TP removal would be pretty garbage

If you still want to have some freedom in your runes and build, you're now going to be forced into people who can either split fucking awesomely (Yi, Trynd, Fiora), or who can more effectively roam without sacrificing anything for it (Shen, Sion, Galio). If you want to play someone who doesn't fit into those and still survive in the meta that's been established for top lane then you're going to need to try and find a way to fit Predator onto your build and that's pretty fuckin lame.

Removing TP will effectively stifle champion diversity more than anything else. Before it can ever be done, top lane needs to be fixed up.

As it is now, I can fall behind a bit but still make a good TP play to help my team and remain relevant in the game. If TP gets removed, now if I lose lane I have no chance to come back, because I keep getting this fuckin' Fiora jumping into my face more and more often (Or a Panth who can tank like two turret shots before taking ANY damage and that's lame).

I don't mind the meta atm in any way, really, and I play 3s more than 5s right now to be completely honest. But if TP is removed I think all it's going to do is hurt the game.

Im sorry, but who's removing TP?

It comes from Meddler's comments on TP in the most recent Gameplay Thoughts. Now, he doesn't explicitly SAY TP will be removed. To be more specific, here are his exact words about it.

  • Looking at TP, and chilling effect it has on the game in many cases, both in pro and regular play. Things like how it makes it harder to fight and meaningfully win in top lane, increases risk of aggressive play in bot (don't so you don't get TP flanked), leads to periods of 'wait until TP is up before trying anything late game etc.

So, it's something that's on their radar. Whether that is good or bad, only time will tell.

Has this guy lost his god damn mind? Or his team or whoever came up with the genius idea of thinking that TP is problematic?!

his comment is basically saying:

"We don't want top to have any impact on the game"

TPing bot is big portion of all top lane impact while in the laning phase. They might aswell just delete top while they are at it.

Nerfing bot lane impact so top doesn't have to TP down there as soon as a fight happens is of course out of the question since you would have to nerf bot and that is just humanly impossible am I right Riot?

That would likely explain why top lane has felt so bad for quite some time. TP has essentially been the only way top ever got to participate with the rest of their team, with the only alternative being splitpushing, so Riot intentionally limiting both TP and splitpushing strats has effectively made the position far less relevant to games than it deserves to be.

What bothers me more isn't so much Riot's opinions on TP -- it likely does have a chilling effect in pro play -- but the fact that top lane has remained dependent on TP as their primary means of contributing to games, and is suffering tremendously in an environment where the summoner spell is intentionally being held back with no compensation. I actually agree to some extent with what Meddler said: for the past few seasons, the typical pattern for top laners has been to AFK farm an off-lane, and wait until TP comes off cooldown so that they can jump into fights. This isn't really interesting for the top laner either, so I think, one way or another, the solution should be to allow top laners to participate much more freely. This should also be the first priority, and if TP gets nerfed or removed without anything being done to help top laners, that is going to have major and lasting negative repercussions.

While this might be a bit out of left field, I think one potential compromise would be to implement Teleport as an environmental feature, and completely rework inner turrets (so the turrets between the outer and inhib turrets) into teleporter pads: while in base or on another pad, channeling on something and selecting a pad could teleport you there, incurring a large cooldown, and if that structure were to be destroyed, you would lose access to it, but the enemy would be able to use it instead. This could allow for better recovery in lane, while also allowing any champion to get to another lane quickly, though in a manner that would allow for better telegraphing (you wouldn't be parachuting into the middle of combat). Later on, this could also allow for desperate pushes to happen without requiring as much raw power, since you could teleport close to the enemy inhib in a much shorter amount of time. Obviously this would be a major change, likely Preseason level, but if it does happen to work, it could allow for the removal of TP in a way that would still give top laners much more agency over the map.
