what can I do if Riven gets ahead in lane?
Besides assume the fetal position and cry.
Besides assume the fetal position and cry.
If the rest of your team is ahead, fuck your KDA, don't let that bitch leave your lane. If your team isn't ahead, let the whore splitpush, and make something happen somewhere she isn't. If she disappears from top lane for an instant I want you vomiting pings all over your team telling them to stick their tails between their legs and piss off. And if you get the opportunity to gang bang that slut, fucking go for it. Show her soloqueue heroes don't exist.
If you can consistently manage this, congrats, you're in the LCS now.

SoloQ heroes do exist, and thank god for their existence. I'm sorry if I don't have blind faith in my teammates, but splitpushing has allowed me to secure victory many times. You can help and support your teammates in everyway short of actually playing the game for them, but if they lack skill or motivation to work together, then that's too bad, it's gg for you.
You can bring a horse water, but you can't make him drink.
So instead, you might as well leave the horse to die if he won't cooperate, and just buy a car instead so you can get to your destination (victory) without having to rely on anyone but yourself.
Personally, I find it a waste to default to a strategy like splitpushing in a team game. Don't get me wrong, it has its time and place, but it shouldn't be your go-to course of action.
Back on topic with the original thread, if you attempt to split against a fed Riven, you're going to have a bad time.
does she instaburst you despite the tower being there? yah, she kinda does that if you let her get a 10 AD lead on you if so, resume fetal position
build immediate armor like a chainvest or glacial shroud, give up farm and towerfarm instead, wait for your midlaner/jungler to roam top and get some cc on her.

Ok
Lube yourself up for the eventual shafting your team is going to give you when she starts roaming and they realize she's ahead.

Garen doesn't beat Riven. Not sure why people assume having a silence automatically means you beat Riven. Yes, he easily beats bad Rivens (he beats bad anythings anyways), but of equal skill the Riven ends up winning.
This is very, very wrong. It's not just the silence; nearly every single aspect of Garen puts Riven in the dumpster, with the possible exception of his ult (which is just an objectively weaker version of Riven's).
Passive - Probably the best health regen in the game right here, in contrast to Riven's complete lack of sustain (until she starts getting some decent lifesteal; and even then, if you're doing very well, you're going to be able to zone her easily, negating her ability to lifesteal off minions). Q - The movement speed boost isn't going to match Riven's hypermobility, but it does give you a decent shot at catching her compared to most champions. And of course, the silence makes Riven effectively inoperable for a short while; something not to be underestimated. It's not an auto-win, but it's very powerful. W - Appropriately timed you can easily and reliably negate a good portion of Riven's damage, which is her only advantage against you. This also ties into a larger point that (at least in my opinion) is the crux of why Garen shits all over Riven: a Garen laning against a Riven can start stacking armor straight away while still managing to dish out considerable damage, just from runes/masteries; more than enough, in fact, to annihilate a Riven, sometimes even from 100-0 (if you have Ignite, anyway). So while she's stuck rushing her AD items, you're busy getting Sunfire and Ninja Tabi. You negate her damage while she takes the full force of yours (intelligent shield usage notwithstanding). E - Tons of damage, nothing much to say here. R - Its only advantage over Riven's R is that it's point-and-click; Riven's ult, while it does give her a steroid on the side, can be dodged.
If the two are of equal skill, Garen will win. Of course, there are always players better than you, and a masterful Riven can run circles around Garen using superior mechanics (using the stun for hit and run attacks can become extremely oppressive if done correctly). There are a number of times where I've gotten my ass handed to me by Diamond and above Rivens; but, they were not matchups of equal skill.

R - Its only advantage over Riven's R is that it's point-and-click; Riven's ult, while it does give her a steroid on the side, can be dodged if you're on point enough/have Flash available.

It's already been long proven Riven wins on equal skill, Riven's win rate vs Garen is even 54%+, but please do go on about how Garen is a counter to Riven when he loses more games against her than he wins.
The fact you think his passive is good vs a champion that can keep it off just shows you don't really know anything about Garen and is assuming the person playing her is a brain dead Riven. During lane phase no competent Riven is going to allow a Garen to just walk up to them with Q and stand in his E, she has CC and a dash she can use while being silenced and not even stay in range of his spin.
I personally don't put a lot of stock in champion win rates; 54% is hardly out of the ordinary. If it was closer to 60% then maybe I'd concede the point, but no. I would hardly call that hard proof.
The fact that you think a halfway decent Garen would allow the enemy Riven to keep his passive disabled 100% of the time just shows you don't really know anything about Garen and are assuming the person playing him is brain-dead. Keep up the ad homs though.
Ninja edits. Likewise, no competent Garen is just going to walk up and Q and E a Riven when she has all her cooldowns available. Who's making assumptions about players being brain-dead, again? And what game are you playing where Riven is able to cast her stun/dashes while silenced?
Incidentally, you don't need to quote my entire post... it just pads out your response and creates a needlessly long comment chain.

54% against a champion that "counters" her is high, it's proof he doesn't counter her. A Garen has no choice in whether his passive is up or not, he doesn't decide when he takes damage or not, that is 100% on his opponent and not the person playing Garen. If he doesn't want to get hit and regen, he's forced to stay away, and he's melee, she's melee, so staying away means giving up farm, giving up farm means getting no gold.
If you wanted to bring up champions that actually beat Riven, should mention Quinn or Nasus, not Garen.
What ad homs are you referring to? I never attacked your character nor mentioned you specifically other than stating you didn't know what you were talking about because you're spreading false information, and even brought forth evidence that he doesn't win against her. If you're going to take my posts as insults, then I am not going to waste my time discussing anything with you since you're following the "you disagree with me so you're trolling" attitude.
For reference on champions who she beats/loses to: http://champion.gg/champion/Riven
With regard to winrate I simply disagree; I trust my own experience and the actual mechanics of the two champions more than a statistic.
Frankly, saying that Garen has zero influence on whether or not his passive is up is absurd. Yes, the most extreme solution is to simply hide well behind a minion wave. But realistically a Riven is not going to just jump on you every time she can in order to negate your passive, since you can easily punish her every single time she attempts it (e.g. Broken Wings cooldown: 13 seconds, Decisive Strike cooldown: 8 seconds).
Granted, there are certainly many more champions that can shut down Riven far more effectively/reliably... but in my opinion none of them are quite as fun. I certainly never meant to imply that Garen was Riven's hardest counter, or anything of that nature.
I find that the lane becomes rather stalemated. Not in the sense that nothing happens. But the same thing happens. If Garen acts firsts, Riven will W E away. If Riven acts first, Garen will dumpster. And Riven never acts first, so Garen is sad. Because he depends a lot on cocky players thinking he's easy.
Also, Garen Q is realistically 8+ seconds because it goes on CD after the effect.
Also, Valor 10> seconds, Ki Burst 11> Riven has more general ways to deter a fight if Garen tries something. But that's just me.

Carefully aiming your R, you can juke her R AoE by ulting behind her and you can actually damage her from the back, while her windslash travels forward in a cone that's really thin at the begginingThere are many other matchups that can make her life misserable simply by existing, but I either don't remember them or won't bother listing them all
Now if your matchup is rough.
Hope that hellps! Good luck on the rift my friend, cheers!
This deserves a lot more upvotes.
One of the reason Riven appears so oppressive is because she scales far better than anyone else with offensive items until the late game. Since most builds recommend players to snatch at least one or two damage items first to be impactful in early team fights, Riven innately has the advantage.
However, her strength comes with the downside of low sustain. If a player builds tank items early on, he or she will be able to out last Riven. In addition, being an AD caster, Riven only has kill potential when she has her abilities up. A champion can easily gain enough health and armor to survive her combo, which will leave her weak to retaliation or a gank from the jungle.
Time to rush

I take
on supports for granted :P. First item on Thresh even before boots built simoultaneously as my support item, opting for upgraded yellow trinket instead of sightstone. Mana to spam hooks shields and flays, CDR to spam hooks shields and flays even faster and the bautifull passive that will make whoever gets caught in your R cry. In Leona I buy
first then
second. It's also a really cool item for Sona too. Extra mana and cdr to spam QWE all day, and helps with her almost non existant survivability. Blitzcrank, Nautilus, Gragas, literally everything on top of your head-even karma-that can support WILL take advantage of an early
unless it's Soraka, Bard, Janna and Shen who deviate from the way a standard support works.
People tend to be way too close minded, obsessed with the so called "metagame" and fanboying over the LCS picks, thus forgetting that what mattes is what WE do in OUR games. Good luck out there friend! Cheers.

Build Armor and try to avoid stepping too far from turret.
Riven is an AD Caster, which means she is dependent on her abilities to do damage. If you can survive her combo or live long enough for you to run away, she cannot quickly follow up with more damage due to CDs. Capitalize on that time with a Jungle gank.
When you begin to lose even slightly against Riven, you should start to rush some defensive items. Riven scales so well with AD that there is no point in competing with her by buying more AD items. However, armor and health can severely hamper her killing potential. You may not be able to kill her, and might get zoned a bit, but it is better than feeding 6+ kills in lane to Riven.
Most AD Casters and Assassins gets out scaled late game. You can stall if you must.
If Riven gets so fed that she can kill you despite you building armor and farming under turret, it is 100% your fault - any champion has the capacity to do that if he or she is fed that much gold.
Build some armor and just waveclear. Get some wards on river so if she roams mid/jungle know where she is; if she leaves lane push hard and try to take her turret. If mid plays safe, you just got a free wave and turret/some damage on turret and Riven wasted time trying to gank a safe lane.
Beg your jungler to camp your lane
Beg your jungler to camp your lane
Double kill!
NOT THIS^
Try to stay under tower and wait for jungle to gank... usually works with anyone ahead in lane.
Your lane is done if she gets more than 1 kill over you. You have been shutdown. Do what you can to stay up beat til mid or late game and ks some kills from somewhere.
Good sir, you OBVIOUSLY haven't seen the aftermath of her combo... The one SHE has to deal with. :3
Thank you for asking how to improve rather than demanding Riven nerfs. It's a much better game mentality.
Honestly I don't think I lose to her that often, since I was actually pretty confident in picking Swain into her that game.
But she hit level 2 first and she suddenly hit me like a damn truck, and then killed me at level 3, then level 6 and it just got worse. I was so confused; I must have spent too much time harassing at level one, trying to zone from the get-go
I guess Renekton's going to be my go-to pick against her. Cloth 5 start is pretty nice on him.
Well...

Or about any AP champ with a good build and range.
Pretend top lane doesn't exist, roam mid and pray to Faker that your ganks work out and can bring you back into the game. Only return to lane to save towers.
leave lane and have your team rage at you

This face
you have a broken sword? That's cute, meet my AXE
you sit there under tower, and do your prayers that she doesn't put you in the list of things to f@#% up today.
watch the LCS see what they do when they get 2v1 top lane.
Try not to cry
Build armour and wait for her to get cocky and die trying to 1v5 like every riven when ahead.
Build defensively and cs when you can in lane. If the minions are pushed go jungle and get crabby. Be present somewhere else. This game attached below I was the opposite, I lost to Fiora as Riven lv 2 when she ran ignite over teleport. I jungled and waited for her to get bored and as she started to roam I followed and counter ganked. http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1777512267/35341176?tab=overview
get some armor and wait till late game to jump her ass and absolutely make her useless.
