Are we ever going to address creep block?

Cloud273··158 votes·14,677 views

Since we haven't talked about this in a while, I thought I should bring this up again. Yes this still happens and it's still just as obnoxious as ever. I can't tell you how many times I've missed a kill because MY OWN creeps block me while I try to chase someone. Aren't these minions supposed to be on MY side? I can understand if the enemy minions block you, but when your own minions do it it's just sad

oh you mean when your champ tries 4X to go around a minion but the minion moves slightly and resets your pathing so instead of tanking 1 tower shot like you planned you eat 4 and have to burn flash to get out... yeah ....

I mean minion AI is already pretty shitty to begin with. AA minion half the minion wave aggros you for no reason even though there's plenty of other minions in front. About to kill a minion then your cannon creep swaps targets to kill it then pops back to what it was attacking. Enemy AAs you and your wave smack them 2-3 times before they stop and just stand still, their minion wave will hunt you down and AA you 4-5 times.

About to pull someone. Nope fucking hero melee minion dives out of the brawl for literally no reason (nothing dies nothing gets hit to change aggro it just decides to wander off for absolutely no reason) and gets hooked.

I swear its like they are supposed to have a guidebook and choose to only loosely follow it. "Rules are more like guidelines"

"Minions are temporarily disabled due to a bug"

I absolutely feel the same way. This actually happened last night. Was poking an enemy ADC as Naut, soaking a bit of damage, no big deal, then when I turn around to get back behind my wave, Naut flips out and starts turning every which way trying to path around the minions. Feelz. Bad.

But then I got to thinking for a second and figured, well, that's part of the cost/benefit of playing the way I did. I went for the poke through a minion wave, and got caught because of it. There's the potential for unique item choices and summoner spell choices based on these lil creepy deepies and what you know about how they move. Once I got to thinking about it as a mechanic in the game the same as bushes, turrets, etc, I got more comfortable with it.

Still. Getting destroyed because of those little hooded jerks makes me feel like the bronzie that I am.

Maybe if it was more clear that an interaction like that is consistent then maybe you could do with not even changing it at all so people wouldn't blame it on a bug or "hax" or something

Copy and pasting from my reply below (I started answering from the bottom of the comments lel)

"So it looks like what you might be looking for is just clarity? I back that up. But let me present a bit of a counter-argument for the sake of friendly discourse.

I fail flash against walls all the time. I suck at it. I just do. It's a great shame and I am made fun of for it (but I always flash my masteries to salve those piping hot burns, afterwards.) Part of the skill of great players I watch, is that they just know those distances over walls. There's no indicator that let's them in on the secret, they learned it through trial and error, and know when it's a risk and when it's not.

I could see where that logic applies to minion block. An average player might not know exactly when it's safe to go through a wave for fear of being blocked, but a pro might know that 'Okay, it's very clear that there's a gap in the wave here, or that I should be safe and simply go around and soak the extra damage as part of that cost of the guarantee that I won't be blocked and killed.'"

SuperLuigiLXIV5 votes

I've seen Dyrus get reamed by his own minions on stream before, because he slips through a gap to attack, but the minions shift themselves and the gap is no longer there when he needs to retreat.

I'm not saying creep block shouldn't exist, but it's way too unforgiving right now and FRIENDLY creeps should absolutely never trap you under a tower in any circumstance.

Melledoneus18 votes

Don't you think champions with bigger models should... you know... shove them?

Doozku10 votes

Couldn't you guys at least make it standard when this happens. It almost always feels bullshit when the champion's path finding bugs out on a minion. Can you guys make it more like in dots where there is creep block but it is much more predictable and less buggy feeling.

Nameless Voice17 votes

Having to consider that your minions are in the way and that walking around them might take a little longer? Okay.

Having to consider that your champion's pathfinding code might bug out and get you stuck in the minions, unable to move for several seconds? No. That's a bug and needs to be fixed.

TheSingularity21 votes

Bring in an item for every class that ignores unit collision then "There's the potential for unique item choices "

Someone getting away due to minion block would've gotten away regardless as you'd have to walk around the wave.

Minion block isn't interesting. It is inconsistent and in most cases purely retarded as you spin around on the spot cos of 1 minion touching you after flashing

Fisher No Chains10 votes

Agreed. Right now we only have 1 summoner spell (ghost), 1 item (Phantom Dancer) and some abilities like Fizz's passive that interact with units collision. Give us some more stuff like that.

Earl Eulrich7 votes

and then you think again and ask yourself why primarily melees do have to go through such trouble and range is such a big advantage in about any thinkable circumstance in this game...

Spoofghoul5 votes

ever got stuck in a minion wave

like for 30 seconds and then you just decide to recall cos it's probably faster then waiting another minute

i know i have resorted to recalling or teleporting on occasion because i got stuck in a minion

it's really annoying lol

like placing a pink ward in someone's face when you fight him and he gets stuck and can't move, yea i abuse these things :P so there is an upside to it haha

GayFluffyUnicorn6 votes

Man sorry i have to say that: Yes it would be a nice mechanic and could even be used to outplay opponents IF IF IF IF it would be clear how it works. The coding is just shit, sorry. I can't count how many CS i missed on gangplank when he suddenly walks in circles instead of going to the minion and later on when the wave is at the EXACT SAME POSITION and i go for THE SAME MINION also using the same path i used before he walks towards it and kills it. As long as it stays this clunky it should entirely be removed or be worked on FAST. It's really annoying. Same with being unable to follow up a gank because your champion suddenly stops to move.

SociopathFriend5 votes

Personally I think a cool item for Supports would be one that lets you redirect minion agro to an enemy champion.

Dude.

Yes.

I have no problem with minion block whatsoever. I just have a problem with how extremely random it feels sometimes. I run after an enemy or just a cs, but then there one minion in my way and the character just bugs out and is stuttering in the minion for 2 seconds. This is the kind of stuff I have a problem with. Not being blocked by the minion or my wave, that's an important part of the game and you need to play around it, but these really random things where single minions make your character stutter for way too long or where you just get caught by 2 minions and suddenly you can't move.

I just want to see the pathing in combination with minions work more reliably and predictable, so I can play around minions without having to worry about these random things happening. This is a part I like about Dota, you can block your creeps and they can block you, but the way it works there makes it way easier to have a clear setting for how you can and will interact with them. The way minions somehow move around champs in League might be part of the problem here, since they sometimes block you and sometimes they'll just move for you.

Clearity about minion block and minion interaction is all I want.

Hellioning2 votes

I don't think anyone cares about getting stuck in waves. They care about getting stuck in a couple of minions that you should by all accounts go around, but the pathfinding freaks out and gets you stuck for a couple of second.

Puppet33r4 votes

Well the problem is that it's very random. And there's no way to tell when your own minions will decide to block you from getting the kill or block your way away from the enemy turret after you make a dive. Don't justify it as part of meaningful gameplay decisions until you fix it by either giving minion hitboxes some subtle indicators or improving pathfinding.

RiotRiot TreblMuffin3 votes

Absolutely not justifying it, just giving the mentality I try to apply for myself so that I don't break another keyboard. They are expensive.

And so very very frail...

BLACK REALM GOD2 votes

and hence why i prefer ghost over flash. and when people ask "what the deuce why do you have phantom dancer on karthus?" i go... " i call it creep dancer."

but... knowing riot i'll eventually get reported an banned for that so i just dont play much anymore.

waiting on the day when some LCS pro starts using it.

RiotRiot TreblMuffin2 votes

Dude, exactly! Ghost seems to be undervalued, but I know me a Darius main who swears by it. There's nothing more horrifying than being pushed up on a Darius and then seeing him pop ghost with swifties and warmogs and DESTROY you through your own minion wave.

Vekkna2 votes

The moment it wasn't undervalued it got nerfed.

Kingnewgameplus1 votes

On a side note how do you poke as naut? E I guess but it isn't exactly a spell known for its range.

RiotRiot TreblMuffin2 votes

To me, poking as someone like Nautilus isn't about hitting and not getting hit back. You're there to absorb damage. So you give a friendly auto to their supp or adc, soak a bit of damage, your adc is able to get in a few hits, and with your shield and health you should consider it successful. I do, normally.

TotalJerk2 votes

That sounds like trading, not poking.

idontgiveabother10 votes

I hope they do, its really, REALLY, annoying when you're playing a melee champ and you get stuck or spasm trying to path around a wall of minions to get the cs you want. Then you miss half the wave and you go home sad.

Fluffeh10 votes

i wouldnt mind creepblock if pathing wasnt so poor. The amount of times ive died because im wiggling in the creep wave is ridiculous

it gets worse every patch

Nonsense, its nowhere near as bad as it was at the start of last season when they first changed it.

Yes! that was hilarious

Play Malphite in lane a couple times.

Solitair6 votes

NOthing like playing a champion with a big model, and a cruelly short auto range through a minion wave.

Blåbæret7 votes

I probably have 100+ deaths from creep block. It's so freaking stupid.

Fondling Gems6 votes

I like minion block. It adds an element to the game that can be played around and that can be used to your advantage.

Legacy Hydralpha14 votes

How would you use it to your advantage? Stand far away from your minions and hope the enemy gets stuck in their own wave?

Fondling Gems6 votes

I know that if I am vs a melee champion I can get them to jump on me while I stand on the edge of my minions, this causes the minions to aggro on them right as I walk out of them getting the melee champion trapped. You can also heavily play around minions during ganks, often I will circle around the minions rather than running straight for my turret because the minions will cluster around them, deal damage, and slow them down.

You can also control you minion waves after the first to slow them down or cause the wave to push either way or freeze. If the enemy is trying to freeze for example I can push one of my caster minions around, stopping them from outputting the same amount of damage and getting to wave to start pushing towards me.

There are a lot of mechanics available due to creep block that one can play around.

I know it is the unpopular opinion but creep block is a really useful tool that I enjoy greatly. Think about whenever the enemy jungler is ganking as your minions are coming into lane. You can walk behind the line of minions and if they try to follow the minions will cluster around them and leave them open to retaliation. If a Lee Sin could just walk through the minion line to Q you then minions wouldn't do much at all and players would lose an expression of skill from the game, because creep manipulation is a skill.

Legacy Hydralpha7 votes

I see where you're coming from, but the minion block I'm tending to refer to is when you're completely stuck by your minions or the enemy's minions. Having minions at least hinder enemies movement will help, but being unmovable is just unfun to deal with. I think a good way to make the situation work is to allow enemies to push past their own minions, while still being hindered by enemy minions. Now people won't be trapped in a life-or-death situation by their own minions, and people can still manipulate their minions to evade enemy champions and their damage.

Fondling Gems5 votes

I think that is a fair request.

Creep block happens to me like once every 40 games. It is fine. It is such a minor thing the last time they tried to fix it they made it 10 times worst. There are plenty of other things to fix creep block is hardly a problem

You play exclusively bot games, and haven't played in 12 days. There are literally no problems you should be able to identify during lane phase.

the riot game history i super buggy ive seen people that have supposedly only played one game ever but they are leval thirty. and there is no reason to be so mean to a new player this is why everybody thinks league is just a toxic hellhole

Around999People3 votes

This happens how often? Once every 2 years or so per player? If it happens often you're doing something wrong. Yes, it does happen, maybe more than every 2 years. But it's not a common issue, hell, it makes sense or passive's that let you go through minions wouldn't be a thing

Papa Andrei16 votes

For everyone melee and who has a larger than average model size, it is a huge Issue

Sraeg20133 votes

Bah, it happens to me with ranged champion with average model size too.
