1.5 years after the Malzahar rework the conclusion is:

That he lost his zone, teamfight potential and most damaging ability (W pool) and got it replaced by a useless passive that doesn't complement his kit and identity at all when you can just buy item 3102 now as first item.

Null Zone Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy for 5 seconds. The zone deals 6 / 6.5 / 7 / 7.5 / 8 % (+1% per 100 ability power) of the target's maximum Health as magic damage each second (damage to monsters is capped).

traded for

A 0.25 shield that is broken by 1 AA.

(IMO A passive that would suit Kassadin identity and be complementary to his kit and playstyle way more because he actually needs to get in your face to deal damage and then back out. But that is another discussion)

I am putting it as an example to show it doesn't fit Malzahar at all. He is a backline champ. It would fit a frontline champ way better.

How did you conclude this? His passive actually works well in his kit a lot considering his ult cant be popped by the first stray CC that get launched at him

I concluded this after getting over 500K mastery points on him and reaching D2 maining malz back in S5. Yes, sometimes you would get CC'ed at the same time you pressed R (Ahri Charm, TF card etc) and yes sometimes that sucked but I also felt it was sort of balanced and kept him in check as it offered some counterplay to a point and click ability. The key was not to rely on your ult but on your W instead. Build him as a tankmelter to have high impact in teamfights rather than stacking AP and pressing R (play like an assasin).

Yup.

A Malzahar that would give up participating in the majority of the teamfight just for that one ult to initiate was usually a bad Malz.

A shield that stops damage or cc which in turn provides a very safe laning phase would work well on a lot of things...

Thomas Jefferson put it best:

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

On another note:

Malzahar was a prophet that chose on his own to live his life for the Void.

His kit was full of individually strong spells you could freely use in any order of your choosing and still be effective.

The easily popped shield drained power from his spells and made him dependent on Voidlings, delayed combos, and team mates being there to cover his lack of damage.

Its not hard to see why a lot of mains were upset.

Alternatively, you could look at this cycle's pbe tweaks. Needless to say I'm going to be happy next patch if they don't revert it.
