Rumble; Balancing

Rumble right now is a little strong; just for a comparison Rumble's flamespitter (Q) alone does more damage without a mana cost as well than Anivia's ULTIMATE and this is while the flamespitter is still cold and not in the yellow, the yellow damage is almost double the damage of a rank 3 anivia ult (this is just one example).

I will give my own balance suggestion, but the tl:dr is Rumble needs to get toned down, his numbers are just a smitch too high.

NOTE: Heat effects increase the values by 50%

Flamespitter (Q): Damage lowered to 30/45/60/75/90(+25%AP) [from 25/45/65/85/105(+33%AP)]

Electro-Harpoon (E): Damage lowered to 50/70/90/110/130(+35%AP) [from 45/70/95/120/145(+40%AP)]

The Equalizer (R): Damage lowered to 120/180/240(+30%AP) [from 130/185/240(+30%AP)]

Rumble's ulti is powerful af. Might need slight nerfs, nothing huge, but slight.

is my suggestion look massive nerfs? it is just a small hit to ranks 1 and 2 base damage; by small i mean tiny

Nilok3 votes

Those nerfs are fairly heavy across the board, and comparing Flamespitter to Anivia's ult isn't a fair comparison since it has a very short range and puts you in a compromised position for a long period, while Anivia can stand quite a ways off, has a large AoE, provides an innate slow, lasts as long as you want/have mana, and is primarily used to trigger her Frostbite for 200% damage.

The point is you should not be allowed to compared basic spells and ultimate; the fact that it is on level with an ultimate without even taking in account with the 50% damage amp it has just shows how overpowering the spell is; it is comparable because it is damage per second spells-- and flamespitter has actually quite the range to it (like 700) so it is not short range and he can get damage off safely; but rumble does need some nerfs because of his dominance

Rumble is a fairly strong lane bully, but I wouldn't say he has a massive dominance. He has a good win rate early game, but it drops off mid game only to normalize by late game. He is a good counter to early game champions like Pantheon.

Rumble's range is actually only 600, and has to be facing the target so he can't kite with it, which is also why it is stronger. Anivia's Frostbite if Chilled is also much more powerful than her ultimate, her ultimate isn't meant to deal massive damage, so comparing it in such a way isn't helpful.

anivia's strongest damage spell is her Glacial Storm actually and is the reason she is a hyper mage on top of a bunch of utility--- Balanced lane bully is Renekton; Rumble is a little too strong since not only can be bully in lane but he scales well too meaning he has no point of meaningful weakness

GaleWinUnleashed1 votes

Frostbite offers far more powerful and reliable damage than Glacial Storm, though. Granted Glacial Storm is an important factor in maximizing Frostbite's damage, but the storm itself doesn't do enormous damage.

Stacona1 votes

Anivia is a skill champ and the hardest champion in the game- Glacial Storm damage is fully reliable because you have the kit to keep them in it--- and sustain damage spells are meant to deal insane damage over time rather than upfront damage; frostbite is a majour single target nuke when it crits--- karthus defile used to match anivia's glacial storm damage as a basic spell, so when a basic spell ever is on equal or greater power than an ultimate with similar properties the basic spell is properly on the too strong side (or the ultimate is too weak, which anivia is definitely not weak, she is pretty balanced actually)

I find that statement a bit confusing then, you said Rumble's Flamespitter, even without Overheating, does more damage than Anivia's Glacial Storm, but also that Glacial Storm does more damage than her Frostbite, which chilled, does more damage than Flamespitter.

So, Glacial Storm < Flamespitter < Frostbite (Chilled) < Glacial Storm? This math doesn't seem to add up. If what you are saying is true though, Anivia's kit allows Glacial Storm to be more powerful than Rumble's Flamespitter than simply looking at numbers and trying to compare one to one.

I should also note, Rumble cannot cast more than two spells, three if he manages his heat perfectly, while Overheating. This prevents Rumble from using an Overheating Flamespitter twice in a single rotation along with a shield, while Anivia can use Frostbite (Chilled) every time it is up along with her other abilities. Overall, looking at both Anivia and Rumble, Anivia looks like a stronger champion until very late game.

Several good times to beat on Rumble: Pre 3 - When rumble doesn't have both his shield or Flamespitter, he will try to avoid fights by farming with his harpoons, a prime time to try and force him out with an early gank.

Late Game - This depends more on the Rumble you are facing, if he is building tank with some damage, treat him like Tank Meta and build accordingly. If he is building pure mage, you should be able to pop him with some good CC lock down.

A good tactic in general is to flank him so he can only Flamespitter one of you at a time, with all the dashes in League now, that shouldn't be as much of a problem.

He has 100 heat, he has two damage spells, warm zone is 50 heat, spells cost 20 heat each--- this is not difficult math dude... flamespitter cold is 315+100%AP --- Frostbite is 350+100%AP when it crits, Flamespitter can deal 50% more damage than its cold damage and the cold damage already does as much as frostbite's crit when it is cold with no meaningful resource and the same cooldown--- this is without even including the massive basically stun slow and nuke on electro harpoons on top of his ult which ignores the whole heat thing entirely; his autos also deal a crap ton when overheated, but at least he is melee

and why are you saying how to beat him, that is entirely irrelevant ; the point is that rumble needs some balance tweaking, of course everyone is technically beatable with every champion hovering around 50% w/l meaning they win as many games as they lose; range mages do beat rumble which is why rumble is a top lane and not a mid laner, rare cases will you see rumble mid, certain champions are placed in certain positions for a reason while others are very flexible like Kennen who can be top, mid, markman, or support

Nilok1 votes

In order to use Overheating, you have to have above 50 heat due to how it triggers. When he goes in, his shield is how he wins trades and engages, not counting it as a spell that triggers his passive is foolishness. A full rotation will bring his heat up to 60, you then need to balance your heat carefully and can easily overheat. Two to three abilities in Overheat will cause him to be silenced spending on how rapidly you use his skills. Raw math is just theory crafting, actual application is different.

Anivia's Frostbite is on a 5 second CD, less than Flamespitter, it has 400 more range than Flamespitter, and deals its damage all at one time as a targeted skill instead of over 3 seconds in a cone directly in front of Rumble.

It should be noted that you have to be hit by two skill shots in order to be fully slowed, it is not a stun, he has no stun in his kit, the slow cannot root you as movement speed caps at 110. Fabricating information is not helpful. The damage on Electro-Harpoon is a bit high when Overheating, however.

I gave you suggestions if you chose a bad champion against Rumble because you said he has "no meaning full weaknesses". If that was true he would have a much higher win rate instead of hovering around 50%. It is more than ranged mages that beat Rumble, Nasus, Tryn, Rengar, and Quinn also rate well against him.

Rumble currently sits about about in the mid of top laners in effectiveness, which takes into account more than just win rate and what Riot balances around. There are many champions above Rumble in effectiveness and win rate that should be addressed before Rumble.

Perhaps you could suggest some healthy changes to him instead of straight nerfs which would give could give players on both sides more of an ability to outplay each other (Rumble included).

Rumble is designed to be a team fighter, weaker to duels, and have trouble against poke/kite.

Pro teams are playing heavy team fight and engage compositions. Rumble does good there. Maokai is a top pick, Rumble is great in lane against him.

If anything is changed about rumble, it should be his 1v1 power which would likely be his Harpoon damage.

The reason all of his numbers can get so high is all of his abilities have a decent bit of counterplay. His Q is a cone, damage over time that can be avoided. His E forces you to hit two skill shots. His R deals no instant damage, all of it being over time and avoidable.

Basically, 100% of Rumble's damage is avoidable, and his Q and E usually require him to get in close to his target for maximum effectiveness. Rumble doesn't have the base health to get in close and you usually don't get too much health from his best items unless you sacrifice some damage in order to get defenses. He also has no hard crowd control, something huge these days.

Compare Rumble to someone like, say, Malzahar or Jayce and the like you begin to see his weaknesses. To top this off he has low mobility. The only thing that might need a tweak is his ultimate's base damage and ratio.

(BTW, Rumble's Q doesn't last forever, has no crowd control with it, and requires Rumble to face and fight his enemy. He can't kite with it, it's damage effectively being halved or more if he uses it while running away, as well as making him hardly cover any distance as well.)

rumble is pretty strong. it amazes me that he's gone this long without getting his numbers touched, especially on his ultimate. i don't think he's overpowered, but there are few champions that can really 'counterpick' rumble making him far too consistent of a pick.

Well, when Rumble was released... yeah, that was pretty broken.

These were his release numbers:

Flamespitter Damage: 120/195/270/345/420 (+150% AP) Danger Zone: 30% Bonus (156/253.5/351/448.5/546 (+195% AP)) Cool Down: 5 seconds

Electro-Harpoon Damage per Harpoon: 55/85/115/145/175 (+50% AP) Danger Zone: 30% Bonus (71.5/110.5/149.5/188.5/227.5 (+62.5% AP))

The Equalizer Damage: 150/225/300 (+50% AP) instantly, plus 120/160/200 (+25% AP) over the duration Cool Down: 90/75/60 seconds

People talk about release Darius and such, I talk about release Rumble.

basic spell cooldowns never changed, always been 6 seconds; and yes rumble has received many nerfs over the years and still needs them currently

Stacona1 votes

Rumble and Irelia there is a reason why they get nerfs constantly; rumble has actually gotten buffs in the past; but it is time to trim his numbers a little bit because he is too strong --- despite the downvotes people do recognize that rumble is too strong atm since this post is so recognized, sure they like the champion and that is why the post is downvoted, but liking a champion shouldnt get in the way of balancing a champion when they are too strong like Zed, Leblanc, and Katarina which people dont like playing against these champions for a reason and are usually banned; Rumble you dont see a whole lot in solo queue and it isnt like he is brain dead op (hello katarina) but he is still on the strong side regardless
