Win streak loss streak

Tundra Hunter··31 votes·4,588 views

Just the usual. 14 win for 3 loss (win streak) I was 55% winrate ... so I expected a loss streak to follow due to matchmaking. It didn't miss, 9 loss in a row. AFKs, int feeders, just stomps... u name it.

Is it because my MMR was higher than my elo? No it was gold and I have been plat for 4 seasons. It's just how the matchmaking works to force your winrate around 50%.

Just sharing my experience. Not judging or anything. I'll continue to play, and try to become better, I enjoy the game =)

Rito just forces us to be in 50% winrate.first I get the best damn teams with cooperative people and once the win streak ends riot matches me with the most retarded people possible afks trolls and ppl who give up after the first death

I'm curious as to why you think someone would intentionally program win and loss streaks into matchmaking to "force" a 50% winrate. Wouldn't it be much easier and profitable for riot to simply adjust on a game by game basis? Actually, wouldn't it be more profitable overall to just use the simplest elo system (which is by its nature unbiased)?

Yeah actually I have no idea how it works. I can't tell and I don’t mind. I have noticed over the year that I often have win streak and loss streak, as long as 15 win 15 loss, and it doesn't seems like each game is 50/50, even if it's supposed to be. But maybe it's just luck streak bad luck streak, who knows.

its because the matchmaking system is garbage

How often do these streaks happen? Just from a pure probability standpoint, we expect to get a few long runs of heads if we flip a coin enough times.

I'm just curious because I never see these streaks and I have been playing since season 1. From a pure numbers standpoint, it is obviously impossible to keep everyone on extended win and loss streaks without completely breaking queue times. The only way I see it happening is if matchmaking selects a handful of accounts to go on win/loss streaks and uses everyone else to round out the teams so I wonder how riot selects which accounts go on the streaks and which accounts are used to round out games. I'm also curious how the system decides one time a win streak will be 10 games and the next time it will be 15.

There are just so many odd factors that need to be added into an automated system to ensure win and loss streaks to keep certain accounts at 50%. I wonder why riot would bother adding so many artificial factors that will only end up losing them money.

I don't know about the odd factors but I as for how often the streaks happen, its not as much as the streaks themselves as it is how the individual games go imo.

When you're on a "win streak" you aren't just "winning games" - you're stomping, in fact, pretty much EVERY lane is winning (sometimes even you might be doing worse than usual but your team is carrying you) - and this feeling of getting "free games" "carried" etc.. happens during this streak. Every streak still has even games in it so the streaks aren't always continuous but they all feel the same.

When you're on a "lose streak" you appear to get games that go 1 to 15 very fast, games where your team gives up/tilts/DCs. Once again, not every game, some are even, but it feels that way throughout the streak.

It might just be a psychological thing - you remember the bad losses or the free wins more than you do average games, so it feels like an alternation of unwinnable/freewin.

My best guess if it IS "rigged 50/50" and not just a psychological thing is that it's simply poorly written matchmaking code.

There are plenty of examples out there of games that aren't even close league/elo-wise. If it's able to make such large mistakes then it is no surprise the game feels like it does.

not sure how it works exactly but I imagine its something like this:

You win a bunch of games -> league decides to give you stronger opponents (from say 1 division up) -> elo difference becomes massive because the way it adjusts for you climbing isn't continuous (maybe it even gives you too much elo but doesn't account for it when giving you teammates) -> you lose games -> league overcompensates again -> you get drooling bronze 5 players as opponents -> cycle continues

but who knows maybe it is just psychology

To make you play a ton that's why. When you are on a win streak you are like " yeah i'm on a roll I have to keep playing " then when the losses come in you'll be like " ok I lost 20 games in a row the next one must be a win ". People play more > people buy more skins.

I don't know many people who would keep playing if they are put on a rigged lost streak. On top of that, the queue times increases needed for matchmaking to rig a match would turn away a ton of players.

Using a fair elo model gives better quality games and shorter queue times which leads to players playing more and more money for riot. There is no financial incentive for riot to rig matchmaking.

I looked through all of their articles and there is not a single one about forced 50% winrate. All riot has said is that they try to match everyone with and against people of equal skill so that games are as close to even as possible. This makes sense since that is the goal of the elo model as well. I see nothing about using win and loss streaks to artificially put everyone at 50%. Can you link the article you are referring to?

so feeders get matched with people who play good so they dont quit league that is only reason why they would do it

I had the exact same thing happen to me, though in flex. Was sitting at a 65% winrate on Quinn after a huge winning streak and suddenly the moment I hit my promos I went on a 8 games losing streak, putting me back to exactly 50%. You wanna know the weirdest part? The moment I hit 50%, the exact next game had nothing but high silver and gold players... and one bronze 5 player on the enemy team. Needless to say that was a free win. lol

Look I don't want to doubt Riot. It is entirely possible that the fact that I am playing flex (mostly for fun) can screw over the accuracy of the MMR system. But having at least one high plat player/low diamond player in what should be silver/gold games literally everygame is incerdibly stupid and goes to show that the system as it currentl is incredibly flawed.

I also understand that you should normally get 50% winrate once you hit your skill level, but this does not justify the streaks. If the system really worked as intended you would at most lose 2-3 games in a row before dropping to a level slightly lower than yours then winning again a couple of games before having a higher mmr than you deserve. And this repitition is what should cause the 50% winrate. For some reason though, it takes the system 9 wins in a row, to put you in a 9 loss streak which makes no sense. Unless MMR only changes after 9 played games and not each game.

I relate to this. I don’t want to doubt Riot and the matchmaking system. I get it that from pure statistical logic, win streak loss streak happens. I get it that there is plenty of "bronze to challenger" streams out there. And each season, when I play ranked, I am thinking that I must have been tilting last time I had a loss streak...

And then it just happen again and I rewrite a topic on the boards. I get a huge win streak, get 60 win rate or so... which is not surprising as after placement I go down from platinum to silver. Been sitting plat for 4 years over maybe 3000 games. Then I drop Silver. Of course I should get 60% winrate, right? Games are easy and I get S-, S and S+ all the time.

But then at some point after these win streak, 60 winrate overall, I get crazy games. AFKs and int feeders in a row... that I never had during the last 50 games or so. It's just really weird. And then, well, of course I lose like 10 games in a row. Until it stops when I am back at 50%.

I am just stating facts here and I believe Riot think honestly that their system/algorithm works, but maybe, just maybe, they should think about it, if so many players encounter that.

Once a Rioter said "after win streak, your MMR climb, and you get in a elo higher than yours so you start a loss streak". I understand the logic. But I had my loss streak in gold 3, after climbing back quickly from Silver 1. I have been stuck in plat 3 for 4 seasons, gold 3 is not "above my elo".

I am trying to help here, I don’t really mind personally I play for fun and to improve, if the system put me silver/gold/plat, so be it. The only thing I wish is fair matchs, not free wins / forced losses.

Heroes of the storm has the exact same mathcmaking system as riot. the thing is Riot tries to lie. Blizzard told people how that supposed MMR based matchmaking works. And it works the way to bring you down rather that make fair matches. Let's not forget about some weird shady reason that you get less lp for win and lose more lp for loss at the red side of the map while also your team having usually lower win rate on the red side. Its confirmed.

I uninstalled yesterday because of this.

The 50 percent win rate isn’t organic. 3 of my games (of 4) had quitters and one adc got into an argument with the support and ran down mid (my lane) and went 0/13 on purpose.

The other was a stomp where my team of bronze got matched against all silver and gold.

I only play normals lately as ranked is too stressful and not fun, but i wasted over an hour and a half yesterday on 4 games in a row that were pointless wastes of time.

I would have had fun if the games were close but I lost. Having trolls or being matched where the game is forcing you to lose isn’t fun. I still have like 9 more wins than losses and don’t want to spend another 4 hours miserable so my win rate can get to 50 percent and I can get an actual match.

Sometimes the game matches me where I’m the only Bronze and my laner is gold. I get stomped and my team accuses me of trolling /inting and reports me while I was actually matched against someone a division and a half over me.

BigFBear2 votes

I have exatly the same thing sometimes. I win a lot with normal playing mates (60% winrate) and suddenly i get mixed with trollers and afklers game after game after game and loses 10 games in a row!

Wtf is that!? It's super frustrating to be punished for playing better then the everage in your elo.

If i play better than my Elo pls mix me with higher Elo-Mates and higher Elo-Enemys and not with 20%-winrate-mates against better enemys. There is something with that algorithm. I know sometimes you have bad games but this is different. Its like the system want to bring you down at any cost.

I get these win streaks and lose streaks at times too. But I also sometimes don't get win streaks and lose streaks. It's just simple probability. Having many consecutive wins/loss will not effect the next game. it's just as probable that you lose 10 games in a row as you have any other combination of wins/losses.

But LoL isn't a coin flip, you really do have an impact on your game (it's true, that's why you play after all). Here are some possible explanations for loss streaks:

  1. Tilt might affect your performance. Taking a break between games may help solve this, along with a positive attitude :)
  2. Your enemies get progressively better as you rank up, as a result of your rising mmr. Perhaps you've reached a point where your opponent outperforms you. You can counter this by studying the game, practicing your mechanics, and improving upon your fundamentals.
  3. The system is out to get you and you're bound to lose. Matchmaking purposely tries to make you lose, and it's definitely not your fault but your team which matchmaking sets you up with. So go out and constantly harass your allies with derogatory insults and spam pings while you frustrate not only yourself, but the experience of 4 other people who just wished to have fun.
T4underbolt1 votes

<Removed by Moderation> The only result of your rising mmr is getting worse teammates to compensate for your MMR being too high compared to your enemies in certain range of divisions. One person cant carry the game unless its obviously bot lane that won the lane (the only way bot lane cant carry is when enemy has 3 other lanes - top, jungle, mid fed to oblivion. This is the only situations where fed bot lane can lose). One bad player can lose the game. One good player cant carry it. Especially when matchmaking kicks in and before you get lvl 6 (which is the roaming ability that is enabled for most mid lane champs) all your lanes are in state that its impossible to roam and gank. This game is a coin flip. Whoever gets better team wins.

Danjeng1 votes

Hence explanation number 3 is right on the mark. You really do deserve to be Challenger man. You really do, it's just that your shitty useless team mates hold you back. You are way better than professional players and you carry your pro team if you wanted to. It's just that they were lucky, while you have feeders every game.

T4underbolt1 votes

I love people like you. getting carried every game and then talking sht. You are one of those players i own hard in lane but my team feeds your team hard and then you are proud of winning after being useless. My recent 50+ games were all decided by my team being sht. keep thinking you are good because matchmaking was lucky for you.

It's all RNG matchmaking, yes the better player will climb. The better the player the faster the climb. The fact remains though, that it will take spamming of games, ALOT OF GAMES, to make it to your appropriate skill level. Some may never reach it because of the faulty matchmaking and placement. Too many factors to accurately place anyone. The system is a complete fail to begin with. The one thing you can be sure of, is that all decisions are dictated by making money. Keeping you hyped for "the climb" (the coinflip), keeping you logged in, because that may mean RP purchase.

Matchmaking totally works in order to give us the most balanced and challenging games possibile. That's why you never witness stomps or winstreaks/losestreaks.

... Or maybe it's actually the opposite, and it's just intended to guarantee an overal 50% win ratio :D

This usually happens to me when I predict that I am going to go on a loss streak, and I start thinking about it before it happens. Idk, I played a lot of games where I stomped in bronze on my smurf, and that kinda helped with me "not caring" anymore. Idk if that would help you.

Coin flip RNG is nothing new. Especially when you are only 20% of your team at the start. You have to either have as much impact as 2-3 people, or have at least 3 people doing well enough with minimum game-costing mistakes in order to win. Game outcome can be mathematically solved with an algorithm by using the data available from the League of Legends API. It can suggest to you the optimal win conditions, and show you what your win rate would be if you were to miss out on those conditions, both micro and macro.
