Udyr is the biggest jungle bully in existence

Cloud273··20 votes·3,111 views

Everyone is so worried about Lee Sin, Rammus, etc. But Udyr is worse than all of these. His early game is good enough that no one can duel him. Late game he becomes so tanky that assassins and AP can't burst him down, and yet he still puts out decent damage. So...we have a duelist who also functions as a tank, has AOE, a stun, and a massive attack speed steroid. Lee Sin is fine the way he is. At least you outscale him late game. Udyr is strong at all points of the game no matter what kind of situation he's in. If you try to mob him he just kills the squishy. In a 1 v 1 he wins every time.

Being able to solo drag is a pretty big deal. A lot of other junglers can't do this until they've leveled up enough or with support from teammates.

He's almost impossible to catch lol.. he basically always fights on his own terms. Really good especially since a lot of other top laners/ junglers got nerfed.

yeah… .and really annoying since he's a great split pusher and is really tanky

Udyr has no ultimate... He has nothing to make a flashy play with. No burst, no gap closer (just a ms buff), and isn't hard to kite. With even before average warding you'll see him coming before he can get close enough to chase and stun you.

you forgot about loads of builds and strategies he has to overcome that my friend is a fan of udyr and he can speak hours about what kind of stuff can be countered with certain items strategies or summoner spells on udyr

udyr has a working way to owercome anything the only reason that he sucks is because ppl literaly fail to play him and either let their team feed while they cant stack fast, or they cant gank and still get useless and the reason i dont play him is because i dont have the skinn and the base literaly looks like a crap (yeah and i wont spend so much cash on this skinn)

if you will find a good udyr he will win, just like that, he will get items that make his weaknesses unexploitable while he will exploit his insane stats

True story

Udyr has an ability for everything. That is why he has no ultimate. Nothing goes to waste on him and the reason he has no real gapcloser is because his Bear Stance gives him a LOT of movement speed and extends his basic attacks range extremely slightly for the stun attack. If Udyr got a gap closer, he would be uncatchable. It would also really not fit in with his kit since he is more about enhanced basic attacks and basic attack effects than anything. Also, he has 4 abilities that equal an ultimate and more truely.

Tiger Stance- Biggest AD Burst in the game. It causes your next basic attack to deal up to 230 (+160% AD) physical damage over 2 seconds and then 115% of your attack damage from the persistent effect and the basic attack. Not stopping there, it also gives a pretty decent attack speed boost for a moderate duration that stacks with his passive for a lot of damage.

Turtle Stance- A spammy shield that also gives him a lot of lifesteal ever since the overall lifesteal nerf. Effectively, with some ability power, Udyr becomes a super tank with sustain with this ability. The ability power also benefits his Pheonix Stance as well and the lifesteal makes him an extreme wall during the laning phase if you choose to lane Udyr. It also provides him with his jungle sustain.

Bear Stance- Udyr's butter on toast, Bear Stance allows Udyr to gain an extremely large movement speed boost for a decent duration and adds a stun to his first basic attack that has a decently short immunity time in a chase or extended duel. It's so simple yet so satisfying.

Pheonix Stance- This is the main reason Udyr is known for his wave clear. Every third basic attack he unleashes a cone of fire that deals damage equivalent to a spell cast that can be done multiple times. Not only that, it also causes rings of flame to be unleashed from Udyr around him to quickly deal damage to enemies around Udyr, dealing once again, a lot of damage.

Udyr can then combo these abilities together to stack his passive to give him bonus movement and attack speed. He can start with a Turtle Stance to block the initial burst before switching to Bear Stance to run in and perform the stun on his opponent. Then he can activate Tiger Form to apply the damage over time and gain the attack speed while also applying some increased damage basic attacks while he waits for the 2 second global cool down. He can then activate Phenoix Form to make use of his huge attack speed boost from his passive and Tiger Stance (100% boost at Tiger Level 5) to further increase the amount of fire cones he can create with his Phenoix Stance. The bonus movement speed from Monkey's Agility also allows him to keep in range of his enemy to deal damage with his rings of fire. This amounts to a huge amount of damage when combined with some items like Trinity Force and Wit's End.

(also, it is impossible to ward off every single gank route for a jungler, there will always be a way too gank an enemy)

Brownie Loco2 votes

you cant stack passives. its the actives that may stack.

and as you have a 2 seconds cooldown for all your abilities each time you use one, and the effects are always about 5 seconds, then you can have an active last only 3 seconds while using another ability.

also the active on bear is even shorter.

those seconds count. and changing abilities forces a brief pseudostun on him.

finally, you cant really build lots of hybrid damage AND tank. all your abilities descriptions cant be working together as "expected". also, you only have 18 points, not 20, so you cant max all abilities.

He may be alot of what you said, but if your calling him OP. Your sadly mistaken.

He is one of the easiest champions to kite late game, by far. He's one of those champions that can rip someone apart, but getting to that target isn't easy unless their team is lacking in any form of CC or kiting potential. Only thing he can really do around the 25 minute mark is split push quite well.

He's kiteable, but not too easy to kite, you basically need hard cc or a snare because slows barely phase him (whenever I played him that is, thresh' 99% slow would work). Singed/trundle/morde/Sion/darius/nocturne etc. are all way easier to kite. While it's true Udyr's only gapcloser is movespeed, the sheer amount he gets basically invalidates slows (especially if you're building boots of swiftness, which isn't a bad plan if you're being kited by slows). An exception for when Nocturne has his ult up against characters with no dash.

Edit: not saying he's grossly op, and he apparently sucks in 5v5challenger or we'd see him in worlds, but at least in soloqueue I rarely see one lose. I do see Udyrs win teamfights with ease though, you say his teamfighting sucks because he's easy to kite, while that may be true 1vX, he has a team and if they're halfway competent udyr will most likely get free reign. So while he may not be op, he is definitely on the strong side/would survive some minor nerfs. (Keyword is MINOR) But they're not really needed until he sees more play.

Having mained Udyr before for over 200 games I can attest that his kit is quite strong even in teamfights....

If he can catch you.

Cuoco Diavolo5 votes

so for the people saying that he has easy kitability you're right their are two champs in league with this kind of kit and the reason they hurt so much if they catch you is because that's their reward for catching someone the other champ like this is trundle him and udyr have probably the scariest melee dueling in the game with their stat modifiers so if you let them catch you well sucks to be you

and then you realize udyr has the smallest gapcloser in the game and can't jump over the walls twice for easy escapes. And btw, lee sin is far from bad late game.

Spacesuit Spiff4 votes

Udyr has been nerfed in the most ridiculous way possible: ever since Trick became a thing, pick him in soloq and your team will despair and feed even if you have 5 assists by 10 mins and go SotAG.

For real though, he's a splitpush champion in a game where 95% of the playerbase don't know how to do a headcount before engaging a teamfight (don't believe me? people still make this mistake all the time in plat). You're going to end up unable to splitpush because ARAM is the only strategy soloq can handle, and not contribute much in teamfights, let alone carry.

Brownie Loco2 votes

and trick himself is always saying "voli and udyr are shitty champs.. i only play em coz i like em a lot.. but they are NOT good"

only time i remember udyr being a real thing was with the first iteration of the feral flare (and he still had early mana problems so you had to go madstone to make it really work)

BrickcityBryant4 votes

yes he's a strong duelist, because he can be kited for days before he gets 4-5 points in bear stance, his damage falls off really hard if he builds tank, he is squishy if he builds damage which means you can just kite and burst him... he only wins 1v1s early game, after that he can be beat... are people seriously complaining about udyr...

insaiyanbacca3 votes

unfortunately he gets wrecked by almost every top laner designed for dueling insert olaf, tryndamere, wukong oh and then theres voli or maokai who just laughs at him you did half of voli's hp thats nice hes got full hp again oh you tried to stun olaf thats nice you tried to kill tryndamere to bad. uh oh where did wukong go? oh im dead now. and lastly maokai who he actually cant hurt after lvl 6. in conclusion there are so many champs that can easily fight and take down udyr that are melee not to mention the ranged. an honorable mention is also jax if played correctly. if i sound rude i honestly don't mean to its just people thinking udyr is really powerful i think are incorrect, also half of the champs mentioned not only are able to beat udyr in a fight but are powerful in teamfights to.

Poldy Scarecrow2 votes

Thanks for saying you didn't mean to be rude. I easily misinterpreted most of the post but no worries.

I respect your opinion but wukong isn't a duelist and can't straight up 1v1 udyr on even terms (gold/kills/ etc). He'd have to be grossly fed to do so.

Most people agree that Olaf is a shadow of his former self and I think he'd los ein an extended trade.

Voli is ridiculous 1 v 1 so he prob can win and idk abt mao.

insaiyanbacca1 votes

i actually wasnt playing when olaf was i guess what people consider powerful but i consider the fact that i can still go 4/0 in lane and take down the tower in 7 minutes strong, but yeah after typing out the entire thing i realized i could sound rude and i didnt want to lol. and only reason i say mao is because of his natural tankyness and if udyr is gonna switch stances a bunch during the fight mao will keep healing from his passive while mao will just throw damage onto udyr, although i havent seen many good udyrs to actually try these theories on.

PatMcGroyn3 votes

Tiger Udyr is a ridiculously strong duelist, but can't farm as fast as Pheonix. Especially if he gets the jump on you, he can shit on pretty much any jungler for sure.

Otherwise, I think Lee still takes the cake as far as early jungle bullies go.

Meep Man4 votes

Definitely unfortunately since he is also a good ganker. It's because Lee Sin's damage is too high for no reason (For an example, his Q deals in total 340 (+180% bonus AD) (+8% of the target's missing health) physical damage on a 7 second cool down with excellent range). He also deals mixed damage with his E as well and has a shield with sustain as well as a disengage and finisher in one move. Lee Sin is everything an Assassin could ask for with tankiness.

early tho, all u gotta do is ward and catch him out.

Direwolfiez3 votes

I usually play squishies, like Lux, Ez and Jinx, and I've never really found Udyr to be much of a problem to me, since as long as I can kite/CC him he can't touch me. Sure, he's scary as hell if he gets to you, but getting to you is the hard part.

YMe2 votes

Udyr can feed, not help his team, give zero ganks, BUT still win games by himself very easily with his hit and run split pushing and objective control.

Raja Chachki3 votes

If there is EVER an Udyr that doesn't take objective ON HIS OWN, I will smash my face into my keyboard.

4nth0l0gy2 votes

He's also a horrendously bad teamfighter and ganker. He is king of the jungle, this is true, but that's about it.

junglerboy162 votes

Yeah, pick a bunch of lane bullies, punish him for his weak early game gank presence, and win before he gets to late game. Same tactics as against a Yi, except you have to be better at doing it right. He could probably handle getting nerfed though.

MPendragon2 votes

While I agree that Udyr has an extremely powerful kit, he doesn't do a damn thing against my Amumu.

Also, LeBlanc can combo him down from full health without even using all of her abilities.

I would probably suggest having some global presence from your teammates to deal with his movespeed harass.

For example, I think Shen would be a pretty good comrad to have against Udyr. Potentially Warwick as well, as he has the ability to chase him down.

Ryvaku1 votes

Well if he is used correctly I would agree with you, but I still see other main junglers just as annoying. It could be his Turtle stance that allows him to have so much sustain in lane to live most teamfights if people are targeting him. I see Udyr more of a objective targeting champ overall.

AloneInTheCrowd1 votes

nerf now

DaSneakyGit1 votes

I'm not going to say I'm a pro Udyr at all or that he's UP, but really, if you can't see an Udyr coming a mile away and move to safety, you deserved to get ganked.

Level 1 Bear form's MS increase is nothing to get excited about, only after getting level 3/4 in Bear form do you really notice a MS that is threatening and no Udyr is getting that high in Bear form for quite awhile in the game.

Tiger stance is pathetic unless you build damage and if you build damage, you get melted. Tiger stance is so weak now compared to what it used to be.

Turtle is still turtle, the loss of mana replenish doesn't really affect his gameplay.

Phoenix seems to be the only viable path these days(and honestly it pretty much always was), which pretty much forces you to only Jungle as using Phoenix in a lane would probably not work too hot.

Udyr is a jack of all trades but master of none, yet he seems to only be able to build tank if he wants to win. I don't recall seeing an Udyr building damage and winning in a loooong time(granted I have been away from the game for a long time as well).

Udyr Jungle's well but honestly that's about all I see, he's not some unstoppable team fight monster AoE stunning or snaring etc and he doesn't melt people either. He's just there doing things. I can see the case of him being a decent splitpusher but that's hardly a thing that he does the best, let alone being the only one who can do it. Also splitpushing relies on your team to be able to handle 4v5 fights if the other team decides to make a run for the nexus in middle.

AbsoluteSadman1 votes

i think the most solid proof we have is the game i played where the udyr was 9/2....he could solo turrets ;~;

Lt Cuddles1 votes

Season 5 should nullify that, as turrets get an armor an MR boost when your minions aren't near it, items do not effect turret bonuses, last time I checked, but don't quote me.

he has a bad teamfight and his lategame damage is pretty meh unless he builds a lot of it, in which case he's really easy to kill.

the only difficult thing about udyr after the early game (which i do agree his is strong) is watching for backdoor plays. just ward well and use your TP wisely. And buy some damn homeguards!
