Why does riot knowingly make mages the worst class to play? lets take a look at each resource type

Resourceless Garen Riven Yasuo

-These champions dont require ANY resource at all to perform their abilities, they are only gated by cooldowns, No downsides at all

Fury Gnar Renekton Tryndamere -These champions dont use resources per se, but generate it by attacking or engaging constantly, gimmick varies from champion to champion, they are only gated when they cant engage anything without being in risk

Energy Akali LeeSin Zed -These champions dont have to worry alot about managing their resources, they are only gated when you mindlessly spam their abilities nonstop

Heal Aatrox Mordekaiser Vladimir -These champions use HP to cast their abilities, can be borderline suicidal at early game, isnt too much of a problem once you get lifesteal or will of the ancients

Mana Ahri Swain Kassadin -These champions use Mana to cast their abilities, they are gated early game and can only start truly being useful once you get Mana regen items

Opinions?

I feel like champs that use mana use it for a reason. Can you imagine if LB didn't use mana? edit: can you imagine most mana users without having a mana restriction?

Mana heavy champions are usually ones that need tis kind of gating in laning phase, i.e. if Lux used no mana she would just push anyone out of lane for free, and Ahri would just keep shoving with Q and healing of that. Manaless champions are either melee, so you can always fight them if they try to farm or trade you with their abilities, somewhat-outdated like Kennen, Kat or Morde, or they are Riot's beloved Zed.

In Tryndamere case I think Fury is actually worse than mana, as it makes his kit back-loaded where he needs to be in combat for ~8 seconds before he has access to a lot of his kit's power, where with mana you get to front-load everything in ~2 seconds and then peace out.

Rumble Rumble's Heat is also arguably worse than mana in a couple scenarios, as it forces you to maintain above 50% heat for empowered abilities/actually accessing his kit's power, where you need to carefully manage it so it doesn't go to 100% and silence him at an inopportune time while also making sure it's above 50% so he's not just outclassed by a mana-user with his kit.

And Aatrox 's health costs are pretty devastating through most of the game: for his ultimate's crazy potential to be realizied he needs to constantly harm himself to fill up his blood-well, and Blood Price's tripled-effectiveness below 50% HP forces optimal resource-management in his case to, like Rumble, operate at a 50% line. Except rather than a secondary resource it's total health you're hovering around 50% with, which is extremely risky.

I'd also place Health Costs as worse than mana in general. Sure you can argue just about everyone with HP costs has self-healing: but if you're comparing recourse systems in a void, health costs on champions with no self-healing would be substantially worse than mana costs.

I have no idea: Heal, I don't have experience with this.

Special: Fury, can realistically only be stacked by putting yourself in harms way, so if you are unable to stack it it will prevent you from using your abilities or from getting their full effect. While it might generate on its own its very slow so it basically functions as a cooldown that has the potential to be lowered by auto attacks, but its also lost on death so your ability is put on full cooldown on death. Is sometimes lost when not in combat. Can be worse or better then Resourceless but it depends on how its used.

Worst: Resourceless, kinda sucks because in order to be balanced they have to gut your numbers or kit to be allowed to function without terrorizing the rest of the champion roster. You are basically playing an underpowered champion.

Neutral: Energy, kinda like resourceless but with less gutting for the trade off that if you spam your abilities you will run out quickly and be unable to use them.

Best: Mana, because you are gated by a slowly refilling pool that can run dry quickly, your kit is allowed to be better then the other resources, allowing for a lot of power to be used either all at once or over time. Once you get your levels and items the mana gate is almost non-existant anymore and you are far more powerful for it.
