don't increase my stats?

Well, techincally getting kills does increase your stats - provided you spend the gold you get from it for items and get an level advantage off the xp it grants. Kills, assists, cs and objective all are factors of how much goold one has, but looking at only one of them often gives a false impression.

To be on the safe side, always check the opponents items to get a clear impression of where they stand. And respect their damn champion and his powerspikes. It does not matter if you have a small item adwantage and a 1 level lead, if you try to 1v1 irelia right after she finishes her triforce, she will murder you, and a vayne with 3+items will most likely win 1v1 even if you have a full item up on her, cause that's what she's ment to do. Whenever vayne gets fed in my games, it's just because some idiots think they should 1v1 her...

Arthimetes1 votes

I quite like being the fed mage that one shots the enemy squishy only for them to flip and say "WTF IS THAT DAMAGE PLAY SOMEONE WHO TAKES SKILL FUCKIN NOOB" yet they refuse to buy any MR.

I realized this when I 1v1 a 0/5/0 Illaoi support.

I learned she was 0/5/0 because she kept dying to save her carry.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

That's Illaoi for ya.

Drugoth1 votes

Illaoi support? Wtf kind of crack was that support smoking? Illaoi's kit doesn't really work well for that role at all lol.

MKDkilla2 votes

You can pick anything in any role below high diamond and do well with it.

I've seen support Master Yis get pentas and support Aatrox 1v3 in plat.

It Hertz When IP1 votes

I play her support, only stopped because I got an S on her and moved on to champs I haven't already got chests with.

Illaoi support doesn't have any real CC or ally sustain. What she brings to the table is (relatively) safe harass via her E and the ability to turn an enemy jungler gank into a triple kill for her ADC post-6. If you can keep the lane stalled in the middle or pushed towards their tower and ward river, their jungler will not be able to safely gank without you turning the lane into an instant tentacle slapfest. Her built-in %missing HP sustain means that she can stay in lane without backing longer than traditional tank supports who have to rely solely on HP regen, meaning that you don't end up as far behind on XP as would otherwise happen.

Penns8 votes

Well its not directly the deaths but if you die 10 times you normally spend more time in base and get less exp/gold than if you only died twice.

Supreme Senpai693 votes

Plus if you die a lot it usually means you're bad. If I see a 0/10 Malzahar I'm going to 1v1 it. If I see a 0/0 Vayne I'm not.

doombotMECHA1 votes

if i saw a 0/10 malz i'd still be careful incase of countergank

Supreme Senpai691 votes

I'm the kind of person that goes Lux support and rushes deathcap

Arsenic Sulfur1 votes

Well don't be scared of that. If Malzahar is doing THAT bad the jungler will see it as worthless to gank for him because chances are he's gonna get killed too and if he does get Malz a kill well he is still at a massive disadvantage.

TurquoiseYoshi7 votes

This is especially problematic when people don't take their CSD into account. I'm pretty sure that somewhere near 20 minion CS equals 1 non-FB kill in gold. If you're behind by 80 CS but up by a kill or two, you shouldn't expect to easily 1v1 the person.

TBakes2 votes

Yeah, I think it is 15-20 minions. When I ADC and get killed I always keep looking at our CSD to make sure I'm actually keeping up.

A while back, I was playing a game where I was playing the Yi-zus himself when Sated + Rageblade was still a thing.

Got invaded at my red buff by their Rengo, and got caught out in the river twice by their bot lane and mid lane. Went something like 1/6/1. I just sucked it up and afk farmed for 10 mins. When I 1v3'd their Rengo, Lux, and MF, while still being so far behind, one of them said in chat "Wtf you were 1/6 how did you 1v3 us?!?!"

Gotta love late-game scaling champs, eh?

Nah man he was Master Yi and afk farmed it was more like 15

But you don't start with it :)

Fraggleroc3 votes

Kills are a lot of stats in terms of xp. Deaths = shared gold for enemy team?

Respect a 5/0 Master Yi even when he can be easily cc-ed, simply because he probably outlevels u.

statelesskiller3 votes

Nasus 0/6 was left top lane for 10 minute's alone when he has full cdr because of sheen glacial shroud and runes. adc goes out to collect free gold. gets 2 shot

KDA is important, but it's not the only info you need.

Basically all the information in the game is designed to help you make wiser decisions on when and how to fight. When you see an enemy the first things you see are their level, health, and mana. These should be the first things considered when deciding to fight. These metrics alone should give you a decent idea of if you should fight, but if there are other factors involved as well (ex: they have GA) then that is usually shown on the character model as well.

If you want more information the next important source is the scoreboard, which gives you their items, KDA, and CS. All this is probably of little importance if they are at 10% health or are 3 levels higher than you, but if you are having trouble deciding to fight based on the character model information this is all good supplementary info. Maybe they are the same level and health as you, but when you look at this info you see that they are counter building you and/or have more items than you. Both kills and CS are displayed here as well, but the items and their level are the more important info because someone who has 5 kills but hasn't gone back to shop isn't as scary as someone with an extra full item because they cashed their gold in.

The last source of info is their character portrait which is the most difficult to access. This gives you their direct stats, but is generally unneeded because all that information could be inferred by one of the other two levels of info.

The PSA should be titled "The death count does NOT matter when gauging whether or not your team is winning or losing the game."

Low Elo players all the time want to give up when they get behind in kills. I notice this more on my smurf especially when my team has towers and objectives taken while the opposing team has more kills. People immediately think that we are losing and want to FF at 20.

well, kills, deaths, assists are not combat stats. Deaths don't magically decrease the enemy stats, and your kills aren't** magically increasing your stats **

I have 2 questions about this post;

  1. How are you earning gold/experience while dead and can you share that with the rest of us?
  2. What are you buying that your kill gold isn't adding combat stats?

Thank you.

A Basic Island1 votes
  1. Nidalee as a lower level male champ
  2. Gold spent isn't part of the equation. People are under the assumption if they're 3/0 and haven't backed they can kill the 1/5 who has
Nideak1 votes
  1. Death's early game aren't as bad as it looks. The worst is you could lose 1 wave and the experience to go with it. If your team stomps bot so bad they become 0/5 it doesn't mean they are out of the game. If you allow them to freeze the wave and allow that same bot to grab 100 cs, then he's no longer underfarmed/underleveled and is now a threat to deal with.

  2. Kill gold (300) is around 15 CS (depending on how much gold each minion gives, if casters give 18 and melee's give 22, it would be around 15. Not including the Siege minion) so while you might be up 5/0 (an extra 1500 gold) it doesn't give you much of an advantage if you don't know how to last hit and farm up the CS. Again, you may be an item up from your opponent, but that might not mean anything if he scales better with his items then you or if his kit allows for more burst (or if he completely outplays you).

Point is, KDA don't matter if you can't keep putting pressure on that same opponent (and even if you do, some champions just become hyper carries late in the game and there is nothing you can do if you let it get that late).

Steven Mcburn1 votes

You ignored what I said there. Yes, you can farm and get back into it. Woohoo we're on it! But it's pretty plain english;

When you're dead you get out leveled and miss gold. When you buy almost any item you get combat stats.

Finally...

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Agreed.

Heck, I had a game the other day which was a pretty good example of this. I was playing which tired and experimenting with some stuff, so I had a lot of stupid deaths.

However, despite that I was still the highest level and had close to the most gold throughout the game due to proper farming and could duel with pretty much anybody.

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

If they have spent time dead they are not getting experience, so they should be under leveled in comparison to a deathless champion.

Arakadia1 votes

I was 1/0 as Yi and without my ultimate lost to a 0/5 Diana. I guess your post clears that up lol, I was confused.

Champion Skin1 votes

Kills aren't even worth all that much only about 15 CS or so Deaths are bad because you usually lose exp and CS (but if the you don't lose much CS and gold you don't actually end up that far behind)

Basically what matters when it comes to power is the items (gold) and level the enemy champion is at

i played teemo a while ago. i fed a J4 top lane hard af. i started to build thornmail, randuins, sunfire, and i could finally kill j4 while maybe only having 3 items and 7 deaths.

What Is Smite1 votes

In most cases when an ADC tries to 1v1 me as Fiora and they don't understand I do have my core items and ult up, you are going to die to me even if I am 2/4/2 from being ganked constantly

You're right, it doesn't. But I have to point out that every kill on your enemy is effecting their stats via Experience loss. I've won some games top against Tryndamere purely by denying him level 6, it matters.

Furthermore, using old Ryze as an example, he was a mid/late game hypercarry. Killing me a few times early on wouldn't matter if I stayed up in experience/CS, chances are i'd still duel and solo-kill you in midgame, evening our score, either in teamfights or in lane.

That's a very good example of deaths not mattering.

Comrade Napoleon1 votes

heh i always kill (or force out of lane) my lane opponent at lvl 6 with Singed with 0/3/0 score

Zarvanis1 votes

A Fizz Fizz with 2 kills is significantly more dangerous than an Ahri Ahri with 10.
