Don't lose your shit, they're changing base mana and regen to balance it out.

I have very little faith that Riot is going to handle this delicately. They're probably going to overbuff Lulu and cause her solo lane to go out of control, and then gut her while forgetting that support Lulu exists.

Why are they even doing this anyways? They claim it's because mana potions tend to benefit certain types of champions over others. Like wowee mana starved champions benefit from mana pots more than pseudo-resourceless champs who woulda thunk it?

I'm not going to speculate before I've even seen anything. It only makes you upset before you're hurt.

Voluug1310 votes

By the time you see the changes, it will be too late. Riot doesnt change announced things unless its LCSinn or Riven.

Deep Terror Nami2 votes

Huh? It's called PBE.

Voluug1316 votes

It doesnt work like that.

PBE is to bugfix changes that are already done for the most part. Riot has NEVER done big changes even in PBE. If a kit or new item reaches PBE its 85% done for shipping. And its already established some things cant be fixed/balanced with changing numbers only (see basically every CertainlyT champion released and morde)

meanwhile energy champions like Zed LeeSin Akali get awesome energy regain while Shen energy resources makes him worse then mana using champions.

I'm guessing that's the point?

Thoses champions don't get 'Energy' pots.(please don't get me wrong, I really hate energy type/resourceless champs like riven, yas, garen ect. and would like mana pots remain- I'm one of few who acutally buys mana pots at the start.) -Poor argument. Just a thought.

And maybe because the no mana pots at early game makes summoner 13 a viable optional on mega-mana eaters.

Sulghunter22 votes

I would buy three mana pots and one health pot while supporting as Sona, she makes Lux look resourceless with how quickly spell rotations burn through mana.

This. Riot really hates Sona, and I just don't know why

Champions playstyle is bland and not interactive, oppressive in lane but countered by her lack of ability to do much in a real fight. champion is mechanically simple Champion is an aura bot champions playerbase throws a gigantic tantrum any time she is changed or changes are proposed Champs design is inherently flawed for obvious reasons but any suggestion of a rework is met with flaming champ has to be permanently kept in a vlad state where she can't be allowed to be good because her mechanics are badly designed Every time riot touches this champion that needs to be changed, her playerbase throws a tantrum

Gee I wonder why riot doesn't like Sona?

Probably because her changes are bad? It's not like the fans always through a tantrum over nothing.

HidingOverHere5 votes

They really should make sona like the war horn from Monster Hunter or (dare i say it?) Invoker. Rather than press a button and insta bland aoe buff, you have to press a certain combination of buttons to get the right buff you want. Makes more sense too you have to play different tunes to get different buffs perhap like: increased lifesteal, increased armor, everyone around you gets a shield, every enemy around you gets atk speed slowed, increased tenacity etc. This would make her so much more useful and expand her possibilities but... Riot says thats too hard so: dmg up, life up, speed up, stun.

Chromatic Eagle1 votes

I imagine they want her to be the same learning level, so I doubt they'll turn her into something like the Invoker.

RedCyclone2 votes

Nope, long time Sona player here, I don't think I am the only one who wanted her to get harder to play when she got reworked

Love the entire concept of the champion, but she seriously needs a higher cap at the probable expense of her skillfloor being lifted a bit

But the rework did jack shit for difficulty, so yay, Riot keeps the excuse of not allowing her to do much other then be cruise control as a support or just completely out of role as a AP mage

Sona Ping4 votes

It's unfortunate but at a one hundred eighty second cooldown, summoner 13 is never really a viable option.

Blades of Navori3 votes

This is unfortunately where you're wrong .

A mid lane mage such as Veigar or Syndra who rely on combos to eliminate will find it useful.

Veigar runs out of mana, enemy mage is also low right? Bam! Veigar can Now combo the enemy efficiently leaving the mana starved enemy defenseless.

Only 2 cases where it's useless

  1. Enemy is resourceless
  2. Enemy also has this

Yes, or he could, in this particular scenario, take Ignite and accomplish the same thing as well as boosting his burst damage potential at the same time.

Blades of Navori1 votes

Veigar doesn't need ignite His combos usually slaughter the enemy. People like azir need ignite

Sona Ping1 votes

You missed the point; that was in response to your specific, engineered scenario, an example where his combo wasn't enough to slaughter the enemy. Veigar may not need Ignite but he doesn't need Clarity either. Him not needing doesn't change how lackluster Clarity is, to the extent it's in the 0.4% "Other" category for Summoner Spells on the Rift.

ahferroin71 votes

Really? If you are managing your mana usage right that should be just fine. I often play it on Karrthus, and have learned to manage my mana usage around that cooldown, and find I actually do significantly better by not constantly spamming my Q.

Sona Ping1 votes

Yes, it's unfortunate but it really is the case. It could be a different story with lower cooldown but as it stands for the cost/benefit of Clarity is too power; the cost of Clarity (Summoner slot and cooldown) is too high for its benefits.

It's clearer if we look at the change a Summoner Spell causes to the champion. Clarity restores mana allowing the use of abilities meaning that the power granted by it's use is tied to the power of the champion. Unlike it's more popular comrades on the rift, Clarity only restores some of the champion's performance while the others increase the power and potential of the champion. Clarity is limited to whatever the champion's power is.

{quoted}

If you are managing your mana usage right that should be just fine.

The argument can also be made that a player managing their mana usage right would not need Clarity and can take another Summoner Spell. Further, Clarity is the only Summoner Spell that a player is encouraged through the game mechanics to make redundant and unhelpful through buying their standard items.

ahferroin71 votes

A lot of that depends on the champ and the play-style of the person playing them. On a champ like Sejuani, who's already really mana efficient and needs mobility pretty desperately, Clarity is a horrible pick. On a champ who isn't inherently mana-efficient though, there are two reasons you can't use spells, you either run out of mana or you die. Taking Clarity on such champs reduces the chances of running out of mana, and in turn reduces the chances of dying because you couldn't burst down someone who is trying to kill you.

It is worth noging that Karrthus is one of the only champs I ever take Clarity on on SR or Treeline, because when I take flash on him, I save it for cases when I know I'm going to die, so I can get into position to cause absolute maximum damage with my passive, and based on that, Clarity is more useful to my play style.

Sona Ping1 votes

Note: I am not trying to chastise or censure you or anyone else for taking Clarity nor am I even trying to convince anyone not to take it. Please keep that over the rest of this post as one reads it.

{quoted}

A lot of that depends on the champ and the play-style of the person playing them.

No, none of it depends on that because it is based on Math; playstyle has nothing to do with it. A champion who uses Ignite does more damage in a rotation than the equivalent without it, specifically 70-410 damage more. lol That's just an indisputable fact. To re-illustrate part of the explanation in the previous post, Clarity will never make a champion do more damage in a rotation; Ignite expands the champion's ability in terms of damage potential.

Taking Clarity on such champs reduces the chances of running out of mana, and in turn reduces the chances of dying because you couldn't burst down someone who is trying to kill you.

Likewise, Clarity does not expand your champion's capability in this scenario either; it only allows the player to use the capabilities in the kit and only specifically when the reason is that they have run out of mana, which is a very limited scenario. Ignite also helps burst down someone who is trying to kill you and is helpful even when one does have mana while Barrier, Exhaust, and Heal each lessen the enemy's ability to do the same. Further, beyond their usefulness when the champion has mana, they are usually a more reliable defensive tool than the abilities present in the champion's kit, that is, when the spells just aren't simply better.

How is akali's energy regen better than shen's

My Waifu Vanilla1 votes

Akali Q cd is shorter than Shen's passive in a realistic scenario and since Akali Q technically refunds itself with the actual refund and the time it takes to use your auto she only has 2 REAL spenders.

Joe Dredd1 votes

Shen also gets energy refunded through his E. And his W makes his passive come up more. And he doesn't even use w that often tbh So shen only has 2 skills he has a cost on.

tbh i like shen's energy pool, i feel like he's the only character it was done well on. he has to make decisions with his ability usage and pool energy, it's interesting gameplay. the others don't really seem to feel the limitations of the resource as much and can spam a lot harder.

1000angrybees22 votes

Don't forget the others: Nami, Sona, Soraka, Janna, Zilean... even the mage supports, like Zyra, Lux, Morg and Orianna.

They all have some hefty costs, and benefit a LOT from mana potions to stay in lane long enough. But hey, they're gonna 'change mana and regen,' even though I'm pretty sure making that more efficient goes against their previous statement of having mana champs worry about mana early and less late game. Mana potions cost should just be upped like health potion. I really don't see the problem with it being in the game.

Blades of Navori6 votes

My friend, an Orianna main, got really upset about mana pot removal

Illydth16 votes

^^^ This.

Mana pots only allow mage types to sustain slightly longer against these kinds of champions till they're forced to back...they somewhat ease the disparity. Even now with mana potions the best you can hope for is an even loss in lane (backing at the same point a forced off lane zed is). If you don't manage to push them off lane, you back to disparity in CS and wave push.

As an evenly matched mana champion against a non-mana champion there WAS one way to get the upper hand in lane: If you could do more damage to your lane opponent than they could heal with their small number of health pots, you could gain a lane / CS advantage. The loss of mana potions makes this forumla almost moot. Whereas Zed can purchase health potions and have an infinite mana supply, with enough damage to cause a lot of pain, a Mid-lane mage (for example) cannot continue increasing their mana to keep up with Zed's sustain in HP. Without mana a Mid-lane mage folds and gets manhandled by Zed's damage.

What this means is Zed buys health potions and then waits. The best the mid-lane mage can hope for is to play a passive farm lane till they run out of mana, get pushed off lane by Zed going aggressive, and then get wave pushed/lose CS to Zed's continued sustain while they have to back. Of course the better play is for an aggressive Zed to force mana usage (though zoning of the Mid-lane Mage off Farm through the use of sustainable active damage) to force the Mid-lane mage to play fast and loose with their mana...requiring them to back MUCH more frequently or fall prey to a medium health / full energy zed going all in on the mostly healed but out of mana mage for at best a very one sided trade.

While I admit this is a pessimistic view without seeing how it plays out in game, I see very little way for a mana intensive champion (any mid-lane mage) to do anything but fail miserably in lane against a character like Yas or Zed. It doesn't appear to be a matter of whether you will or won't lose lane, but a matter of the degree of how badly you lose lane. AT BEST this seems to be a snowball opportunity for the enemy mid-lane champion every game you step foot into mid lane with a mana champion.

Next, lets take a support like Sona or Soraka. They've got sustain in lane with a heal and by using mana potions and heal abilities, you effectively create a 3 way lane type: Kill Lane, Poke Lane, and Sustain Lane. By removing mana regen ability from healing Supports you effectively remove Sustain Lanes from the game and the bot lane triangle folds...Kill lanes fold to Poke Lanes and there is no sustain lane to stop the poke lane.

Whlie Soraka or Sona is currently a great pick against a Caitlyn or Tristana bot lane comp, eventually it becomes as easy as going in on the ADC once or twice with your superior damage to push the support off lane and provide you either a free kill on the ADC or a free bot lane tower. Even currently the most effective way to beat a bot lane with a Sona Support is to focus the Sona support...Sona's squishy nature followed by her one trick pony/long cast time spells makes her a fairly easy target for an aggressive bot-lane comp. WIthout mana pots, this becomes even easier, focus fire Sona a few times and you force her to blow heal spells early, suck up all her mana quickly, and be either useless for an engage or to back and leave her ADC hanging and lose out on gold herself.

Healing/sustain supports are already having a hard enough time being bullied off lane by tanky "hook" supports like Blitz, Naut or Thresh. Removing healing support's ability to regain mana to continue healing does nothing for the game except forces them to back twice as often, leaving their ADC's vulnerable for far longer periods of time and forcing less and less ability to play what is already considered the worst role in LoL.

I do not understand the need to reduce the overall ability to sustain by almost all champions and completely REMOVING the ability to sustain by a limited set of others. The stated goal for removing mana potions was to eliminate the (assumeably) unfair benefits to the "some champions" that found them useful...under the auspices that items useful only to some champions somehow give those champions more power or are "unfair" in some way. What you seem to be ignoring is that there are a whole set of champions that were given abilities based DIRECTLY around the fact that these "unfair" advantages existed in the game. Mid lane Zed and Yas stand up to mid lane Annie or Vel'Koz specifically because they use energy and not mana which is balanced by the fact that Vel and Annie could use mana potions to keep themselves in killing shape for longer periods of time...the result was a skilled match-up of chicken in lane, make a mistake and generally Vel or Anne or Zed or Yas had the energy or mana available to take advantage of the mistake. Instead, now, an aggressive Zed can force extreme mana usage by an enemy Vel, heal that damage with a limited set of mana potions, and then take advantage of the mana drought either with extended uncontested CS farming or a guaranteed/no risk all in for the kill. I might be convinced this wasn't a problem if I saw something on the Mage side that gave them the same ability.

I've played many, many games in LoL, I don't think I've EVER heard the words "God, potions are just too powerful..." I have to wonder if you're not "fixing" something that really has no need to be fixed. This has the "Major League Baseball" feel of "Players just aren't scoring enough points so the game is boring"...it has the feel to it that you want more 20/0 snowball lanes and less 2/2 vs. 3/1 lanes by the end of 15 minutes of play.

Voluug139 votes

JFC this is what I wanted to say. Removing Mana potion only exacerbates the manaless champion advantage.

Riot should stop pretending manaless champions are some sort of ''niche'' instead of the most overplayed champions in the game and finally balance around mana champions having to face manaless champions with equally powerful kits. Riven Zed Yasuo LeeSin

While I am under the same impression as you. They have said they were adjusting mana regen. This might actually turn into a buff for mana hunger champs by allowing them to not have to purchase mana pots over hp pots. Allowing them to stay in lane longer vs their resource less counter-part. Is this likely to be the case? I have no idea. Is this what Riot intends to happen? Probably. If this happens would I be happy? Hells ya.

It's contuining to head that way though, I see more AD mids as my opponents than I do mages. Remove mana potions and most mages won't be able to keep up. It's already a struggle for mana hungry champs to keep up in wave clear vs non mana champs. No potions and what was said earlier will be true. Mana champs will be behind Energy and mana less in lane, it's just a matter of how much.

If you needed mana pots to stay in lane before that badly, you were doing something terribly wrong. Doran's ring + flask takes care of everything you need. I don't even get flask on her when I mid/top. Go early double Doran's or rush into Morello.

Frostfang is gonna have 100% mana regen and Lulu support really doesn't have a mana problem if you don't spam her lance

Orangesilk9 votes

Lulu support doesn't really do anything to win her lane if she doesn't spam her lance.

Athenes Lulu1 votes

Unfortunately, you have to spam something to stay useful as Lulu support in lane. Not just lance, but shields as well if it's against shitty harass-heavy matchups.

Level 1-5 for Lulu is already horrendeous in a duo lane, removing mana sustain would make her early laning as support even harder. I mean, you don't get frostfang until you back at least once. And by that time, she is already level 5-8 depending on how ahead she is.

sreggad2 votes

I'm gonna disagree with that. All you need to do is help your adc make trades hurt more. So lancing and/or shielding when your adc goes for a trade or in response to the enemy going in for a trade. Is all that is needed. You poke people with your auto. If your spamming your abilities to the point your out of mana and relying on mana potions to keep you in lane your gonna be fucked when the jungler ganks you. conserving your mana isn't that hard. just don't lance every time it's off cooldown.

The idea your only relevant as long as your putting the hurt on the enemies or mitigating all the damage is absurd.
