How the game lost it's own magic

In the past the community was restrained by some facts :

  1. You don't play league if you can't afford to play at least 30-45min games that was the average time of the games.
  2. You don't play league because it is a trend brought by e-sports and high competitivity you played because you wanted to have fun with friends and because many of your friends recommended you to play it.

Anyways what is the point of playing it for competitivity if only 0.00001% of the players will be able to make a rent out of it ? We should play for fun.

I don't care what you will say if you don't played before season 5 you will not understand what i'm talking about.

League lost its magic because this happened :

The core aspects of the game were those and that's what made this game famous :

  • Average 30-45min games long
  • Teamfights lasting over a minute
  • Long fights with a lot of counterplay and outplays
  • A lot of turnarouds
  • Turrets being a real defensive structure not a mere objective
  • The map was fair with both teams a team ahead wouldn't be able to finish the game with an unfair number of drakes or baron buffs.
  • You could really feel that early champs were godly at beginning and like shit in late game.
  • The concept of early mid and late game were impactfull.
  • High versatility with ap and ad ratios for each champion
  • Runes and masteries were made to offer various options

Most of those above disappeared because Riot wanted to have flashy plays and fights every second of the game. Because of viewers :

  • Games being shorter forces more frequent fights.
  • More damage makes snowball more impactfull more WOW effect after a one shot.
  • Turrets made of paper forces teams to push like crazy which creates way more action and quick fights
  • Drakes buff and actual baron buff forces fights and breaks the balance of the game.
  • Now many champions are good all the game. the fact that there is an early, mid and late game is less impactfull.
  • You can't customise like in the past with new runes.
  • Counterplay is rare or impossible becaue of permanant oneshots

In the past there was a lot of impressive counterplays. In each game you could see a lot of counterplay in the same game and a lot of ''rekt'' in the game chat. This doesnt happen this often because of the damage. In the past it hapenned a lot because you could lose a lane 1-3 but because you had a mid game champion and because there wasnt this much damage there was always good chances for attentive players to outplay.

The steamroll effect wasn't this strong. You were losing your lane even if your jungle didn't come you always had options unless you fed intentionnaly. You could wait for your champion power spike and win the lane. However nowadays with the amount of damage and snowball you can't.

This game has became too fast paced to be Player friendly.

However it has became video on demand entertainment friendly.

Riot has been losing players in the west. Gaining players in the east. However it is losing more players than gaining new ones.

That is the reason why the match making sucks.

Riot knows players don't like to wait to queue.

There aren't enough players anymore to find players with approximatively the same level in the west.

  1. Games right now are on average 39 seconds longer than Season 2 Games.
  2. You have rose colored glasses if you believe team fighting lasted minutes. When someone was ahead, they 1v5'd. Tanks could exist a little longer, but we had items like a buffed BOTRK and Deathfire Grasp which dramatically shortened tank lifespan.
  3. Turrets last now longer than Ever. The difference is, they don't have Laser attacks, and damage starts off less. (Udyr used to be able to take a turret without minions present!)
  4. Early game champs DON'T Feel godly atm? have we met Lee Sin? Jarvan? Udyr? Toxic Early game damage ratios....

What HAS changed: Players have gotten mechanically better. Players are more fed up with lack of LP progression/rewards for playing well. Players are more toxic and apt to quit as a result. Riot has 6-8 champs they refuse to adjust, who in hindsight compel them to buff the potential of other champs to compensate. More Gold available.

You can't deny that teamfights were longer and that there was less damage JUST look at this :

And if you really played before season 5 you would know that the drake only gave 100 gold and the baron didnt buffed minions...

Team fights only lasted longer because adcs bought Randuin's and other items that were not damage items.... They were of the mindset then, that adaptive builds with a "little of this" and a "little of that" were better on average.

However, as they played the game, and Game theory took over, everyone became "Hawks" as the "Dove strategy" was taken advantage of by people who broke out as early Hawks. They began to realize that maximizing one attribute was more beneficial vs people with more balanced builds. Once the "Balanced build" strategists realized this, they began maximizing damage as well.

The meta changed from building Randuin's to counter lane standards, to building yet more AD and trying to be the first to hit.

But almost none of this was Riot's fault. This is human NATURE. Maximizing decisions is something we do on a daily basis. Warlord's Bloodlust and Guardian Angel changes pushed the meta a little towards hawkish play, but they didn't make the ultimate decision. Players did.

P.S. I've been through 6 incarnations of Drakes, and 5 incarnations of Baron. Wriggles Feral Flame No Support items I used to be the Season 2 Udyr who could solo a turret without minions. I was also the Udyr who could 1v5 a team with full dps build in Season 2-3, because they were playing like Doves, and I was a Hawk.

Are you crazy ? old players weren't bad as fuck my irl friend which stopped lol played adc since beta he never built a fucking randuin WTF are you talking about hahahaha. MAN IF YOU DIDNT PLAYED DURING THOSE TIMES you preferably don't say stupid things. Abilities just made less damage ! And armor and mr stats were stronger.

Players are much better now than they were then. Remember when the Insec was considered an amazing play? Silver players can consistently do it these days. Its very clear in pro play as well. Try watching some LCS/Worlds games from Season 4 or earlier.

I'm sorry for your Rose Colored Glasses. Go back and watch some Tournament play in Season 1-4. Adcs did indeed build some tank items. If you didn't, you generally capped out at Gold tier at best.

Old players were still experimenting builds rather than following a meta.

Yes they were.

Honestly OP, the matchmaking phenomenon is becoming common in almost every game. The truth is that most games have some kind of professional scene, and players watch and emulate what people who put a lot of time and effort into the game do. You can see this even in silver elo where Akali’s and Yasuo’s are making super calculated burst dives under turret and then throwing their leads away. The truth is that a lot of games are getting really hard as people put in a lot of time and effort. Gone are the days where people just boot into an mw2 lobby, choose a gun and get playing. These days it’s all about “meta” strategies and “carrying”. Cognitive Biases are wrecking people left right and center. I’d know, I fell into it a couple times in multiple games I’ve played. These days, you have people who get fed in lane almost every game, they lose the match and then they start flaming without realizing that inconsistency is ruining them. Just remember OP, play the long game. 50.1% win rate is still enough to climb enough time. You just gotta iron out your gameplay and the rest will come. Games are really difficult these days.

I'm cautious to agree with this 100%...... because I know firsthand that some of those Yasuos and Akalis who pull off and emulate skillful plays are actually smurfs, not just players emulating them.

I know this, because I smurf, and I have people as friends who also smurf. Those "inconsistencies" often are their way of throwing on purpose to synthesize a normal win rate for an elo, without sacrificing their "resume." That way, they don't have to pretend as much to avoid account inspections and possible bans.

Who would ever look at a 16/8 Graves and realize without digging, that the 8 deaths were all pre 10 minutes before the Graves turned around and began 1v5ing against the very people he int fed level 1 by chasing under a mid turret, and then invading 4-5 more times? I have a friend who does this. When he's trying to win, he's 11/0 by 10 minutes.

Interesting. I think one of the issues with smurfing, is that the Smurf is guaranteed to be fed. If his laner / opponent doesn’t give them kills, someone will. Thats why smurfing is so prolific in lower elos. Once someone gets going, the enemy team will just shovel due to lack of wards and strategy. Thanks for your response. I assumed smurfs would climb out, not want to stay in a elo / mmr division.

Just skimmed the post, but I agree with everything my eyes landed on. The biggest issue in my mind is that push towards speed and offense. They're so obsessed with pumping out games one after the other and giving LCS spectators a bunch of stuff to ooh and ahh at that they've lost sight of the strategic elements that used to make League fun.

The game doesn't lost its "magic". I love this game like I love it from the beginning. It's actually the best game I've ever played.

The only thing that sucks is matchmaking this season.

The rest is perfect. Damage isn't such a problem anymore since they fixed it and still fixing it.

It's like they're trying to make SR fast-paced like Dominion/Ascension, but without the fast + ambient gold gain among both teams. This basically just leads to one side stomping the other or a single mis-step costing you everything before even the 20 minute mark.

The reason League lost its "magic" is due to MOBAs falling out of flavor and fortnite sucking players everywhere due to it becoming the "next hot and new thing"

LoL props up almost the entire esports industry so a bubble has formed. For example, Echo Fox could not exist in its present form without LoL. Not related to Ops topic but just saying

I agree with you 100%. Some people might disagree by arguing:

“But turrets last longer than ever”: Well, but once turrets are “touched”, they fall much quicker because of The Rift Herald, the Demolish rune, Mountain Dragon, Baron Buff, and Ap ratio applied on auto-attacks.

“But Leesin, Jarvan, Udyr are still strong early game...” Well yes, except Jarvan doesn’t get weeker late game, and Udyr even scales. Vayne, as long as she finishes item 3153 item 3124 , which is around midgame, she’s already reached lategame. That’s why early game, midgame and late game are meaningless now.

“But games were even shorter in season 2, and DGF melt down tanks in season 3”. What about the whole season 4 and season 5 up until 5.22 when the game was very balance, and tankers, bruisers, Ap bruisers, mages, Ap and Ad burst, adc co-existed in harmony? Why do you use season 2 and season 3 as examples of the game unbalances before season 6?

Do you understand why turrets are paper now? Because when they weren't you could never end the game lmao. Go back to Season 4 and you tell me how you are supposed to end the game against Galio Sivir.
