Keep getting in games were it feels like I'm the only one watching the waves in late game.

My team will rush up mid while both side towers are about to take on 20 creeps. Do I use tp to pick up 40cs or join my team?

Take dat farm. 99% of the time (the 1% is when your team is ready and capable to end the game but only if you charge up mid with them right that second).

That's my normal course of action but sometimes I get flamed for not being in the group. I clear the lane give it a push and then go where I am needed. Always seems like people would rather get killed than not loose a tower and get free farm.

Let them flame in their ignorance. Massive creep waves are like free double kills in gold, plus if you ever DO ace the enemy team you'll already have lanes cleared so you can immediately take a tower or two.

The only downside is they'll usually go "see he finally joined us and we took two towers ... told that noob to stay with the group" having NO IDEA you're the one who made it possible.

I usually make the waves ramp up. If you clear the wave and kill the caster minions on the next wave, your own minion wave will become increasingly bigger and bigger to so big to be easily capable of taking a turret or even two sometimes. Too bad though that usually you need to keep the opponent occupied to prevent them from clearing that minion wave before it costs them anything.

Teams that lack the map awareness to see that side lanes need pushing before you can rush down mid are generally unable to notice if a teammate is missing in my experience. This leads to them engaging 4v5 thinking it is 5v5. Both choices will screw your chance of winning.

Part of winning games is about getting the creeps pushing and then timing fights so that you can use the wave to take objectives after winning. Fights where you do not get objectives afterwards are a waste of time unless you goal is to stall the game out.
