Fun fact. When we make champs we make "mood boards," basically huge photoshop images with dozens and dozens of references. This is so we can prove out that the imagery, personality, and theme will subconsciously make sense and resonate with players. This and Leviathan were on the board (along with kappas, chinese fish demons, and many other things.). So in a way, your friend was right.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and asked my Pastor why do people think all demons are bad. He replied, that they're all monsters looking to devour our souls. I said. "Not Master Chief!". He smiled and said, no Master Chief certainly isn't a bad demon.

Indeed, but what makes things more complicated is that the classification of animals was far less diverse back then, so whales would be considered fish. It wasn't until far later that the word "fish" stopped being a generic word for an aquatic creature, and started to refer to a scientific classification. Animals were pretty much split as follows: Fish in the sea, beasts of the earth, birds in the sky, and creatures that moved across the ground.

The original word used means a great sea creature of an indistinct nature. It could be a whale, or a fish, or something else.

Hhm... Well I like it but I'm not sure if others would, however the Nemesis series of books by the same author are ones I would highly recommend, a real giant monster book series.
