She actually has to be squshy to build the items that make the true damage beneficial...

item 3124 item 3142 item 3091 item 3078 Are the main items to make Attack speed on tanky champions and there are no tank stats on it. Can't have both at the same time. Especially in the case of Irelia since her True Damage doesn't scale with AD.

The more mixed and hybridized a champion's damage becomes: the more difficult they are to counter-build, but alternatively the more difficult it becomes for such champions to run wild with damage.

Basically: mixed damage encourages building tanky while still offering solid damage, without running into issues where "squishy" champions like Lux could hard-counter an entire fighter kit with 1 item like Zhonya's, proceeding to out-tank tanky DPS champions while also significantly out-ranging them.

Irelia is supposed to be tanky DPS, so she does true damage so she can build tanky and deal DPS.
