Does Gnar not lane well? I have troubles being effective at lane phase with him.

Or is he just a survive-the-lane-phase lategame tank?

Gnar is ranged, and bullies harder than teemo and darius combined

He has godlike laning stage versus almost anyone in the game.

Gnar is vert strong in the laning phase. Build sunfire into full tank.

BoRK -> SF cape. All set. He can bully melee very easily. He gets pushed out by ranged easily.

BotRK ---> Randuin's Omen. Sunfire Cape is pointless on someone who lanes as a Ranged Champion. And the later you get Sunfire Cape, the more pointless it becomes.

Break this down. If you get Sunfire Cape first, you waste the Aura for most of your Lane Phase because you're rarely be in range of the Enemy Champion. If you get it second, its Aura is mitigated by common Early-to-Mid game items such as Locket, Abyssal and Athene's - even Mercs for that matter. So in essence, you're trading off 25 Armor, 50 HP, Cold Steel's Passive Effect and Randuin's Active Ability for very little gain.

This makes sense, but outside the lane phase wouldn't SFC give team fight engages more contribution to the fight (area damage) than Randuin's defensive attributes? Randuins is great for chasing and preventing escapes, but the Cold Steel doesn't help if they decline to auto-attack you.

If you're doing your job right, the Enemy AD Carry should be forced to auto-attack you. Your role as Mega Gnar beyond just jumping in and chaining R and W is to zone the Enemy Carries out of a fight.

Is Q or W better as first pick? I've been taking Q but it can be difficult to harrass with it through minions, but W needs time to proc so if they run of you miss trade damage.

It's the opposite for me. I normally do very well in lane (4-0 with over 100 cs) but once teamfights come, I can't get a kill at all and die left and right. The upside is that my team is taking advantage of my ults and zoning so my deaths are worth but you know..

gnar has a very strong lane but you have to be extremely careful with his E cooldown. It's longer than most gapcloser cooldowns and so champions like Riven or Renekton can bait it, retreat, and then engage again.

Gnar has a really easy time farming so just focus on that and get your advantage through CS. Try to keep your rage bar around 75% so that if you get engaged on you can transform and win the fight.
