Purchasable Missions.
I just wanted to say that purchasable missions are a step towards the wrong direction, missions are supposed to be something rewarding consistent players and not something associated with cosmetics and in game purchases.

I actually have no problems with the 3 mission chains that were purchasable - that was understandable and fine by me.
What I DID have a problem with was purchasable daily missions. The standard for daily missions has been set for years now, and that standard is that they're free, they give you currency at an incredibly slow pace, but eventually you can get a little something for your dedication. Locking them behind a paywall is a shit thing to do, because daily missions on a limited event means that the purchase will lose value every single day you don't buy it. It's a terrible business model, and I'm not sure why Riot did it.
"I'm not sure why Riot did it" Yeah I think we can all figure out that one. When you are number one you don't have to worry about pleasing customers as much to keep in business. All about that $$$.
This is exactly what I take issue with, as well. For free you can get a total of 200 tickets. That's it. Not even enough to get one of everything. Dailies should be free. Missions? Sure, charge for those. But dailies is so pay to win and not to mention, rediculously expensive.
I'm eager for the star guardian event, but I'm worried that it's going to be just as pay to win as this one, I'm hoping enough people refused to buy the missions/dailies compared with the other buy this to get an edge in rewards that were in the previous events to show that riot that this practise is a failure.
It's like buying armor and weapons in games, and having them 10x more powerful than free to play end game gear.
You get free stuff without paying for anything. 1 Mega Orb/ 1 Great Orb and the Icon/ 2 Good orbs for playing a game. You are not entitled to the free stuff, and this is how Riot makes their money. And no, paying for missions that give cosmetics are not anything like Pay-to-win Armor/Weapons.
But the content you will be paying for - the daily missions - are one of the biggest shams I've seen in a FTP game ever. Daily missions at current have a precedent in the industry as being free, slow currency for things. The fact that this one is A) limited in time, and B) locked behind a paywall means that if you do pay to unlock them, you have lost intrinsic value of the product if you did not buy it on day one.
Given that this event launched on a Thursday, it's a fairly safe assumption that a lot of people lost value on the daily missions due to paydays being on Fridays.
Daily missions for timed events locked behind a price value is a sham. It's a straight up money hungry sham. It's regardless of the fact that they gave us free content already - the principle of this matter is that this is not OK. Furthermore, the event is scheduled to last until the 24th - it began on the 10th. That's 15 days total, and with the daily missions, that's 150 tickets. That's LESS than the 2 mission chains you get for free, and here we are having to pay for it. At the very least it should have been the reverse, and then it at least wouldn't have given the appearance that Riot is blatantly fishing for money, because it would have followed the formulas that every other FTP game follows and is an expected norm.
Who said you're entitled to Missions at all? You got missions to get something free, why is that not enough? Yes, congrat's you figured it out! Riot wants to make money, they are a business.
regardless of the fact that they gave us free content
Then stop crying. If you don't want to waste money on a game, good for you, but you got free stuff.
His point is: You lose value on something that will always cost the same the longer you wait, it's punishing you for being prudent in a similar way to preorders
Aren't you already punished by arriving to an event late? If you're up to date on the game, than it's no problem either way.
And yeah, the lesser expense option yield less value. They want you to buy the 15 dollar, because if you arrive late, that's your best value. You not getting more cosmetics is not a punishment, you're just playing the base game. If you're aware of current events, and show up early, you get more value.
It's like getting a free shirt for showing up early at a concert. Others are not getting punished for showing up late, it's others getting rewarded for showing up early.
You're not understanding.
The missions you buy unlock DAILY missions, so basically if you buy the missions day 1, and do them every day, you profit and get the maximum number of tickets.
But if you buy them, for instance, 3 days before the event ends, its a complete sham and you got nothing of value to what you've spent, since you only get 3 daily missions instead of 14 (?) total.
No I get it. I just think you'd be dumb to buy something labeled "Daily Mission" 3 days before an event ends.
Daily missions at current have a precedent in the industry as being free, slow currency for things.
You mean like First-Win-of-the-Day? We've had that for years.
Yes, but it never costed money, it was a nice reward mobas and other games used to keep you coming back.
Missions/quest in various games offer bonuses just for completing them, but they were never impactful bonuses until you add up how much you've gotten in say, a week's worth. It was a nice little reward for trying to complete something you probably wouldn't do (like on smite, getting rewarded for playing something different like a mage or roman).
In league, now we've set the standard missions are limited time offers for limited content (icons so far) and with limited time purchasable bonus missions that also offer limited time content (that gold arcade icon).
Yes, but it never costed money,
And it still doesn't cost money. Riot has spoiled ya'll.
Yes that's a problem, I wouldn't have any problem with it if it was like in previous event:
Free? 10 tokens a day; Bought pass? 20 tokens a day;
It's same thing, it loses value over time, but like, players still get SOMETHING even without paying, just playing at least one game a day (or however it takes to get a win).
Exactly. This whole issue is a matter of how this feels as a consumer and a player. It feels better to have daily missions for free as something to keep you invested in the event. It feels like shit if that daily mission is something you have to pay for.
I'd play LoL few games a day just to get a win for those 10 tokens, but now I just spammed through free missions and got bored of it and didn't even log into it for a few days.
And while I am not playing the game, I am not thinking about wasting money on skins, and all the time I am not thinking about wasting money on LoL, riot is going to earn less and less from me, but shhh, don't tell them.
The daily missions? You mean the win 1 game for 10 tickets? for 14 days that's 140 tickets, it's not like it gave a huge difference. Would be nice to have that free though, since there's a bunch of other rewards you get (4 legacy skins minimum if you get only the mega orbs + one baron icon)
As a F2P, I don't mind really. Whatever keeps the money flowing for Rito to keep this game fresh and free for me. I'm very glad about having some missions for free. When I started League in season 2, there was no way to get free skins other than that alistar and tristana (afaik) and later that garen skin. I really love the hextech crafting and getting a taste of those juicy skins almost even got me to purchase more. So I guess it's working.
But I see your point. Having to pay to complete quests feels odd. I don't see what your issue is with cosmetics, though. What else would they give as reward?
It's equally bad as having to actually get like three or four chests to get "free random skin" (because of the Orange Essence grind), where you still have chance to get Champion Shards. Don't feel very rewarded for having most champs I can play with "chested" and yet most of these were champ shards. But Riot can't make a lot of things directly free, which is why there are these little things.
Think of it like this. They gave enough mission for "trial mode" of the craft system so that you could get at least one skin shard and one champ shard or ward shard for free. You just have to pay for more. Yes it's shitty when you imagine you are paying for grinding for chance to get something, but think of missions as special reward for the budle that is Pass and you are paying for the other content.
When a group pays enough for garbage we will continue to receive garbage like this.
I can't understand the logic of paying for the opportunity to farm. Aside for playing an mmo. How much was the pass like 2k rp right? Could have simply bought a real nice skin. Guess the carrot on a stick gemstones appealed to people.
I bought the pass. 1.5k RP, or about $11. People pay $60 for a game with 50 hours of playtime, but somehow spending $11 for 10 hours is pathetic.
Besides that, have you bought skins before? A lot of them cost 700+ with the best ones at 1300+. This is 1500RP, and it can give you 4 legacy skins (through mega orbs). I have 2 already from tickets, and once I finish the last of the missions I'll have enough tickets for 1 more mega orb and one mission gives a mega orb as reward. Oh, and 3 good orbs so far, so I can include 2 more champion shards + one ward shard and one icon. That's not a bad deal for 1.5k RP.
Why pay to farm? I didn't. I played a bunch of URF and had small goals going at the same time. Some took longer than others, but I was going to play a ton of URF anyway, so why not pay $11 for a weeks worth of gaming that I was going to do anyway?
I didn't mind them in the VS event, but that event seemed like it had a much better payout for your efforts.
But overall I agree. Don't really wanna have to purchase the ability to grind out tedious tasks for miniscule (and random) rewards.
Free to play. They charge no entry fee and are therefore allowed to psychologically compel you to make purchases through have and have not's. This is what you sign up for. I'm not saying you can't feel pissed about this, but I mean you are wanting free stuff from a game you didn't buy.
If LoL charged $60 upfront, then yeah, I would have an issue with this.
Wow, Riot really can't win with some of you guys. They give free stuff, and add an option for you to buy more of it, and you guys are complaining that the option isn't also free. Furthermore, the option is entirely cosmetic and adds nothing to your ability to play/win the game. Holy crap.
^This x10.
Why are you guys getting downvotes? This community really is toxic.
I don't even mind so much that you have to buy missions, I mind that they needlessly mark them up by giving useless icons and Ward skins.
I had to pay $10 more than I wanted to in order to buy the missions and get a ward skin that I never plan to use because I already have my favorite Ward skin (star guardian)
If riot insists on making missions cost money they can at least sell the missions all by themselves for $10 at most. Frankly considering their loot system is also atrocious and no other game that considers itself free to play does this anymore, I would say they might want to get on it soon.
this is so much the problem. they bundle missions with ward skins and icons to mark up the price, so if you want to participate you have to buy some useless crap that you have 0 interest in. sucks to be a consumer of riot digital content :(
Did people really think that riot added missions because they love their customers? Omega LUL.
This mission set is awful. Forcing people to play modes they don't want to. Forcing those people to not only play those modes, but try to make arbitrary time limits. Why did I give you guys money for this? I greatly dislike playing 5's games especially with 4 randoms with the pressure of winning in less than 35 minutes.
Came to debate Purcahsable Minnions.
Now if I could just find my glasses...
But Muh shekels
The only reason i actually bought that thing was for the damn gemstone.
