I tried the alternative mage start for ahri on 2 different champs
>
500g > 750g
15AP + 60hp + 50% mana regen + 4 mana/cs + 300hp in heals > 45AP + 120hp + 25% increased healing + 100 mana + 100% mana regen + 8 mana/cs
= 900g for 25AP and 300 mana + 20% of your mana back whenever you level up
= 900g for 30AP and 10% cdr
= 900g for 30AP 50% more mana regen + 100 flat mana + 562.5 hp regen over 45 seconds (12.5 bonus hp regen per second) + an additional 4 mana per cs + 60 more flat hp... I think that's everything lol
add in the meditation mastery and flat mana can contribute to mana regen as well.
assuming you are going to sell these items you would lose 750 - (160 + 245) = 345g overall but you can regain a part of this cost through the application of the items as well. Obviously there is some risk involved but I'm a midlaner, there's always a risk involved. Tohou Bullet Hell lane is always risky BUT something this build does I notice is that it gives you a whole damn lot of regen and stats. Its like building triforce pieces, just stats all over the place. But what's most important I noticed today is that this build is really good against something like zed and probably yasuo as well and all those other manaless assholes with tons of damage (looking at you
)
Not something I recommend for every game but If you ever complain that something counters everything in midlane look for this sort of alternative stuff. Later on I didn't really have enough power to be trying to all in zed (because mages should be trying to all in full on dedicated assassins) but I found myself with enough resources constantly that I could farm decently (or at least I had chances sadface) and countergank master yi repeatedly. I'd have done better that match but we had an afk, Illaoi support was a bad person who wouldn't get sightstone, and still getting used to the new ryze while vlad is uptop feeding him and never calling MIA. We won despite this since ryze was the only one who could deal with my damage midgame.
For a first try this went alright.
champs I think this will work well against

champs you should probably just use a more aggressive build against

Also I'm thinking people who play these champs may want to try this build even more than ahri

not too sure about the last part but know that ahri probably doesn't have the best synergy with this sort of thing but it seems to work pretty well at least for the earlier portions of the game. Midgame it worked out this time at least.
