I would assume it's to avoid:

  1. Intimidation/defeatist attitude ("gg all plat+" "gg real X main vs scrub" etc)
  2. Bashing ("rofl did you get that border/badge in a cereal box")

Riot gave out icons to show off your rank status so I don't see the point of hiding them any more
