I see so many people blaming this or that as the sole reason for this game not being fun,
but the answer for why the game isn't fun anymore is very simple and all encompassing. Riot has made a select cadre of characters and playstyles ridiculously overpowered with their extremely stupid runes reforged and leaving all other characters behind. The reason you're not having fun is because this select group of champs and playstyles have to be banned, countered or picked because if you don't then you're at a guaranteed disadvantage. It's not about playing whoever you want to play and playing them however you want to play them. It's about breaking the game with the most OP things currently in the meta. If you play who you want, you are now at a disadvantage. Unless it's one of those select champs.
Simply put, there is no variety, there is no choice, therefore there is no agency on your part. Too many things are out of your control and whatever control you can exert is too small to matter. You are forced to play within a particular group of characters or the enemy team will outpick you. You're forced to buy certain items or the enemy will itemize better than you. You're forced to cater to specific lanes or the enemy jungler will and you'll fall behind. You're forced to play around short game times or the enemy team will do it instead and you'll lose. Riot is forcing you out of choices. That's why this game isn't fun anymore, because Riot is slowly eliminating your choices and removing your agency. No matter how well you play, you do not matter anymore. And you know what? They know it.
That is why they released runes reforged, because there's less choice, less variety and fewer variables, making it easier for them to control. With runes and masteries before, there were too many variables that interacted unpredictably. This made the game fun, but it made it difficult for Riot to control. Riot is not in the business of fun. Not anymore.
I get that when you get out of a game, you're inclined to blame that "thing" that beat you as the problem, but the issue with LoL not being fun is bigger than that. Don't let Riot get the wrong idea. Even if they're too stubborn to improve the game, it's better to know that they're doing it despite the player base fully understanding what was wrong with it to begin with.
