What can be done with Xin Zhao's concept? (Rework Discussion)

The recent controvery of the buffs he has recieved is just one part of a way bigger problem: Xin's current design is too simple and binary. One tiny buff, and suddenly he's on the verge of breaking the game singlehandly. I don't think I have to remind you of release Xin to tell you how bad it really can be.

Back then he was designed as one of Riot's experiments for what was supposed to be a "bruiser", but their ideas backfired, creating mostly balls of stats with unholy snowball potential and gameplay lacking depht and complexity in most parts. Another example for this would be Irelia. But this thread is supposed to be about Xin, so let's save her for another thread.

As far as his theme goes, there is nothing really specific, apart from being Ionian (implies material arts knowledge) and using a lance/spear in combat.

Right now his kit does barely reflect anything of that. His ultimate might be a good start, but not exactly what you might expect from a character like this. His role in the game is weird too: just going by his theme I'd see him in the middle of the enemy frontline, standing his ground against multiple enemies at once or maybe defending his own backline against engage tanks and assassins.

But not flopping on the enemy squishy and poking them to death in moments while his stat boni keep him alive...

But the question is: How can we make him really feel like a spear-fighter ingame?

I thought of something like a Yasuo Q for him, just not for a sword but for a spear (longer range, but wind-up time) and let the rest of his kit build up from that point. But that's just my idea on how it could work... Any Xin mains here who know this matter better than I do?

I'm far too tired to contribute much, but I think this video by Stonewall has some really good ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbkW4-l0Gzg

I actually hated most of the ideas.

Xin is a clean, simple Champion. This makes him great for new Players but much tougher to get into Competition Play (you won't see much Xin, just Yi, in Pro Play).

He should shred tanks and have sustain to stay in battle... which he has with Sustain from his W Passive and the Passive helps him pen than armor.

His Ult was simple... but you had a choice. Use it early where it did more damage, or save it to use as a Peel.

He was meant to be a Split Pusher... which his 1v1 Duel Potential certainly allowed for (Sunfire + Hydra = Tank Wave Clear, Q/W melt Turrets).

There is nothing wrong with his kit, it was simple yet effective and there was Counter Play.

You could Itemize against Xin... Frozen Heart to lower his Attack Speed (slowing the chance for him to Knock Up or Heal) and give you Armor to take those hits, Ignite or (crap, blanked on the name... Passive on an Item that slows Healing/Regen, usually taken when facing Mundo) to lessen the impact of his W Passive... and of course, like many of Xin's kind (looking at you, Yi), simple Hard CC in a Kit.

So, you have Counter Play... which is good.

At the same time, if you did what Xin SHOULD do... you could be in position to catch a Squishy out and delete them, you could Split Push and be fine if they only sent 1 after you, or you could Team Fight as either a Peel or a Dive... all depending on how you Built.

In other words, his simplicity of Kit allowed for a Variety of Kit which determined which STYLE of Xin you wanted to play.

The major issue with Xin is that he's really just a Stat Dump Champion. He's not perfect, by far... but the idea of an easy Champion for new-er players to grasp that can play different styles dependent on Build is a GOOD idea. Not everyone can be Zed or some other High Skill/High Mechanic Champion.

if they ever "rework him", i hope they keep his identity to be able to fight 4 enemies and even his allies all at once when he's fed

That's what his theme is actually: a fighter who can stand against impossible odds and still come out on top due to his skills and strenght.

The problem is the current implementation in the game - this is what need to be fixed.
