Why Is going untargetable a thing?

LatetotheRace··12 votes·1,854 views

I'm just trying to remember who all can do this. Shaco "Send in the clowns" MasterYi "Death Strike" Fizz "Pole of Pain" Zed "Shadow gangbang" Vladimir "Just that time of the month" Lissandra "I'm not trundle." Maokai "Let me give you an extremely rough and displacing hug" Fizz "It's on such a short cooldown, it's back up again." Edits/Suggestions :D Thanks guys. Bard "Do you wanna build a goldman?" (Only legit skill related one for the most part.) Elise "The itsy bitsy spoder went up the waterspote...." Pantheon "Is that the ManDrop signal?!?!"

Not really sure why this is considered outplay, it's like a spell shield on steroids. (Cough Cough Fiora Parry Cough Cough)

EDIT: Not necessarily trying to change it in a positive or negative way (Buff or nerf), I'm simply trying to bring awareness to how many champions have access to this mechanic.

technically Shaco ult removes him from the game for a brief second, it's not considered an untargetable effect

LatetotheRace1 votes

Yes, but he's kind of non-existent and thus untargetable. This would also apply for Master yi though.

Meep Man1 votes

The difference between the two is damage over times still hurt you while untargetable and tether effects will stay active as well. The problem with untargetable isn't really the effect itself, it is just that there isn't enough of the counter effect in the game for it to be ok to be.

pertaining to the topic at hand

Why not have it? Being untargetable is a unique mechanic in League and gives some pretty cool outplay potential (Shaco is a good example, since he can make some pretty cool shit happen).

Honestly, of this entire list the only one that's really stupid with it is Fizz, because it's a gapclosing escape that also does the majority of his damage while making him untargetable, preventing retaliation and making it impossible for you to stop him beforehand.

Whereas certain champions can have nice outplay with it, others simply abuse it. Master Yi and Fizz in particular. I personally think Elise's should be changed as well, but that's another topic. If it's going to be an actual mechanic asshole based champions like fizz and yi (most assassins really) shouldn't have access to it, and should have to make due with weaker or less flashy versions of evading CC.

I feel like basic abilities shouldn't give untargetability, or they should have ACTUAL FUCKING COOLDOWNS Fizz

I remember when Riot told us that, during testing, Yasuo's windwall blocked Shaco's ultimate.... permanently removing him from the game.

Should have kept that bug around

Should have kept that bug around

That bug made Fizz unplayable.

Well, it was actually a test on Shaco to change his ult into something that made him into a projectile, but Spaghetti code made it undoable.

Can you target something that doesn't exist?

No?

Then he's untargetable

Fiora is still targetable though...

Was about to piont this out...

LatetotheRace1 votes

Valid point, I'll remove her from the list.

It's a thing because it's a mechanic that can be created and used in the game.

That said, I'm only upvoting you for the creative writing.

LatetotheRace1 votes

In all reality this post wasn't supposed to be serious, or as me really scrutinizing the mechanics. I'm just bringing up an interesting conversation, with some good humor here and there.

TTUPhoenix5 votes

Elise Rappel makes her untargetable as well, but Fiora Riposte doesn't. Rek'sai is also untargetable while traveling to one of her tunnels with her ultimate.

Getting knocked away or up by Poppy's ultimate also makes you untargetable.

ßurst2 votes

Fiora has a 46% win rate cough cough

LatetotheRace1 votes

I don't believe I said anything about any champion being over-powered or under-powered. I'm just talking about a simple mechanic here mate, not the champions by themselves. :D

alot of bad people can play her and lose with her or like me can play her and be bad with her

Untargetability mechanics - when you want to make the outcome of a given matchup more dependant on how fast the player can react rather than a competition of the skill levels of the players involved, put one of these on their champion!

cuddlykitten41 votes

Since reaction time is in no way skill? O.o

Nameless Voice1 votes

It's a skill for one player, sure. But it takes away the opportunity for the other player to affect the outcome with their own skill.

Excalibait1 votes

aatrox can be untargetable while his passive procs. same goes for karthus.

LatetotheRace1 votes

Neither are much of an outplay mechanic to be fair. Plus karthus is dead now.

therealdragon1 votes

I would say because it makes sense thematically? The only one that doesn't is fizz but the rest it kinda makes sense.

Shaco supposed to surprise you MasterYi A master of the blade and strikes multiple people at once Fizz no idea Zed Its shadows Vladimir Master of blood (would apply to master of any liquid in the body) Lissandra When you get frozen in a block for a century, everything stops Maokai A forest spirit Fizz again, no idea Bard some cosmic crap Elise remember when you'd see that spider, go to kill it, then its gone?

Pantheon mid-ult works as untargetable

Abyssphere1 votes

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to talk about in this thread, but to answer the actual question in the title, it's probably because it's a defensive mechanism for squishy (mostly) characters that takes some gameplay and usually is fun to use because it gives a feeling of outplaying the enemy.

Kayle "Gotta carry protection"

Mai Waifu Irelia2 votes

You can definitely target people during Kayle ult. You can even cc them.

Mr Wright II1 votes

Regardless that quote is fucking perfect for her

Shaco Invisible is not the same as untargettable

BoundaryBreaker3 votes

When Shaco ults, he goes untargetable for like .5-1.0 sec before him and clone appear.

DoubleTongue1 votes

Because point and click cc like TF stun card and Annie Q need to have some level of unreliability. It gives both sides something to think about. Imagine how dominant TF would sit over fizz if he couldn't troll pole the gold card and kill him with a shark. Everybody has to have some form of hard counter and the inability to blow certain spells keeps the lane fresh with both sides weighing their options. TF can still use his stun card on Zed post-6 but now there are consequences for using it poorly.

SpookyNeedle1 votes

With fiora's W, does it make her untargetable. Or does it make her a bad person to target while the .75 second animation is playing?

WoonStruck1 votes

Its not really a problem on any of them except Fizz...

DorkunedAuras1 votes

RekSai ult makes her untargettable, but because the 1.5 second channel is interrupted by any damage, it's impossible to exploit.

LSmaster161 votes

Karthus ult?

DorkunedAuras1 votes

if you time it so that you're travelling underground from your ult when karthus ults, you WILL dodge it

paisy1 votes

I think it's fine if it's an ultimate like Zed's or Shaco's

Jet Sett1 votes

Shaco's takes skill, you gotta time it since it's probably the shortest one.

Nearly all of the champs that have this mechanic are squishy and need to get up close, they need some defensive tools to work, and straight cc-imunity, spellshields or tankiness wouldn't be as fitting for most of them thematically. I also find bard and pant a bit wierd on that list, as their effect is delayed and thus leads to very different gameplay.

Elise, panth, liss at least, tend to build tanky

Sire Hippington1 votes

pant imo doesn't really belong there, as his ult is a channle and thus hardly is ever used in-fight to actively avoid stuff. Elise was ment to be an ap-champo, so it made sense for her, and she still is often built ap-heavy. lisandra doesn't really get that tanky. Roa+abysal+zhonyas might not be full glass-cannon, but on a champ with her base-stats, it's still an overstatment to say she gets tanky with it.
