So I have completely fucking forgotten how to play against Garen

I play pretty infrequently, and I just for the life of me could not remember how someone who has mana to worry about is supposed to keep up with someone who (A) doesn't need to worry about resources at ALL (2) directly punishes you for NOT constantly poking him by gaining large amounts of free regeneration.

I out traded him for levles 2-3 but by then my mana was gone and there was no slowing the bastard down. Quite frankly, I find it incredibly annoying that while I have to spend mana to waveclear and trade he gets equal or better damage while NOT having resource management to keep him in check. So what's the trick to keeping him under control when he can go on forever and I can't?

garen late game is very bad, and he's easily kited. if you manage to just go even with him and cs then you'll eventually outscale him. if you're looking for a straight out counter then he can't touch a Gnar w/ item 3022 or even come close to him without being punished or killed.

as melee champion, just don't fight him until you have a jungler coming in. poking him is just a waste of time, preserve mana for csing.

Gnar could work. Thanks.

Garen doesn't directly punish you by gaining regen. His regen isn't based on his missing health, but on his max health, and only kicks in 6 seconds after not being hit. Might I recommend Vladimir or Swain for dealing with him? Vlad also doesn't have to worry about resources and can constantly poke Garen for coming anywhere near you. He runs at you? Simply press W and walk away. You can also build Rylai's and kite him to death.

Swain, on the other hand, again constantly pokes, and, if you farm well, doesn't need to worry about mana too much due to his passive restoring mana on minion kill. You have a slow and a snare for if he tries to run at you, and after 6, even if he does get the silence on you, you ult right before he hits and out-trade him while also healing any damage he tries to deal.

I'll have to try them next time, thanks. Still, it does kind of feel like his passive punishes you for not keeping the pressure on, since unless you keep him constantly poked at he just regenerates everthing a short time later. Eh.
