Why does Shen even have AP scalings?

Because I'm not exactly sure what to build on this guy if I ever wanted to utilize them. Usually for AP tanks one could go as core, but Shen a) doesn't use mana, making a lichbane also totally inefficient. and b) barely applies spell effects.

I wonder if maybe a build like this could work... .

Well, that makes the ult-shield kind of OP and increases the %-hp damage on Q, but I doubt you get to live long with a build like that.

Or maybe something like this? (of choice) + tank items of choice, or + against heavy AP teams. But you probably still die like instantly.

Not sure why a champion that you usually only would build HP, Def stats and AD (titanic hydra, forsthammer, steraks, etc). on would have such scalings in the first place...

You dont build AP on shen at all. Hes a tank.

Problems with shen

Scales off Ap ( Not sure why the hell thats a thing on Shen )
Gets kited too easy
Is a tank with 1 cc....

Ap scalings generally exist on non-mages just so they don't feel guilty building AP if there happens to be an item that provides it in addition to other stats/effects they might want. It doesn't mean they should have AP centric builds. (It's also an added bonus for buffs that provide AP like baron.)

Abyssal and banner of command are probably the things that come to mind, and perhaps zekes on support shen. Probably a few other items that'd be situationally useful that would feel super wasteful if he didn't have ap ratios.

He's a tank. You build tank. If you want you could throw in an Abyssal Scepter or Banner of Command which are hybrid Tank/AP items because you think their special effects are beneficial. If you want you could build Guinsoo's or Gunblade for additional sustained damage and benefit from the AP. It's just meant to open up his options a little.
