Why Would Anyone Pick A Tank In The Toplane?

with item 3068 dealing half damage to champions and item 3075 losing all of its damage why would anyone pick a tank in the toplane? pro players do not even consider picking Poppy in pro play,a champion that was picked for her disengaging and diving abilities. Why would anyone pick her in solo queue?

It's not sunfires damage that bothers me, it's the low range for waveclear.

I am 100% convinced that the tank update happened because someone at the office said "Hey, worlds is coming up in a few months, shouldn't screw over the dominant tank champions (which will screw the less dominant ones as well) by overbuffing ADCs while nerfing the shit out of their itemization? Tanks are boring in pro play, let's do that"

Well they arent wrong hehe xd Also Maokai is top tier now

Tanks are slowly being killed off ever since the tank update several patches ago. Riot really needs to decide if they want tanks in the game or not.

Honestly, it just seems like they don't want tanks in top-lane.

Jungle and support tanks aren't actually doing that poorly.

Though I feel that tanks designed for top lane are going to have problems soon.

I don't want Sion balance around support.

Honestly, Sion is probably one of the few tanks who can actually survive top-lane in the current meta (provided you aren't against Fiora, Darius or Riven).

His kit is innately powerful, his builds (and skill order) are versatile enough to adapt and he can handle ranged top-laners.

They are last pick and the team has 4 carries so far?

Because some people are tired of playing second fiddle; either behind as a support or overrun in the jungle. Too bad tanks have been forcefully gimped for the last couple years.

Maybe because the tank is meant to have carries to back them up? The change to thornmail is good. If you are picking a tank wanting to do damage to carries then there is something wrong with you to begin with. You get thornmail so when team fights come around, the damage from your carries can stick instead of the enemy just lifestealing off of your increased tank health bar. If you want to do damage then pick a damage dealer and get over the fact that your damage is being nerfed in exchange for being a better team player.

But the window should be bigger so Tank players don't inherently climb slower because they need their team to follow up on good engages. Tanks need to be tanky enough to compensate for slow carry reactionspeed, basically. Or deal enough damage on their own. Preferably a little of both.

old thornmail didnt give hp, or cold steel now did it

Why is that relevant? Adc's can infinitely sustain off of you even better than before. The item also costs a ton more than old thorn mail, yet old thornmail for new thornmail price would still be better.

Old Thornmail was such an essential part of playing tanks before this patch? Anyways the changes to it make it much stronger.

You pick tanks for the same reason you always picked tanks: you're better in a teamfight than any other option.

i have mained maokai top lane for going on 3 seasons. just played it in my last game

i got wrecked by a maokai top recently. MY anus was not prepared for that amount of damage. I didnt even get hit my saplings from brushes and still got rekt.

i just wrecked an over aggressive renekton in lane...

he took 18 in resolve , he had grasp he took TP

it was too easy to start cloth and pots and even with the ganks by kha, and kass he didnt kill me

i made a tp play bot side and got a kill n two asst and it was done from there

my items were item 3001 item 3068 item 3047 item 3151 item 3024 building into item 3025

If youre picking a tank to do damage you're doing it wrong. Basically you're bitching about a tank doing less damage

Lovelle II1 votes

Damage is everything in LoL though. Hell, even in most MMOs the tanks/supports that deal the most damage tend to be the best picks of their class.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Honestly, the current top-lane meta isn't helping tanks either. The most common top-laners: Riven Renekton Fiora Jax Darius

They are (largely) dominant laners and/or powerful splitpushers.

If you pick a tank into them, you are resigning yourself to a shitty laning phase and will likely be forced to counter their splitpusher rather than teamfight.

Ralanr1 votes

Sadly my Sion jungle doesn't move fast enough so I'm stuck dealing with top. God I love a splitpush top laner meta.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Have you tried playing Sion mid-lane?

His ultimate is great for roaming, his waveclear/poke are rather good and his opponents would typically lack durability/sustain.

Ralanr1 votes

I'm been tempted. Most midlaners have more poke than top laners so I have to deal with more harass.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Honestly, it shouldn't be that bad; Sion's poke/waveclear is rather powerful and his innate sustain would outclass the majority of his opponents.

Personally, I'd recommend trying the following setup:

  • Runes:

  • Quints: Precision

  • Marks: Precision

  • Seals: Armor (flat/scaling) or Health (scaling)

  • Glyphs: MR (flat/scaling)

  • Masteries:

  • Ferocity: 0

  • Cunning: 18 (Thunderlord's Decree, Precision, Meditation)

  • Resolve: 12 (Perseverance)

  • Starting Items:

  • Option 1: Corrupting Potion

  • Option 2: Doran's Ring + 2 Health Potions

Your health and mana sustain would let you outlast most opponents during the laning phase. Your high base damage combined with the flat armor/magic penetration (and TLD) would let you chunk your opponents rather harshly and they wouldn't have the sustain to heal it back up.

I'll try it out later. I don't like going TLD on Sion but since runes are going soon I might as well.
