I am really happy that new Nunu + Willump is not a dark edgelord

Stacona··64 votes·15,022 views

I am so sick of dark edgelord champions, I came to League of Legends because of the lighter feeling, more "cartoonie" and colourful aspect, and fantasy + magic element it has and new Nunu+Willump does that a lot better, not to mention their desperate need of better visuals since the day they were released.

I want the look of the UI and Client to even reflect a more magical and fantasy vibe to it, like the old client had with the scrolls, I don't want to feel depressed when playing a game ever which is why I have not been playing lately (also just lower the surrender vote to 10 minutes and have it just majourity wins like the normal vote - being stuck in a toxic game just spreads the toxicity to other players and then that spreads even further).

Anyways, this is just about saying how I like Nunu + Willump being created about being magical, happy, and cheerful! NO MORE DARK AND EDGY CHAMPIONS PLEASE!!! You ruined Gangplank when you did that because I liked old Gangplank way more since he was happy and jolly and cheered you up playing him, new Gangplank is just depressing to play - Trundle in a similar fashion as well, especially since I liked the hero aspect way more, made him a lot more interesting of a character.

I, too, am glad they didn't dunk them into the "NEEDS MORE DEATH, DESPAIR, AND HORROR" pool like they've done with other cheery characters like Ivern. What little bit of tension they did add to Nunu's story (his mom disappearing after his caravan was jacked), isn't so dark as to be a stain on his cheerful disposition, and it gives him a good purpose for wanting to explore the world. It works very well, and I'm proud that they made a cheerful character and didn't make them tainted by something horrible.

As someone who actually enjoys characters like Jhin and Kalista (who are very well pulled off), the recent "dark" champions often have character-breaking comedic shit overloaded into them that mixes it into a disgusting pudding of shitty comedic relief and over-the-top LITERAL edge quotes. Like who is actually disturbed by Kayn and Aatrox? Who? On paper, it sounds good but in practice, they're both jokes on the field.

Also, characters who are supposted to be serious are also super-generic. Irelia is a good example. They were like" insert Ionian patriotism + some reference to Noxus invasion and maybe pseudo-foreign language to display culture when in reality it's just the same asian freedom fighter."

Akali is just a teenage girl, fulfilling the fantasy of being independent and "having fun ripping the flesh and guts out of her enemies, as their last moments are filled with their muffled screams under the pools of blood they're drowning in" but yea i'm independent and a big gurl now. I don't need no rulez!

That's the reality someone like Akali lives in. It doesn't reflect in her personality, or she has actually no real experience prior to hitting the Rift which..would make little sense.

They can't pull off truly dark characters like Jhin very often because it requires strong introspection.

Imagine if someone had literal Thanos as his personality minus the visuals, abilities and lines. Thanos takes himself and everyone around him seriously to some extent and understands the positions he gets in. People like Fiora or Syndra or Akali are all like "You're pathetic, taste my IMMEASURABLE POWER, WORM!" It's just stupid. Even if they aren't really lying, they're too full of themselves and often, full of shit.

Rant over....fuck!

Arcane Blue Boi1 votes

So true. Jhin actually stands for something, yeah he wants to kill everything, but atleast he thinks he is doing something noble. This is explained by his lore, by his ingame quotes, and even by the way he plays in game. but then you have these kiddos Aatrox Kayn Akali who are just like ''killing is fun XDD''

rtbf2256182411 votes

No...Jhin is well aware of his monstrosities but he views the "beauty" of it to be worth the cost.

It's also an addiction to him.

"I swear each performance is the last...but i lie every time." "It hurts so good." "I am a slave to this passion." "My work asks questions, it never has answers."

SolarisCorvus3 votes

I like Aatrox’s VO because it shows the emotions that someone in his predicament would feel. He expresses sorrow at the fact that he has been reduced to an immortal tool, he lashes in violence because its the only way he can vent out his anger at the fact that he is literally trapped in a sword for eternity. He still has a sense of pride though since he used to be a god and refuses to just be the tool the aspects made him to be. Honestly Aatrox has alot going for him and is more then just edgy sword dude kills for the lolz.

Kayn is edgy to the point that its funny and rhaast has fun with his edgy personality so for me I enjoy it.

I dont like Akali being super edgy tho. Kinda boring.

rtbf2256182411 votes

You do realize Aatrox and Kayn do not come across as ancient, wise as fuck immortal monsters but like little children throwing a temper tantrum at everything they don't like?

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

Kayn isn't ancient. Aatrox has been trapped and driven insane in his prison. He's more like Renekton.

rtbf2256182411 votes

Even Renekton sounds more intimidating, ferocious and actually insane than Aatrox because Aatrox keeps lamenting his quotes like the most GENERIC DRAMA THEATER ACTOR EVER. Even his accent amplifies that.

SolarisCorvus1 votes

Kayn’s like eighteen and while Rhaast is really old he isnt supposed to be wise, hes all about killing for fun.

Aatrox isnt wise either since hes basically insane due to his imprisonment. Hes a very broken being who isnt much else but a crazed killer.

rtbf2256182411 votes

I mean Rhaast, obviously.

And you're basically proving my point because this means they have effectively exterminated the Darkin as a species with this revamp of a gang of insane evil Ascended.

SolarisCorvus1 votes

Your point was that they were just jokes due to their quotes. Aatrox and Rhaast are still extremely powerful beings with goals that will involve alot of destruction. Just because they have human qualities like sadness and a sense of humor doesnt take away from the fact that they are still ancient evils that have been released upon runeterra.

That and he was adopted by a bunch of assassins....not Ezio assassins creed assassins but actually "we murder for our own happiness" assassins.

I mean the lore in itself is not supposed to be joyfull and shit, but that doesn't mean nice champions can't exist, however saying you are glad that Nunu isn't an edgelord is like saying you are glad the sun rises in the morning, it was pretty obvious that a dark and sinister theme does not fit the champion, thats why he ended up as he is.

What made you think he would be?

Ivern is basically happy and high, like Bob Ross. But in his lore, he used to be a murderous, horrible human being who's first thought on seeing a magical Ionian tree was "firewood." Ivern's entire carefree nature, his jovial spirit, and his mythical quality of being so infinite that he's oblivious to a lot of immediate concerns of mere mortals is just dragged into the muck by the fact that "Oh, he's actually a former murderer, and not this long lived beloved nature spirit that loves everything big and small."

Then there's Zac. His old lore had the scientists who made him steal him and raise him their own child. He loved them, they taught him many things, and he always had a deep familial bond with his adopted family. It was a really beautiful story about love, family, and green blobs. But then they rewrote his lore and murdered his parents, so now he sulks around in the sewer pipes of Zaun popping out and fighting people when he senses bad guys. They ruined the beauty of his unique family situation and tarnished his good nature with utter tragedy.

Zoe, in game is a mystical child, and incredibly cheerful and happy, and gets into all kinds of mischief. In her lore, she nonchalantly nukes a village with a meteor to stop some people who were coming at her, wondering if some children she saw playing in that same village would possibly find the world rune that her meteor would unearth (hint, they're dead now, but she's oblivious). Her lore basically paints her as so oblivious to the nature of mortality and her own powers that she's downright sociopathic to a degree.

Up to now, Riot's had a really bad run with keeping happy, carefree characters happy and carefree. Until Nunu, a good deal of them are blighted by something horrendous that makes them less happy and jovial than their in game personalities would have us believe. They've been tainted with sadness, and it really detracted from their overall characterization. That's why there was concern that they'd do something similar with Nunu.

This so much. I'm still mildly bitter about what they did with Fizz, taking a "good-natured" playful character and making him responsible for many deaths due to lost ships.

It'd be different if they ever resolved these issues with these characters, i.e. having Zac deal with his tragedy to try and heal, but Riot has a long track record of also never following up on any of their lore to resolve things.

It's not even a matter of follow up to me. Zac didn't need to have his parents murdered to be a functional character. His family experience was already pretty unique in just about anything I've read or played. I think he was a much better character from a lore perspective having a human mom and human dad that he returned home to every night, that made him remember that not all humans are bad, that love is a very real thing. This whole thing about killing off his parents has future potential to send Zac to a REALLY FUCKING DARK PLACE and losing all hope and compassion for humanity. He didn't have that potential in his old lore because he always had love to return to, and that made him a better, happier character.

FattyDrake3 votes

This whole thing about killing off his parents has future potential to send Zac to a REALLY FUCKING DARK PLACE and losing all hope and compassion for humanity.

It also has the potential to send him to a really good place, better than he would've been had it not happened. He's a result of his environment, sure, (that's the nature of his being) but he also can affect his environment. From a storytelling perspective, it does add a lot more internal tension to the character. Do I necessarily agree with the specific direction they took? Maybe not but it makes sense from a narrative perspective and makes for a more engaging story.

I don't mind these glimpses of darkness in characters, I just think it's way over done and pretty tired by now.

Part of me thinks Riot likes making backstories of characters with both good and bad sides so more people can identify with parts of a champ and therefore acquire/play/buy more skins for them. If a character is unambiguously good or bad, that limits the audience for them.

Again, I'm not saying I necessarily agree with their direction (again, they really should give darkness a rest, OMFG) but there are reasons for doing them. And it wouldn't suck so bad if they actually followed up with stories for these champions that dealt with the issues they created for them. But with 140+ champs, it'll be forever, if at all, they ever get around to it.

Zoe is 1000+ years old and should learn to grow up

... I hate that character and everything she represents. She's the type of person/god to make life for everyone around her exceedingly difficult and doesn't mind killing people for fun.

In game there's nothing that I like more than beating her face in with Vi

(please dont take this too seriously. Sometimes the champion's personality becomes my personality. I have become one with the champion)

There are 2 parts tto Zoe:

The Host (the body you see) and The Aspect

The Aspect was designed to be trolly and mischievous so a little kid including the personality fits.

Literally nothing about Ivern is ruined by the fact that he used to be a barbarian though? Stating that he is ruined because he actually has some sort of depth and history, showing how powerful the magic is that affected him. But noooooooooooooo, we can't have that, we can't have story with our happy characters, we can't portray reality at all.

Zac, again, lived in Zaun, reality is something bad more than likely would happen. Now Zac goes around and tries to protect other people and their families, so they can ahve have what he lost. He is still happy and cherishes his family and what he had, and wants to give others what he had, that makes him even better than before.

Zoe, or well her Targonian Aspect actually, cause in the lore the aspect basically infected her, has neverending boredom and excitement, and merely does whatever the hell it wants, kinda like Jinx, but with a lot of powers.

Honestly, Riot is doing good with their characters, adding a little touch of reality with them, making them more than your G rated cartoon characters is a nice touch, and actually makes them seem more real and alive, which is the entire point of lore changes.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Ivern's story is one of redemption. That he can start from a dark place and become happy should be hopeful, not dreadful.

Zac is Spiderman. He had a bad thing happen to him, but continues to be happy and upbeat, because that's how his parents raise him.

Just because something isn't innocent, doesn't mean it can't be happy.

InB4 the lore comes out fully telling the story of how Willump is actually a dark destroyer sent by otherworldly forces, the one truly responsible for the extinction of all Yetis but himself.

And Nunu is actually a psychopathic serial murderer with a penchant for burying people alive in snow...

I would honestly be impressed if they somehow managed to make nunu into a dark edgelord, lol. How would they even manage that, like

"I didn't choose the frelijord, it chose me" Nunu

"I don't trust anyone but me and my monster" Nunu

"The frelijord turned their back on me... I am the forgotten boy" Nunu

NO MORE DARK AND EDGY CHAMPIONS PLEASE I think you don't have enough knowledge of League's lore to judge which champion is considered edgy. Or maybe our definitions of edgy aren't the same. For me champion is edgy if he's killing and destroying just because. Pyke for example, was betrayed, they cut his rope. Therefore I don't consider him edgy. He has a reason. Ahri who is widely considered to be cheerful, seductive and playful little fox turns out to be the one that craves for living being's souls and that killed her lover/boyfriend because she wanted to taste his memories. Annie also has a similar story. Also Yorick. Just because he's from Shadow Isles he's automatically classified as edgy although he wasn't consumed the Mist and keeps fighting it hoping that one day Blessed Isles will be renewed. And Gangplank had to be changed to make Illaoi's lore possible and to make Mf a good character. But still, they haven't made him evil. It is said in his and Illaioi's short story that they were once lovers. Also I wanted to say that in-game I pretty much don't care if a champion is bad as long as I'm having fun playing him. Sure I don't like Thresh and Hecarim invading Bilgewater, but that creates an opportunity for an amazing story (Shadow and Fortune). My point is as long as there are good characters to fight the bad ones there's balance and enough choice to fit everyone's needs.

Divewing2 votes

I'll admit that Riot has been a bit overboard recently, but if you're disregarding a story simply due to it not being Disney rainbows and gumdrops, that's your problem.

The Gangplank rework was amazing and gave him actual character, as well as a gravitas as an actual pirate captain than what he had before.

If you look for a flaw, you will always find one.

Yeah, i remember the old scroll themed profile page and store, and i loved it so much i got so sad when they took that away I never signed to this game to play dark edgelord shit, i signed because it looked like a world full of magic and fantasy i just enjoyed being in. And now that you make me think about it, it is definitly a reason i used to enjoy LoL more

Nunu is exactly the sort of cheerful male character I was always hoping Riot'd introduce. Just listening to the VO makes me smile; they captured the cheerful and innocent joy of a kid fantastically.

I am glad Nunu & Willump aren't dark and edgy because it just wouldn't fit them. But I like a variety of styles, and my favorites are usually dark and edgy so I absolutely want more of them. But I don't think champions that are not that way should become that way with reworks.

Wild Geese2 votes

League has a really clean cartoon aesthetic, I don't think they've ever really made anything truely dark and edgey except maybe some attempts in season 0-2 when they had a more gritty style. (Old Urgot, Karthus, Sion maybe).

Zoe is an unrepentant deity that has zero respect for human life. Her color story even goes into this--how being responsible for killing everyone in an entire village does not affect her in the slightest and she just goes on her merry way with a shrug. Basically, Zoe is a psychopath.

Yea but immediately after that not only were the two new champions were edge lords but not one but 2 of the reworks were. Zoe also was a 2017 champion. Take a look at all the 2018 champions/reworks so far. Nunu is kinda a breath of fresh air honestly.

If your talking about Kai sa she is far from edgy, shes more reserved and positive. While Pyke is dark I dont think he counts as edgy because he just comes off as someone doing their job since hes just a hitman working for fish.

Chembaron Yamada1 votes

Lighthearted or edgy, I don't give a fuck. All I am here for is the great steampunk thematic that this game brings to the table thanks to Piltover and Zaun.

Unfortunately, Piltover doesn't get nearly as much attention when it comes to champions as it deserves.... still just 7 champions from there. :(

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

Why would they make them edgy?

SolarisCorvus1 votes

Just cause gangplank is a more realistic version of a pirate and not a one dimensional character that was basically a jolly pirate all the time doesnt mean hes edgy or depressing. Hes a the biggest boss of one of the most dangerous reigons on runeterra, he has to be intimidating in order to keep his crew in line.

I dont even know you can call Trundle edgy because his new voicelines just make him out to be a guy who wants to be king and hit stuff with his club. No sign of edginess anywhere.
