Riot Balance & Design teams have cured my addiction

Dukues··285 votes·26,995 views

Honestly, I want to say thank you. I have played the game since season 1 and by end of season 2/start of season 3 I was super addicted to League. Over the years I kept telling myself I needed to cut back but kept seeing a good chunk of my free time invested in League. Honestly... around seasons 5 & 6 I figured I would just keep playing League well into the future.

But. You saved me!

The champion design teams disregard of how it feels to play verse a champ or what weaknesses in a kit even are anymore has made it very easy for me to hate almost every new released or reworked champ the last couple years. Top that with the balances teams complete disregard for balance and refusing to reduce the already insane amount of damage in the game but instead continue to compound it by buffing more & more champs. Well... basically I find the game unplayable.

Just imagine. If the game still had tanks absorbing loads of damage while simultaneously doing generally low damage. Adcs wouldn't lose over half their health from 1 mage skill shot in mid game. Assassins actually had to know to play their champion and use their full kit to get kills and survive. And well... actually had to be even gold or ahead to kill carries rather than behind but still can instant delete them. Remember when you couldn't 3-4 man baron at 20 mins? Hell... was hard to even 5 man him at 20 mins. Or when their actually was a mid game to League? Instead of just early game and then basically whoever gets first baron wins (if game last that long).

Fuck man... just imagine. I would never quit playing that game. Fortunately for me the League I remember playing is dead. So I can now look forward to having more free time and saving money by not spending an absurd amount/year on this game.

So thank you Riot! Thank you for messing your game up so bad the last 2ish seasons even one of your most dedicated players and supporters can't stand playing it anymore. :)

So i'm not the only one who has the same thought. Although i'm rarely playing League now, so it wouldn't count as quitting.

My only question is: How long will it take for the vast majority of the playerbase to have the same thought as you and quit to an amount enough that Riot won't be able to survive much due to how much players they've lost?

I mean they're appealing to a new audience so most of the missing player's spots are being filled. Its become more of a team based fighting game than a strategy game and there's a market available for that. Especially given that the asian markets (primarily China/Korea) just want League to be faster due to PC Cafe culture and how they play fast paced games anyway.

It'd take them pissing off people who like League being a clusterfuck of damage to actually hurt them at all. Despite how the game feels to play, its not really that imbalanced for having 140 champs and being in preseason. 44-53.5% winrate spread across champions is actually pretty normal, there's always outliers that are hard and team dependent so they do poorly in solo Q and there's always people floating 1-2% above the winrate curve for being pubstompers. The ones 53 and above usually are both overtuned and pubstompers so there's probably room to nerf them but that existing doesn't ruin the entire game.

Like I think the only way Riot ruins League is if champion imbalance gets to actual extremes, like lower than 40% or higher than 60% being common. That or if they do something that dramatically fucks the game pacing like towers being made of literal glass and tower plating dying in one auto. Even people who want fast League want to finish items.

Can you actually explain why League is still printing money to the point where their esports prize pool is growing, they're getting more and more sponsors, and their playerbase if down at all hasn't changed enough to affect things like matchmaking times (at least in NA)? Because if its not "Players who leave are being replaced by a new audience" then there's seemingly no answer as to why this is a thing and that's not very useful if you want to get to the core of why Riot is still succeeding despite pissing people off. Like people complain here all the time, but half the people who post admit to have quitting the game. And plenty of people who do post here do like the game as is, or at least tolerate it.

It's important to actually understand what's going on so we can actually petition Riot for changes rather than "LUL GAME SUCKS, HOPE RIOT GAMES DIES" like a lot of people echo here. I upvoted the OP and agree with the sentiment that the game state isn't ideal but the fact is a lot of people want League to be in the state it's in and its not just Riot. And understanding what's actually working about the game and what we would want changed from the game can actually give Riot useful feedback... assuming they give enough fucks to listen to it.

Now, i find this argument quite disingenuous. Let's say you try dark chocolate for the first time and decide to buy it from a specific company only. In your opinion, they make the best one and even offer a few options as well (different flavors). You're happy because you're buying what you like but it comes a day when a company slowly starts offering white chocolate products too. You don't like white chocolate but it doesn't bother you since you still got your preferred choices offered to you.

Eventually, white chocolate products start to push out dark chocolate ones and you slowly find yourself having less and less choices. Maybe even your favorite flavor is no longer being offered so you get salty about that and proclaim "buying chocolate from this company was the biggest regret of my life".

What you're saying here is that you now deny your entire experience and pleasure from buying what you wanted for years because you've seen where it eventually leads to, so your money could've been "spent somewhere better". If that's the case, you yourself have now admitted that you can't be trusted with your own money because a purchase that's likely not going to last you until your death, would always be considered as a poor investment.

Last Year's EUW Ranked Players: 3,641,828 Current EUW Ranked Players (bugged a little, they've got Bronze 4 being the lowest rank in the culmination): 3,048,401

3,048,401 / 3,641,828 = 83.7%, or a 16.3% decrease in population

Not as bad as he's saying, but still not great.

Completely agree, I used to love this playing this game. I loved actually being able to outplay someone on anything if you were good enough, and I loved longer matches where things could actually become tense. Those kinds of games were the most fun I've ever had in this game, and season 8 has done nothing but completely destroy what I enjoyed about League. I have played less games this season and all my friends that play League agree that the game is nothing like what it used to be.

Wow tbh just logged in to say I feel the exact same way. Started S3 thought I would play forever. The game continued to improve through season 5. Season 6 was a bit iffy. Then they change progression. Now we get blue essense from 1 game a day. Not from how much time you put in or how you play. Everything is based of loot boxes. I hated it. But I pushed through anyway. Then repeatedly patch after patch you ignored the true problem of how you sped up the pacing of the game. To much damamge. To fast. Too often. From everyone. 2 YEARS! I am also free. I haven't quit just yet. But less then a game a week might as well be. I feel sorry for company you've become. Goodbye.

Their broken stuff made their flawed matchmaking even worse. No wonder everyone's quitting. Even Nexus Blitz, a supposed "fun mode", is just a stomp/get stomped mindless fiesta.

Just had another disgusting game in Normals: unranked and Silvers vs. 3 premades, one of them D4 and former Diamond 1 :D I have no more expectation about this game and the people who are "working" on it.

reaper404218 votes

I feel that. I got obsessed these past 2 years, and I played like 8 games a day, on weekends itd be like 15-20. Over the last month i've played less and less and now it's been almost a week since i've even logged in. I slowed down once ranked ended. but then I kept playing, and the playerbase is somehow more toxic. And I think all the charm for me ended when I spoke to a rioter and was told, that afk and feeding isn't considered a punishable response, even toxicity is pardoned to a rather large extent. Hats off to you, I hope you find something you enjoy as much as or even more than league.

Same. Haven't played a ranked match in almost two weeks, and I have to deal with rank decay. What am I supposed to do to not derank when I hate playing this game they've ruined? I'd so much rather play rdr2 and Counter-strike.

I'm very much in the same boat - the complete disregard for anything other than damage, damage!, DAMAGE!, just sucked the fun out of this game. Revert to mid S5, or S4, and try again, please.

thats not true .. adc got most of their damage taken away.. and more of their health as if they werent already squishy... oh and their resistances.. so a support with no kills or assists can burst them down at any point in the game bc the adc can't afford an item to return a trade.

I thought the more squishy and immobile, and least cc the mroe damage you do.. But here in riot land which is basically becoming world of warcraft (without a story).. We get the reverse of logic XD.

Princess Bunhead6 votes

The problem with ADCs was the whole bursts per minute debacle - which I can agree on was over the top vs squishies. However, removing said burst-per-minute from early-ish/midgame, with burst (and self sustainability) being the only truly viable option atm, it left ADCs somewhat lacking.

Then many got "forced" to use Stormrazor in lane, or autolose - postponing that "shredding" powerspike of AA crit ADCs, which is still very much there if they get the items in time. It's just that anything squishy without the tools to outplay/survive just gets shit on by this burst meta, that's been creeping on us ever since thunderlords was introduced.

So by the damage claim, everyone having access to a good bit of burst, even tanks, just fucks everyone over - with the balance team mostly only able to use the "this guy needs a buff some how! Hmm, lets buff his damage!!1" philosophy.

I've stated, that instead of buffing anything damagewise atm, they should only nerf it, or buff something else non damage related - even if it means A LOT more work.

A good start would been removing duskblade passive, stormrazor completely, burst keystones (electrocute/DH/etc), remove conqueror - and then start from there with the rebalancing - which again, is a huge load of work. Perfect for a preseason...

I feel the same way. I spent years chasing the dragon with League. I wanted to get a regular 5s team going and experience the way the game was designed to be played. And i really wanted to buckle down and make a serious run to break out of gold.

Just those two goals could have kept me a devoted player and fan indefinitely, but the state of the game today has completely shaken me out of it

I sank so much time in this game, and I ignored a lot of other things that I could have been spending my attention on. The state of the game is a real blessing in disguise.

It was pretty goddamn fun while it lasted and I really did get a lot of what I needed out of it. But now things have changed, and I'm not putting any more energy into it.

Its kind of a shame if this is the way League hits a ceiling and just kinda chugs along until it gets eclipsed by the genres next big installment. I had a lot of hope for its future, but all good things eventually come to an end.

As long as goobers keep forking over money they won't listen. You have to hit them hard, where their bank is. Honestly I think most people are just waiting for something else to take LoL's place before they jump ship. I find it fucking hysterical that Riot originated in NA, moved to China just to be fucked up beyond belief, just like everything else in our economy.

La Bello20 votes

Riot originated in NA, moved to China just to be fucked up beyond belief, just like everything else in our economy.

they didnt move to china. Tencent just acquired a massive portion of their shares years and years ago and LoL is basically one of their "top earners" for the longest time before other younger games came along. what befell league was literally the same trap that befalls almost EVERY form of insanely popular media https://youtu.be/fuZ6ypueK8M http://fhif.wikia.com/wiki/Cookie_Dough

the truemadcap idea guys behind original league all moved on or took a backseat. In thier place are just a bunch of soulless bean counters and "statisticians" . People who make sure that the game is PROFITABLE first and foremost even at the cost of fun. People who rather than having talent instead rely on cold hard math and algorithms to guide the way. Like the lifespan goes like this

1.A couple dudes surviving off hot pocket's in a basement come up with a lightning in a bottle idea 2. said product is hyper popular and takes off the country is taken by storm of its sheer originality and awesomness

  1. corporate suites and various share holders smell blood in the water. the "Original 5" or whatever are approached with an offer no sane person would refuse $$$

  2. First comes expansion. Companies will begin rapidly expanding. to incorporate more workers and whatnot to keep the game running smoothly Instead of having one guy madcapping a bunch of different things you now have "teams" dedicated to almost every individual aspect of your product. This leads to a LOT of bureaucratic tape being set up and a ton of channels that makes communicating a mess.

  3. Then the "original 5" or whatever leave. either they take a backseat to everything basically just becoming a worthless company figurehead puppet or they take thier slice of the cake and move on to make other products/games. Either way they are no longer influencing the product

  4. with the "OG 5" no longer at the reigns of course jobs start falling to other people. But not just any people as natural talent "subjective" and companies want something thats OBJECTIVE. THis is basically where almost every product or medium goes to shit because that means that companies are going to start brining in "bean counters" or statisticians. These people are the absolute worst of the worst because they've completely forgotten important human aspects like basic empathy or emotions and only know how to look at the cold.hard.numbers. This leads to basically nothing more than soulless trend copying. "Our data shows that games that used the lootbox system saw a 14% increase in income sir" , "Sir that design might be a bit too alien for our audiences. According to these charts/graphs/studies humans would rather play as totally hot anime warrior women or a testosterone oozing warrior with big sword than an eldritch shade from beyond the stars . We recommend corrective action be taken and the art teams base new skins off this instead". Ever wondered why so many kid's cartoon nowadays rely on "Butt" jokes or gross out humor instead of competent writing? Ever wonder why action movies almost always seem so formulaic and why every horror movie has the most predictable jump scares ever? This right here is why. Rather than take risk with original ideas these people only know how to "do what works" which leads to basically a lot of interesting ideas remaining unfulfilled and artist becoming stifled. AKA the" STOP BEING SO WEIRD MIYAZAKI" phase.

https://66.media.tumblr.com/7af05baa760431f5610a90ee8ac72da3/tumblr_phlgwpDeFa1rvlxxwo1_1280.jpg "uhh well Bob thats a great robot design and all but thats almost too alien like! according to our data its harder for people to self-insert and connect with non-humanoids...and we gotta make sure this designs a hit! ahhhh thats much better Bob! I knew you could do it!"

and likewise in League

https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/3/31/Kai%27Sa_Insights_03.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180318033302 "wow THATs the void hunter? well she sure looks the part but uh... how will the people playing her know that she's actually a hot girl beneath that? yeah yeah integrity and all that but BOB! look man... we gotta put food on the table and this year was kinda bad.. this characters GOTTA be a hit and the DATA SHOWS that people prefer the females champions to be totally hot ya know with cleavage and a midriff and a super pretty face! like the rest of our female champs! so how about you redesign things a bit aaaaaannnd. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/6b/Kai%27Sa_concept_08.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20180220192643

PERFECT! great work Bob! that new design TOTALLY just screams " I look like a corrupted monster that people are afraid of" Thats definately on-par with the same mutations Jax,Malz and Kassadin suffered great work!

  1. So anyways once the above starts happening the game starts to decline in quality much to the obliviousness of everyone else. They will amount it to a bunch of other things like "shelf life" or people "moving on" (I guess Smash Bro's Melee is just a freak case huh?). Anything but their own incompetence. Of course cant be our fault! we are using DATA!! Science and MATH to give people exactly what they (should) want twenty times over!! How could we possibly be in the wrong? M..maybe we just need to switch genre to a Battlegrounds shooter! o..or maybe we make a card game! HEY! p..people like Marvel right? I always hear people talking about the marvel movies? maybe we get some of the THEM on-board! yeah! that'll get us back afloat!

So now the company is slowly deteriorating and people are scrambling to figure out why, the nematode businessmen are finishing up their latest venture and the "OG 5" or whoever is left basically sit on their mound of cash probably with a solemn look wondering if it was worth it all. Trading one dream for another.

Do NOT get me started on Irellia, btw, who is still somehow broken AF even after like 4 nerfs. I've literally seen a Zoe miss every single Q she threw at someone in an exchange yet still manage to kill the player they were fighting with someone ELSE'S picked up ignite and empowered autos. She's an idiot proof turd of a champion, and there are going to be more to follow.

Champs like her and this horrid balance team of League of Legends is murdering this game.

The game is trash now. They're too focused on banning people for what they say in chat rather than balancing their game. They reap in money from skins and chests while giving us practically nothing in return. I still play but it's not like I used to and everything you've stated it absolutely correct. All these new over-powered buff champs are just redundant now. [zombie-brand-mindblown]

Totally agree with that. I quit about half a year ago and regret nothing. Most of my friends quit long before me.

I started out in S7, and though I got beaten up a lot (on the battlefield as well as in the ingame chat), I found the game quite enjoyable - a nice, fast paced strategic game. Since S8 changes it's just a mindless bloodshed brawl, and I personally hate those kind of games. Still. it took me half a year to figure out that I had no fun at all playing League anymore. The habit of playing your "main game" dies hard I guess. But Riot freed me, too. God bless them.

Relatable OP. Been feeling this way for seasons now, just never really thought of it that way myself. I've seen bad signs since long ago, and like others, I'm regretting the money I spent. Only thing still keeping me around is my habit to collect skins that I can, like these new prestige skins with the tokens you get in these events.

I don't see a lot of people talking about it here, by the way (save for a few), but the punishment system and honor and everything within that realm is a failure and a half. It's actually scary how they handle peoples' accounts when this game is such a time-, and for some people, money-sink.

It does hurt not enjoying a game I have loved for so long. But at the end of the day I know League will live on and I hope those who continue to play enjoy it for years to come. I am sad I may not be joining them anymore, but to be honest I have spent enough time playing League and need to start doing other things in life.

Thanks Riot for the good years and maybe one day I will check back in and find I enjoy League again. But in it's current state I doubt I will enjoy it.

Clash is pretty hype in my opinion. I would keep playing for Clash although everyone I play with hardly touches the game anymore so we probably just get destroyed each tourney but as long as we having fun it don't matter.

if Riot continues on this road surely it will drop down and its play-rate will go sooooo much down, there are new strong future games that are amazing it will destroy league. so hurry up riot enhance ur in-game style, reporting system, your balance team ideas. I think they got an ideology of reaching the Guinness world record in getting the most game with the most damage done in a short amount of time. Explain that when a malphite has more damage than an orianna? this shit can go either Ap or full Tank and deal dmg see thts how it works look at other game ideas like dota 2, Smite, HoTS etc. and learn and enhance , enlighten yourselves !!

Good for you man, now you can find a better game!

I broke free last season around April, because I was addicted to getting the free loot boxes for S grades. But when S grades got much harder to get, because games were shorter and damage was higher (though not as insane as it is now), I was able to break free.

I remember playing this game for hours on end with friends or alone, just because it was so much fun to play, now I only play four or so games with a full team and completely gave up on even attempting to play along as I honestly just play the game for the company of friends now, the gameplay itself feels kind of dead to me.

Riot will start to care when streamers and e-sports players quit.

I can't help but agree with you. They keep giving "Stealth" to almost every new champion, they can't understand that roles are crucial to the game, and designing champions that can fit in multiple roles is not the way to follow. With every new patch they mess up everything about meta and the experience that the game should give. If in the past there was some competition, where you actually should have put your abilities at work, nowadays the 70% - 80% of a fight is "champion-based". Make League a competitive game again, where people can challenge themselves showing their abilities at the game, at least make this the most important thing. So even improving would return to be something exciting about the game itself.

P.S. A little example of how "giving free passive stats to champions is wrong" ( And from my point of view is the worst thing about balance ):
