For all the players stuck in silver

This is really common sense but if you are someone like me who has been stuck in silver for a long time you need to hear this. This really applies to all elos, but I am focusing on silver since the largest portion of the population is in that elo.

I was personally stuck in silver for roughly 2.5 seasons. My goal was always to reach gold, but I always fell short until this season. High elo players like to make fun of low elo because we suck, but its fine because its true. The good news is, a vast majority of the players who play this game have a lot to improve on so none of that matters.

After playing this game for 6 years and grinding ranked for like 4 this is what it took me 3.5 years to learn. Your rank is your rank for a reason. It doesn't matter what teammates you get, how many afks you get, how many trolls, smurfs, etc. Its all about you and how you play the game. Which leads us to the three basic perceptions players have in (especially in silver).

  1. I am good, my team sucks: This happens at all elos but I think its really common in silver & bronze. A lot of my friends I play with currently in silver have this perception or #2. This idea is basically, I am good but my teammates are holding me back. The problem with this is its not true. And since its not true, all this perception does is hold you back from improving.

  2. I don't really care about ranked. You will see players like this who play a few ranked games and don't really care about their rank. They will try out different champions, different lanes, and just overall play very casually. The problem with this mindset is, if you are not trying your hardest to win or playing your best champions you are not going to rise in rank. It also takes time to rank up so you have to play more than 10-20 games to generally reach the rank you want.

  3. Realizing you still have a lot to learn and improve on. There is tons of things to learn in this game. Once you accept the fact that you have a lot to learn, you will finally be able to start learning and playing the game. This is what I realized a few months ago and it has helped me immensely.

I know reaching gold is not a huge achievement, but it is important to me and I know it is to other players grinding the ladder. Realizing I was bad at this game and opening my mind to learning has helped immensely. I currently have two accounts ranked in gold this season with a third currently in silver 2, which I use to play with friends (we lose a lot I am not good enough to boost them).

Pick some roles, play the champs you are confident in and continue to learn. You will eventually start to see a rise in rank.

I read a comment once that the only difference between gold & silver players is gold players realize they suck. Although not true for all players, this is 100% accurate for me and many gold and up players I play with. Its all about opening up your mind to learning the game and improving.

It's a team game, unless you are a diamond playing in silver good luck carrying the retards. Think about it this way, you have been playing for 6 years. However it only takes a 7-10 game win streak from S1-G5. If only you had a team with half a brain. Other than that I completely agree with everything you said, the fact that there is plenty to learn. Those who play ranked to "try out" champs should take it to norms.

Dukues2 votes

Sadly players still try out champs in ranked. But their rank or stats generally end up reflecting that. Its a game of averages, one will stick around a certain rank if that play at that skill level on average, one will rise in rank if playing higher than a certain skill level overtime or rank down if playing at a lower skill level. One thing that really f's up players rank is tilt. I used to be a huge victim of tilt in prior seasons. Now If I lose a couple games I take a long break or just quit for the day. I have also chilled out a lot more. Games are a lot more fun when you play with an open mind and are not pissed off at everyone and everything all the time.

Rotisserie Jews3 votes

I couldn't agree more with games being more fun while open minded. I don't tilt, I just get angry and flame feeders. Nothing positive comes from flaming them. But nothing positive come from feeding, so I continue to flame.

I did a test just yesterday night. I can consistently carry in ~Silver4. I'm only Gold4. No need to be Diamond to carry in Silver.

"ELO Hell" kinda exists in the sense that you can get stuck for a long time slightly below your real level, at some point where you're a bit better than the people around you, but not better enough to Solo Carry. But the key word here is "slightly", something like 2 or 3 divisions. And even then, with some time and some grinding, you'll climb up.

Every game feels like a roll of the rng between 4 outcomes.

Unwinnable game, Free win game, Hard fought victory, Hard fought loss.

Work on turning those hard fought losses into victories and you will climb.

Examples: Had an unwinnable game with two brain dead carries. Lose and move on

Had a free win, enemy teemo raged and fed from minute one.

Had a hard fought loss, sitting as an adc waiting for my front line to engage...they hesitated and got poked down and we lost

Had a hard fought win. Countered in lane, came back around the 30 min mark and won

One thing I really focused on this season is the hard fought loss/victories. I used to see my teams score of 1-10 and think "fuck it... move on games over". Now I see it as "well were down but still have a chance". And since its low elo a good chunk of those games my team ends up coming back and winning. There is the occasional throw, but I have won a lot more hard fought victories this season than in the past by focusing on all aspects of the game not just the early game.

No game is unwinnable. Even if you have four brain-dead teammates, you can shotcall for them if you're good enough. You can literally outline the game plan before minions spawn, tell your teammates how to play your lanes, and check up on them every couple of seconds to make sure they aren't doing anything stupid. Does Jarvan look like he's about to get killed by Ignite Pantheon's level 2 all in? Ping him back, and type into chat that he'll most likely be killed if he goes for more minions. Does mid not realize that the playmaking support is missing? Ping her back, and say that she might be ganked by that support. Are the enemies weak enough for your Riven to 1v2 them at Rift Herald, but she's hesitant? Tell her to fight them. If they don't listen to you, then you weren't charasmatic enough. Show that you're a friendly, smart, and good teammate, and you'll get followers. They'll listen to you if they realize you're knowledgeable. Can't type fast enough to give good suggestions? Again, that's on you. Work on your typing; communication is important. Can't keep tabs on your other laners? That's on you.

I used to think i could never get to silver, then i did.I used to think i could never get to gold, and now im almost there.

I've been spamming nothing but Jhin because he's my absolute favorite adc, and the reason i even came back to league.

Honestly i feel its a lot better to focus on one role and get really good at it, than to know how to play all roles at a semi decent level.

With new champ select learning 2 roles is really all you need to do. I started season as supp main and only played Morgana & Nautilus support. My other account I played lux mid till siver 2 then ezreal adc to gold. Now I jungle on all my accounts playing only Elise Vi JarvanIV. So happy with the JarvanIV early clear buff has made jungling as him much nicer.

I would love to expand my roster of things to play, but seeing as how this is my second account, and trying to use IP on runes, champs, and rune pages basically costs an arm and a leg, im stuck with Jhin as my adc and Viktor as my mid laner

I think my biggest problem is that I can't be in 2+ roles.

I feel like if I don't jungle, the jungle always feeds, and if I don't adc, half the time the adc is worthless. And Jungle and Supp are my favorite roles, but today I had a braum game where I tilted so hard by then end because my 2 carries were worthless, and I was an underfed braum. So i literally just watched the rift go up in flames around me.

I know I lend to games losing, but at least I rarely feed, and am at least a neutral impact in a game, and more often than not make a huge difference. It's too bad my favorite ADC to Q with I rarely run into, because our synergy is great, and he is fun to play with except he doesnt let me targon -_-.

It's just frustrating to have to rely on yourself when if everyone did 10% better or would at least know their role, that we would win.

And after Volibear 's nerf, for jungle I spam MonkeyKing and carry, or try damn hard getting my team to carry with all my aggression, Sejuani if I know my teammates because i need follow up, but she simply doesnt have the dmg to carry, or Jhin because he's my favorite and best adc atm.

supps are Braum and Bard but i suddenly got bad at bard recently because i cant play enough

But I blazed through s5 to s3 and have lost my S2 promos four or fives times now

Yea ranked can be a real pain in the ass. It took me over 2 seasons to win promos to get to silver 1. Actually, 8 tries in 2 seasons. At least promo helper is out there now. Its really hard to explain in words but what changed ranked for me was the #3 perspective/attitude w/e u want to call it. With 5-6 weeks left of season 5 I went on a tilt losing streak from silver 2 to silver 4. It was the first time I was in silver 4 all season. Needless to say I was pissed and stopped playing the game for like a week. Then it hit me. Other players/friends/etc. can rank up out of silver so it must be possible. I just have to stop blaming others, focus on myself and just get better. Sadly I did not make gold before season 5 was over, but I did make it to gold promos on the last day of season 5. Sadly I went 0-3, but made it to gold during preseason so knew I could do it again in season 6.

You are going to get shit carries, and have teammates do weird things, but I honestly don't really notice that stuff that much anymore. I just focus on my next moves and the game at hand. Its all about increasing your chances of winning. I know I am not good enough to hard carry every game in silver, but I know I am good enough to have a large impact in most games that similar rank players may not. So over x number of games I will win roughly 54-55% of them in silver, resulting in ranking up eventually. Its all about getting good enough to have enough influential impact to win more games than you lose to rank up. The ranking system is sort of weird in some situations, but generally speaking the better you get the more wins you should get and the higher rank you should achieve. Although tilt losing streaks are terrible so I highly suggest not playing ranked if you in a bad mood or lose 2 games in a row. I used to keep playing and would go on 7-8 games losing streaks. Now I don't and have significantly reduced my losing streaks this season.

Yeah, that's what I learned out of my bronze climb. Do everything you can do, and otherwise, nothing else you can do. It got to the point where if I died on Voli, i could attribute it to me being an idiot, and then I would only have one or two deaths from actual fights. TBH my climb outta bronze was so fun. I learned so much about jungling and the power of early pressure and ganks, and how to snowball on voli hardcore. Wu is a bit harder because you have no real cc pre-6, but sej is so fun as well.

I'm looking forward to going back to college and being able to have internet again. I play league at the local library lol, and at this point, Im staying the same skill level because every time i play its working off the rust. I climbed from silver 5 to silver 3 in three or so play sessions, but it's the cursed silver 2 promos that suck atm. yesterday after i lost my promos i had a net gain of 3 lp XD two more wins and back in my series bb

Dukues1 votes

Ha nice. Yea working off the rust makes it hard to climb. This is kind of a weird season but every season is a good reminder that the game changes especially with the big patch changes every 6 months (such as adc & mage changes this season). So if you are a certain skill level at one point but then quit playing or don't stay up to date on the game then your rank suffers. I have two buddies who have been gold the last 2 seasons currently sitting in silver 3. They pretty much stopped playing a lot after last season and my only thought now is they have not adjusted to the new meta/changes in season 6. I for one have found this season the easiest to rank up in while playing solo where other players are really struggling.

I still play with season 5 plat players or season 5 gold 1 or 2 players who usually have a lot of games played this season and usually around 0lp in gold 5. Not sure why they having such a hard time ranking up this season, but I also don't find them overwhelmingly difficult to play against so maybe they rusty or w/e they were doing in season 5 no longer working in season 6. Or I personally just learned a lot more about the game in the last year than I realized. Not sure what to think.

0-19 is rather impressive. Kinda said they didn't make it to 20. Any joking a side, in games like that you just have to shrug it off as it is unlikely you will have another 0-19 player the next game on your team. Chances are there wont be a feeder that bad and if there is they might be on the enemy team. If you get 2 games in a row like that then its time to quit playing ranked for the day. Luck is obviously not on your side for that day.

Super late but I just felt like reading all this. I have hit a s2 promo wall. I got into silver 2. Won a couple and then lost 3. Took me back to s3 but my mmr was really good. I was getting 23 per win and 16-17 per loss. The best way to climb out of silver is to keep spamming the same champ when you are winning games. Especially in the jungle. You can control a lot of the game flow as jungle and if you have a standard early game pathing you can really gank early and start your team in the right foot at lvl 3 early ganks. My suggestion, even if u start losing a couple, just keep playing, tilted or not just try and grind. You don't realize it but you have just as many win streaks as lose streak. Currently I was just on 3 game win streak and got back to s2 promos, but then lost 3 in a row and am now back in the middle of silver III. However, like I said, the game is starting to realize that I have skills that can handle the level of play at higher elo so my mmr is very generous, meaning the games thinks you should be higher than you are. Once you start getting more than 21lp per win. Start spamming your best champ in mid or jung because in this game, that's the only way to truly snowball a game. I recommend amumu still for silver, building tank and ap depending on situation makes him very strong and he is a great early ganker pre/post 6. In the bot lane ashe is a great pick because I think by now most silver players know how to position and not be brainless when adc. Top lane, fiora is a champ that can really carry games if u have good mechanics and don't use your w like a damn boosted monkey. For me, ahri is a good mid laner in silver due to her assassin like burst and ability to get out of sticky situations. Last support... I like a good thresh but only of u understand how to play him, blitz and Leona are very viable as well, although if your team falls behind, blitz isn't the best if their team decides to group. Hope someone reads this lol. I believe I have the macro and situational decision making skills of gold 3 and the actually ability of s1, so I think I will be gold pretty soon as long as I can climb past these promo walls with the free wins ill be getting once in series again.

The whole your ranking is your ranking for a reason or getting a hard time for saying your teammates are bad when you're in the same ranking is an utterly flawed concept, sure if you're saying you're challenger when you blatantly aren't that is incorrect but when you're doing your part and others are doing far less than their part you lose no matter how well you do.

Riot's idea of ranked play is 1v9 carry or stay stuck where you are...

how you even find this? Post so old lol. Idk man I just hit plat for first time (season nice plat lul) and I feel worse at the game than ever. But at the same time I feel better..... but just realize how many shitty errors I still make. But I still outperform players ranked than me more consistently. So its kinda two fold. Like I can't bitch about being stuck in plat because that's my current ranked elo. I can bitch about the quality of the games etc. but all I can really do is focus on myself to climb. Same for all elos.

The problem with this season is gold is like the old silver. Everyone is climbing off just playing. If you play enough games you'll eventually climb. I have friends in plat who main adc and do 10-13k dmg barely dealing any useful amounts of dmg as the team's main dmg source. And yet theyre always given teammates who carry their games. Now im happy they got to plat but at the same time i saw how much i struggled to obtain it in previous years and it tilts me to think someone who got this lucky landed there not even playing their role properly.

Damn this really dug out of the archives so confused lol. Eh I mean Riot moved up rank distributions so it's not really our friends faults... riot just changed meaning behind ranks. I don't like it either event though I am currently benefiting from it (currently plat 4). But I guess if it got to plat 3 it would be = to old plat 5 so I then I could feel like I earned it? But at same time.... it is what it is and I am over it.

Gold feels shittier now that its like old silver 1 included. The game just changed a lot in season 8 after the increased damage. I finally have adjusted to it but still miss older seasons.

But yea... honestly they really just dumb the game down all around. They made it a lot easier to kill people and made macro less important. At the highest level it still is obviously and I mean it is at all elos but just less so it feels like. I mean hell... I won a bunch of season 9 gold 1 games as adc and in the past I got shit on in like old gold 3 as adc. Granted that was a few years ago and I have improved but... idk.... just feels shitty.

Most normal games I can't tell plat from silver players lol.

Light Burner1 votes

I agree this is how its become. I dont play adc but yet i play adc when ranking at times in around high gold to plat elo, and what i used to struggle with as a terrible adc player now i feel like a diamond player when playing adc, just because of how easy it is to take advantage of the amount of mistakes my laning opponent makes and how fast your dmg spirals out of control.

For some reason Riot doesn't see this and is still allowing people to climb and forcing people to a 50% winrate.
